- Lauren Pierce, double bass ( / laurenpiercebass )
Kate Jones, double bass (www.katethebass...)
The Passacaglia was originally written for violin and viola by Johann Halvorsen and is based on a theme by George Frideric Handel from his Harpsichord Suite in G minor.
This piece is commonly performed on violin and cello, as well as violin and bass. We hope you enjoy our version for two basses!

👏👏👏
It's so nice to see female bass players especially when they are playing an amazing piece such as this
Riley Furey Who cares what gender they are

That was amazing, I play viola and those are shifting and tone goals right there. I thought it was hard on viola and violin but I can't even imagine how hard it was on bass, again amazing!
+billbobfreddert Thanks so much!
Oh my... my favorite duet on two basses
+Devin Smith Thank you! :)
my jaw just dropped to the core of the earth... wow that was amazing. I'm a violinist switching to viola and I'm playing this with my friend :)
this is amazing, it blows my mind you guys are so good and to play a violin part on a bass is simply amazing, I can barely play this on the violin and you seem to do it with ease, very nice job
oh My Goodness, how is ths even possible!! Heartiest congrats!
Se ganaron mis respetos, tocar esta obra con esos instrumentos yo lo creía imposible, pero me di cuenta que estaba equivocada...
IM LITERALLY QUAKING THIS IS SO AMAZING WISH I WAS THIS GOODDD
Wonderful two girls rocking the double bass. Love it!
THIS PIECE IS ALREADY SO DIFFICULT ON VIOLIN AND VIOLA, YET WHEN IT:S DONE ON BASSES IT LOOKS TWICE AS HARD. I MEAN, SHE PLAYS A COUPLE HIGH NOTES OFF OF THE FIGERBOARD
wish I had these kind of thumb position skills on my cello. This is one of my favorite pieces. Sounds amazing.
Celista Money Thank you!!
It makes me want to play the Double Bass with the bow more than ever, after watching You Ladies.♫♪♫ Encouragement.!!! Thanks, from a Jazz bass player.
This amazing and wonderful. I'm so happy this exists. I'm a violinist and have done this myself. Much love.
Unbelievable Lauren and Kate! This blew me away!!
Suzi Stern Thank you Suzi!
bassists are excellent on playing other instruments’ repertoire on their basses because they love to show off how talented they are (the same thing you play on a violin or a cello is like a hundred times harder on bass, I’m not even kidding, cellist here)
Beauty, virtuosity, sensitivity. Irresistible.
The microphones can't handle the excellence!! Fantastic work!
***** Thank you!
wow! I've heard pieces like "Schuberts death and the maiden" for 4 cellos and it sounds horrendous! This, on the other hand, sounds in tune and magnificent. great job!
words cannot even begin to describe how beautiful this is, especially because I am struggling on this piece with cello; and you manage to pull it off with double bass... amazing job.
+Ryan Saadat Thank you so much! Can't wait to hear it on cello :)
I had told two violin teachers who were trying to learn this about your video, and they were very impressed! Very good job
Hannah FitzGerald Aw thank you!
That's some world class thumb position there... And the performance was really unique! Amazing!
This is amazing! You both are awesome!!
Rowan Puig Davis Thank you so much!
Bravo!!! I don´t have words to say how amazing was this performance, congratulation for both of you girls!
this is my favourite video Lauren. I wish I could be so dedicated to learning and playing as you clearly are. thank you for inspiring me and surely many other bassists
You're amazing. Thank you so much for your special performance. 🌸💜
This was incredible! So refreshing to see people still attempting new things with music!
As a novice on this instrument, nice to see and hear the difference between the French and German bow techniques. Awesome. Thanks
Fantastic, amazing techniques! you two are awesome! Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed it very much!
Thank you love! xx
Really well done. I enjoyed this immensely. A real pleasure to listen to this performance!

You guys ROCK!
This is badass!!
Such incredible playing, congratulations to both of you!
+Jonathan Ingram Thank you! :)
Terrific!
It rocked my morning!
So Beautiful 💕💕
This is a dazzling performance. I am a beginner bassist and I would like to know how one of you chose to play with a French bow, and the other a German bow. I guess the French bow seems more natural, as I have never seen a violinist play with a German bow, but I practice with a German bow, since that is what came with my student bass.
Hillel Rovner Hi Hillel, thank you! The style of bow you end up using isn't always your choice, at least in the beginning. My teacher started me on French bow from the beginning, and I believe Kate was taught with a German bow. I know Kate has experimented with the French bow, but ultimately feels more comfortable with German.
I don't think one is better or more natural than the other - it seems like some people just work better with German bows and some work better with French. I've known a few people who have made the switch to a different style much later in their career.
I hope that answers your question. If I can answer any others don't hesitate to ask :)
That was incredible!
Hi,
sounds beautiful in every aspect. What microphone setup do you use
Did you tune your instruments in any different way to achieve a higher pitch? By the way, love this :)
No basses can go that high too 😊
Most solo bass playing is in “solo tuning” which is a whole step higher than the regular “orchestra tuning.” Some players or pieces may call for “high solo tuning” which is a fourth higher than orchestral tuning. I don’t know what this piece is played in but my first guess would be normal solo tuning.
@@matthewv789 Wow I can’t believe I’m seeing this 2 years late but thank you so much for this response!! My friend and I performed this piece on two basses and it was challenging yet rewarding to accomplish :) Happy holidays!! 🎄❤️
@@bassplayermaster11 Thank you so much!
@@marisabalades9820 Happy holidays to you too! Glad you got to perform it!

THAT WAS AWESOME!!!
Payton Dziekan Aw thank you! :)
This was bad arse!! Keep it up!!👍👍
Wonderful job! Do you guys have the sheet music available? I assume you made this arrangement?
Thank you! I read straight from the violin part and I believe Kate used the bass part adapted by Frank Proto, but I have been working on an edition with my bowings and fingerings. :)
@@LaurenPierceBass Will your edition be available anytime soon? I love this piece and I have looked at the violin part, but it is so hard on bass! I'd love to see your fingerings to see how you make this impossible piece sound so amazing :)
excellent ...

Can you help? I have a 5 year old (41.5" tall) who wants to study double bass. I believe I have a good teacher lined up, but he doesn't have experience with kids younger than 10. I have rented a 4/4 cello converted to a bass from Ifshin Violins in CA. However, even this looks big compared to my son. I really want to talk with someone who has experience with very young bass students who have gone on to do great things. Any referrals? What size instrument do kids this size start on?
I don't know if the cello is a good idea for the future. The form of a contrabass is not that of a cello. Most luthiers and bass makers will not make a bass that small. I think that a 3/4 or even half cello converted may help to start him off. There are not many bass-playing children. You may be able to consult with an instructor once you find one, but in the mean time, find some nice converted cellos and buy a simple method book. You may have to read it to him and help him. My favorite method book is Essential Elements 2000. Please, before purchasing a book, consult an instructor. I hope your son becomes a star at the contrabass and good luck in your hunt for an instructor
You may also have to stay in the lesson with your son to put what the instructor is saying into "5-year-old terms"
We purchased a 1/2 sized bass from amazon. You can also purchase a bridge less electric bass in half size.
My 5 year old just started the bass. She's on a 1/32 bass. There are a few places that make the small ones. 1/32, 1/20, 1/16th. The Bass Church in Seattle is one that I know of. They do rentals and will ship if I remember correctly.
jaylaugh, my daughter began playing the double bass at the age of 7 on a rented 1/10 instrument. I don't recall how tall she was then. The next size was 1/4 which she used between 9 and 12, also a rental instrument. She is now 13 and I bought her a beautyful 3/4 instrument. As it is built in french style with relatively narrow shoulders it looks actually smaller than other 3/4 instruments with 104 cm string length.
Regardless of the instrument I think it is a very good idea to start off early. Get a small bass for your son and not a converted Cello, he wants to play bass after all. That may play a role when it comes to motivation for practising.
I play cello and I'm thinking about learning bass. Should I?
yes.
Lady Hekate YES
I'm a bass player myself. It depends on what you want out of it. If your looking for a hobby then I say yes absolutely go for it, however if you're doing it as a career choice then I think it would be wise to pick up viola
Absolutely! I started on cello at 10 and added bass at 16. 36 years later I still play both and love them equally. A plus; my left hand strength and power and control greatly increased as a result of adding bass.
*asks biased bassists*
Hey but violins pretty awesome
-biased violinist
молодцы очень красиво и живо!!!
This is beautiful! Simply amazing! How were you able to do this? I didn't think it would sound right on a double bass, but this is awesome! My brother plays the bass and I hope he can be this good. If only he would practice more lol. I, myself being a violinist have tried this piece. It takes great dedication and time to learn this piece. Time I don't have due to school and other activities. You would happen to have any tips that I could pass to by brother in order to get better would you? Again, Bravo!
The number one tip I can give your brother is this: practice! Seriously. You can't get better if you don't put the time in. After that, listen to music regularly, go to concerts, and seek out music you wouldn't listen to normally. Next, listen to your teacher - they are there to help you improve. Finally, just keep playing and have fun :)
Best of luck to both of you. If your brother ever has any questions or needs help with bass, tell him he can email me anytime: laurenpiercebass@gmail.com
Love this.
But WHY so many mic combos and stands in camera shots?
Fooken amazin I'm in love with you both!
