  • The Celtics announced on Thursday that Kristaps Porzingis would miss 5-6 months after ankle surgery, meaning he'll miss the start of the season. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal and Tom Westerholm react to that before getting into the Celtics draft. Baylor Scheierman and Anton Watson represent a chance for Boston to snag a useful player at the end of the first round and into the second, as well as provide some insurance against a quirky offseason that could cost them key players.

    My reaction to the Porzingis injury: you're the first person I've heard talk about it who can 1) do math and 2) doesn't automatically add a "Porzingis Factor" to it. Heard four different people lay out exactly what you said with the following reaction: it's "well past Christmas," "January at the earliest," "that tells me maybe 8 months," and my favorite, "more than half the season." IT WILL BE FINE.
    I have one tweak/add to the way the C's handled him, because this happened twice. It's for Joe: if the man twists his ankle or some other thing, TAKE HIM OUT OF THE GAME THAT SECOND. There were two times this year he tweaked something, stayed in, and then injured SOMETHING ELSE while compensating. His own worst enemy? Make his assistant coach a spotter.

    • @bmcfonzie
      @bmcfonzie 2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, I was surprised they didn't pull Porzingis out the game immediately upon his getting injured, particularly when they seem to be careful about managing him otherwise. Surely someone on the Celtics bench must have been aware. Call a timeout if you need to, and get him off the court.

      It’s on KP as well. I understand wanting to play through things, but he needs to realize when things aren’t right it’s ok to take a seat on the court until a dead ball especially considering his history.

      @@bmcfonziefor real-there’s definitely been some times in the last 6 months where I’m like “why tf is he still playing”… because Luke kornet or Tillman are farrrr better than the injured shell of porzingis. We have more than enough depth so I never understood why they would waste an extra 5 or 6 possessions when someone is clearly limping and getting blown by every time on defense.
      It’s like mazzulla needs to see an injured player get scored on 2 or 3 times in a row before he decides that having them on the floor is maybe not the best idea.
      I love joe and think he’s an awesome coach but that one thing kinda bugs me lol

    Given no more injuries- this roster wins 58-60 games easy. KP being out is just a good player development opportunity. If KP can’t come back healthy that’s a big problem - otherwise all is very well in Celtic world. 🍀 🏀🍀

      @ErnieBert-eg8kd 2 місяці тому

      If KP has injuries again next year as he did this year it will be a huge problem. He’s making 30 mil a year. The Celtics are stuck with him through the 25-26 season. No one will take him on a trade at that price without giving up 2-3 first round pics. The Celtics knew he was highly injury prone. He needs to be a Bill Walton type sixth man play 15-18 minutes off the bench or he will just be too banged up down the stretch to be effective in winning another chip.

  • @clav93089
    @clav93089 2 місяці тому

    The majority of the Celtics' recent draft picks have only been with the team for about three years. Think back to guys like Carsen Edwards, Tremont Waters, Grant Williams, Aaron Nesmith, Romeo Langford, Yabusele, Semi Ojeleye... Tatum, Brown, and Rob were the only guys drafted in recent years who were with the team for 5+ seasons. My point being, most players they have drafted in recent years have been fillers on cheap rookie-scale contracts who are all traded or let go before they are up for a new contract. That way they can keep the focus on paying their stars. If one of these two or Davison or Walsh turns into a key contributor (like Payton Pritchard who actually did sign an extension) then that's great! But they're likely just looking to add cheap, short-term pieces rather than focus on full long-term development. 23 year-olds with experience are the best fit for that role.

    so this is the tillman insurance? small ball big (big wing size) that shoots well from 3? i guess that's good for mazzula ball. not impressed with the rebounding or rim protection. hopefully he's good enough to be that switching big that tillman played.
    i did like that brad didnt draft a guard. not as impressed with this pick as Baylor. i hoped brad would trade up to pick up flip, klintman or smith (all went before pick 38).
    I gave brad a B for baylor. I give him a C for watson. so I guess overall grade would be C+. will see if my assessment of him changes in summer league. i have a feeling i'll be upgrading the grade of Baylor.

We load managed him like crazy all year and he still got injured. He’s an amazing talent but it’s inevitable at this point and we need to be prepared for it.

    I have concern about the big situation, and don't want to wear Al out during regular season. If X or Luke were to leave, how about Mo Bamba? Not my first choice, but a guy we may be able to afford. Drummond is in that same price range. Tillman is only 25? I thought he might have had grandchildren.

    • @bmcfonzie

      The guys they had under contract last year (Horford, Kornet, Tillman, Queta) are good enough to fill in during Porzingis' absence. That said, not sure if all of them will be back next season. I hope they resign Tillman in particular, because Kornet and Queta don't have the same mobility on defense (they basically fill the same role). Tillman is the guy to fill the Grant Williams role.

    • @danielthompson3928
