Something I should have stressed more in the video is that Saddle fit as about the most personal part on the bike, so what works for me doesn't necessarily work for the next person. But I really wanted to give my support to a smaller brand for once... easy to think that it's only the Fiziks, Selle Italias, Specialized that's the options out there.
Thanks again for watching and if you have any question let me know.
Your thumbnail and intro game is already at 11 with this one. I had a good laugh. Good job!
Jarek very kind of you to notice... all the effort went into that 😬
i love your shows, man. excellent humour, production and info !!
keep 'em comin', boyo !
I have to admit, your videos are the coolest to watch on my UA-cam rotation list. I always tune in to see what type of creative idea you’ve managed come up with. Cheers Mate.
🙏
That lake and bridge shot are amazing. Top quality.
I heard about Berk from this video and after testing a few other saddles I gave the Lupina a try. It's been perfect for me. Thanks for putting out the content and spreading the good word on Berk!
Haha love your sense of humor. Great shots as well
Cheers mate! 🙏
wow, what scenery. Great video
Great intro. You had be balling... Great production work as always.
🙏
I just came here to tell you that this vid is frequently on my UA-cam "home page" and every time I see the thumbnail I get a little chuckle. You look like some mad wizard conjuring up a saddle. Love it! Love your vids.. and yeah, I'm a subscriber. :)
Haha, cheer man!
Stoked if I can ring a smile to people, makes it all worth it! 😊
absolutely awesome intro, and I loved the thumbnail. a+ vid
Nicholai thanks mate! 🙏
Intro, outro, drone views, landscapes... Wow, as usual. And a very informative and honnest point of view concerning this beautiful and light saddle. I will have a closer look at her as I had a crash and need to replace mine (cannot stand with a scratched saddle, hurts my eyes !). Peace.
only for the intro.... superlike!! and the saddle looks good! My favorite so far is the Tune, but this is more beatiful
OK, I did it. In the great grey color that matches my bike sooooooooooo nicely. It looks and feels so good. I think I’m going to carry it around with me first for a couple of days before putting it on my bike. Sleep with it :-)
great landscape!
really enjoyed your video - just ordered one to replace my creaking Astute saddle
You Rock Dear sir!
Great dramatic intro! :D
That intro! Lol 😂 Great videos and even if I’m not a weenie I still appreciate the content. Jealous cause my rides don’t give me the view @ 4:40
About the intro: 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Sick bridge!
Next level intro, awesome job! Never heard of Berk, but that's a pretty sleek saddle design
Two Wheel Cruise cheers mate!
Quite a few of these smaller boutique brands around... easy to just go for the big ones, but there’s definitely some gems out there.
I bought a carbon saddle with no padding (I think it's 96g). I agree on the saddle/chamois connection, it is much more about shape of the saddle.
haha excellent, thought I was watching Suspiria at first!!
eminusx mission accomplished 😊
haha i like your little video pointing at the subscribe button ending with a bow.
Thanks mate! Fun little experiment I might work on more in the future!
Wow, nice .
Köpt en nu också, 150mm ovala rails läderklädd. Tack för tipset ;)
axlpxl 👌
Ha! I LOLed at the intro. The closest thing we will get to GOT this year :)
Then I had to come back and comment on that stunning scenery. Just amaaaazing. So, you have the frame bag and talked about bike packing. When are you going to take us on a multi-day trip with your and your bike into those mountains some more? Have you done some multi-day trips in Japan? Oh, yeah, what's your attitude towards frame protection for the frame bag? Thanks for the awesome vid.
Cheers mate!
Due to work... (and youtube to be honest) I have not had the time to go bike packing even once this year :-(
Hopefully I'll can squeeze something on in the near future... but will most likely be an single over-nighter. God damn work getting in the way!
Regarding frame protection I use clear frame protection tape at all the attachment points on the frame. (Something like helicopter tape). Better to be safe than sorry as they say.
Hey men! Thats pretty cool dyi video you´ve made.. you should sell it to Berk! They have to give you thousands of bucks ;-)
Beauti saddle. Butt you're right it has to fit. Very personal item.
nice place to ride...
You 素晴らしい映像作家だ。Rides of Japanは今一番面白い動画です。荒川水系河川、秩父山地がいいですね。Bike組み立て技術知識、研究もしっかりしている。知的に面白い。Peace sir.
ありがとうございました😊
Thanks for this recommendation. Bought it and love it (after initial nervousness, so light). One question though, how do you protect against rain? Water projections are directly aligned with saddle hole. Rode only shortly under rain once and shorts were wet immediately. Do you always carry ass-saver in case? Thks. P
Pierre Willems I use an ass saver if there’s a chance of rain, if it raining from the start, I stay at home ;)
So this is the elusive 'one'? Looks kinda like the offspring between a Specialized Romin Pro and a Fizik Arione. Super light! Interested to see how you get on with it over time.
Did you try the Bontrager Montrose Pro?
Steve Rodgers will be another episode if I ever change again ;)
Never tried it.... but it’s been on my list actually. Opted to got with the Berk as I had an opportunity to try it before buying.
What an exquisitely overdramatised video, btw idk if you put it on off camera but it seems that you did not use some carbon coumpound i would highly recoomed using that so you can reduce the torque need to tighten the saddle, I had specialized carbon saddles that had a snapped rail just trying to stop that from happening to dat berk
RG's Shed good catch!
But In the case of this old enve clamp, carbon compound does not affect how much you need to torque the single bolt... Instead you use actually use grease on the sliding blocks.
It’s a very good point you brought up though!
The saddle is rated to 5nm, but It’s set into account with yoke-type (?) clamps... other clamps like this one you should be able to torque down to the recommended seatpost rating.
Rides of Japan i see, enve always make some interesting stuff.
looks great. I'm looking for similar weight/cost level of saddle for my lightweight new build now. as you say, having the ability to test try is the biggest factor. have you done more longish rides since? how does it feel? and, last but most important, do you think I could borrow it for one big ride to check if it'll fit me? I got a bare carbon one but it's been too hard on me after 70-80km so want to go with just light padding next and see what's it like....
Luka B sorry dude not letting this one out of my sight 😎
Have had two long rides and one medium this far and it’s up there with the best I’ve tried.
no probs I get it. hope I can get one of the big brands to test out, as there are plenty of them in the shops around town. I'm simply not gonna dish out that amount of money before I'm sure it will work for me. enjoy your lupina!
Hi! Great video and great feedback. Right now I own a Fizik Arione R1 Evo with 140mm width. I feel the mid channel is very narrow, hence sometimes is uncomfortable. Do you think the Lupina's shape and canal will make it feel comfortable. I'm thinking od the 140mm Lupina. also considering Gelu or Alpitude saddles. Any advice or comments?
Thanks for your videos.
Cheers mate!
Unfortunately it's impossible for me to give any kind of reliable recommendations when it comes to saddles and how they will "feel" I'm afraid... I'm not a bike fitter either so have no experience of fitting other people than myself.
Best thing is always to try it out for yourself, I realize it's hard especially with Berk.
On the other hand, it shouldn't be that hard to sell a saddle of this caliber if it doesn't fit.
Sorry I can be of more help.
Hi thanks for the reveiw... Looking at this saddle. in your opinion is the Carbon (which I prefer) any less comfortable than padded?
I enjoy seeing you go crazy about all the weight thingybits, but I was wandering just exactly how much does your bike weigh then at the moment?
Last check In full gravel mode, 7.62kg (see my last Open build video)
In road mode, stay tuned ;)
I saw the video. That's actually how I found you. I'm going to try and build a Ridley X-trail Gravel Bike myself and the Open build video is really helpful. I even bought Panaracer Gravel King tires. Which are very hard to find here in Holland. Lucky enough I bumped in to them when I was in Madrid last week. And of course I ordered the Wakos Brake protector. So thanks for inspiring me. @@ridesofjapan
👌
Okay okay okay...you got me, i ordered it. Looking forward trying it out. Is it really only 5nm to tighten the saddle? i never had a saddle with carbon rails before
Digi20 5nm is for a yoke-type Clamp (is yoke what you call it?)
I have my enve 1-bolt Clamp that pinch the rails from the top and bottom on the same spot at 8nm
@@ridesofjapan i have the system where you tighten two bolts from below and an upper and lower clamp hold the saddle (rose rc 170 flex) - i am pretty sure this will not stay in position at 5nm even with carbon paste. is there a manual with the saddle? maybe i should mail berk in advance
Digi20 these type of clamps have that 5nm limit images.app.goo.gl/JKnbred4wsaRpTF68
When the above and below clamp different areas of the rail.
If your seatpost clamp the rail at the same spot from above and below you should be okay going higher.. within reason of course
@@ridesofjapan ah, thank you, looks reasonable only using 5nm with that style. i have the "classic" 2 bolt system: www.rosebikes.de/images/xJ9115cR3dw-jMnCppAt_12OsXQzbYgm6rfXUlXztyE/resize:fit:1800:1200:1/gravity:no/background:FFFFFF/bG9jYWw6Ly8vcHJvZHVjdC8yMTQzODIyXzEucG5n.jpeg
my saddle arrived today and i tightened it with 5nm until i get an official response from berk or my shop. but hell! i ondly did a quick ride round the block and that thing is more comfortable than anything i tried till today. looking forward for a longer ride.
Haha, vilken Hollywood produktion! Sadeln liknar min Selle San Marco Aspide Carbon Superleggera jävligt mycket.
how would you compare that with Specialized Phenom if you have any experience? Been riding Phenom Expert (older version) in 143mm but really looking into Berk Lupina!
Jernej Markovc sorry mate, have no experience with that saddle.
Wow! This saddle is more expensive then my bike.
What they need to make is one that has a big enough hole in the important parts that I can just tuck my almonds in as no pad does them justice.
Strange question, but have you had any issues with the saddle moving or rocking? I have a Lupina on a single-bolt Canyon s27 seatpost, and it's been causing me a bit of grief. The maximum torque for the seatpost clamp is 15Nm, but carbon being carbon, I started out tightening it up to 12. On my first ride, I hit a bump at speed, causing the nose of the saddle to shoot up and almost ... ahem. I tried tightening to 13. Same issue. Now I'm at 14, and I honestly can't tell if the saddle is moving ever so slightly, or if it's just flex. I have some carbon paste in the clamp mounts, but it doesn't seem to be helping. I'm reluctant to go to 15 for fear of hearing that dreaded *snap*. I had a look online, and it seems a few other people with Lupinas on single-bolt clamps have experienced this issue, so I wondered if you've had any problems? Sorry for the rambling post ...
Justin Norrie I’ve not had that issue. I have my seatpost clamp set to recommended 9Nm. Sounds more like a seatpost issue rather than saddle issue though? Or did I misunderstand?
The lupina definitely flexes in the middle of the saddle, but it would not change the angle so to speak.
I don’t know how that canyon post works but can you somehow put some carbon paste in/around the post/clamp interface that though help a bit I would guess.
@@ridesofjapan Right. Like you, I assumed it was a seatpost issue. That makes the most sense. So I removed and cleaned the clamp mounts, regreased them, tightened everything back up, but I still had that movement. That's when I noticed on a WW forum that other people have this issue with Lupina saddles, and it seems it *might* be related to tiny differences in the size of the rails ... ? Anyway, I love how the saddle feels. It's brilliant. I just want to be sure it won't suddenly shift position on me when I'm 80km from home! PS nice video.
Justin Norrie ah, I see think I need to read up on that...
Is it one of the clamps that clamp from the side and not above/below?
I imagine if that the case it could be the reason while you feel movement of the diameter is off 🤔
I hade the Ritchey 1-bolt seatpost a few years back and it clamped from the side... wasn’t a big fan of that to be honest, it was light though :)
Rides of Japan That’s the one - it’s a single-bolt side clamp, and it’s a crap design.
Manage to test the fabric ALM ultimate before and if yes, how does it compare to it besides the weight obviously lighter than the ALM. Thx
The biggest difference is that it's a bit wider, and it doesn't have a cut out. I got along with the ALM pretty well, I prefer to have that cut-out though.
In the end the ALM cracked in the nose under my massive 63kg of mass... got it warrantied but decided to move on to the next saddle.
thanks. currently on astute skylite vt and been thinking about the alm. not that the astute is bad, it's really great but just wanted to try out something else and see. 63kg really isnt massive and i know you're just being sarcastic. i'm 65kg :)
HJ Shoon hehe, Yeah I’m pretty sure it was a one-off saddle that slipped through the quality control. I think The ALM ultimate is one of the most beautiful saddle on the market to be honest.
Cool saddle, but wow that's narrow!
They make a 150mm version as well
konbanwa, Have you considered a Berk Dila?
I've been on S-Works Power for awhile, and now interested in Berk Dila.
Also what do you think of durability of Berk saddle?
hh14hh14hh14hh14 I’ve tried quite a few short and wide saddles, including the sworks power, after a lot of trials that shape didn’t works as good as a narrower saddle for me.
So no, never considered the Dila.
The durability has Been good this far, is survive a massive crash as well so can’t complain.
I feel like it sagged a tiny bit in the middle, it actually made more comfortable, but might be something to take into account if you are a heavier rider.
Thanks! that’s very helpful. I just remember you had a bad crush and your Berk saddle survived.
Now that's an intro.
You need to try the dila ;)
Niceee saddle!!. Now sell me your shimano saddle. :p
Kari Kepala Gajah haha, sorry already sold unfortunately.
That looks just like the bontrager XXX saddle.
DallasLopez1 I agree, the bontrager xxx looks just like the Berk lupina 😬
@@ridesofjapan Curious what your sitbone width is... I'm looking into this saddle as well.
DallasLopez1 I actually don’t know, the only time I checked is at the prologo booth at a trade show... and they only matched me to a saddle (Nago evo) that is 134. The lupina is 132.
Love your channel by the way. Did you still ride this saddle? That’s the true test of how comfortable it is.....
Still using it and bought two more since :)
Cheers!
It's looking touring video
Have you compared it to a Specialized Toupe by any chance? Looks similar
Rixter no, I haven’t compared them directly unfortunately. Did try the toupe for a couple of rides a few years ago, I remember I liked it better than the romin... but can’t really comment of how it would compare to the Berk today.
Rides of Japan no worries. Enjoy the saddle and your nice new ride
How would you rate the saddle after 3 years? :)
Best saddle I’ve had, never even thought about switching to something else. Bought 2 more since.
But again, just because it fits me doesn’t mean it will fit you.
Thank you. :)
Sure it’s a fine saddle, but WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR BEARD?
jimnyfuchs it’s summer now ;)
Sworks Power
Yeah this thing gets easily snapped, though.
My Bontrager XXX saddle weighs 69g.. lifetime warranty.. that's right lifetime.
No, it is not, breaks so easily
Totally overpriced... Just a sheet of carbon fiber mat... Berk's designs are not unique.. He did not do extensive anatomical research or advanced computer aided design to justify the expense. They are copies and tweaks of shapes that already exist. Remember, no matter if the saddle is 20$ or 300$, it's all about the saddle shape, the padding in your shorts and how well it suits your anatomy... One mans pillar of bliss is another mans ass hachet.
Don't get so overexcited. We know it all too. Nobody pays a full retail price these days anymore. These saddles can be had for close to 1/2 price if you search the internet retail places at the right time.
They should cost half price judging by how frequently they break.
