Been meaning to do this for a while! A lot of you may have seen the turntables in my room. I'm purely a 'hobbyist' DJ but I do love my mixing and I decided to put this video together just to show those of you interested whats possible when recording a DJ. I use a system called 'Serato' in which time coded vinyl plays digital music on the computer. It's really awesome.
The main thing to do is get your audio bang on. Use decent leads and if your mixer has more than one output then record two audio signals. Watch for clipping and make sure to switch off any settings in your recording device that may enhance or amplify the signal. Generally, the line out in the mixer will be quite powerful or 'hot' so you really don't need to use high levels in your recording device. If using audio in on your camera, make sure it's set to line and again, check the levels. Once ready, ensure that the dj doesn't make volume changes on the output as it'll ruin your levels. Two camera angles is always good and it means that if you want to do a 'perfect mix' then you can cut to a different view to hide any edits you make that remove a sloppy mix or whatever. If you're a typical bedroom dj then your lighting is probably quite low. - Фільми й анімація
imagine how good he would be if he was a full time 3style dj. mind🤯🤯
Ha ha, thanks a lot!
I was thinking the exact same thing!
How to film a professional dj clip...first buy 10k filming gear like cameras, sliders, lenses, editing software, lights 😅
Nice work Hugh. Met ya today in town. Rob
Sweet video! I never actually saw a DJ using reversed line faders 👀
Legend❤
I'm finally showing you guys my DJ-ing! 😀🎧🔊
Oh, you kept your Mixars turntables. From your unboxing video, I thought you were gonna get rid of them. You weren't too happy with the tone arm so what made you keep them?
@@mingusmkubukeli Hey! I kept them because they're good for Serato and I don't play vinyl so much these days. They aren't good TT's for vinyl as the tone-arm sucks bad but for Serato they work great. That said, I might swap 'em out for Technics MK7's when I get some spare cash.
Beautiful video mate! I absolutely loved it and didn't realise you had such skills on the decks. Loved the crabs thrown in!! The slider shots were beautiful. I have to admit I haven't cleaned a vinyl in years so I really should learn from you.
Cheers Beatnik, much appreciate the nice comment. I have a stack of vinyl here (mostly 90's techno and house) but I tend to stick to the Serato. Hope all is well!
What cables u used for conect the camera to mixer ?
So you cut the audio from each scene and splice it.
This is probably the best video I've seen on the subject. Totally enjoyed every second.
Thanks mate, that comment means a lot!
Hey not bad. That slider really makes stuff look nice. I've been firing up my UA-cam channel recently but focusing more on the DJing side of things. It's hard to know what to focus on when you're a film maker and a DJ!
Yeah, good point. I wanted to do a second channel about this stuff and film mixes. It ain't easy to get time though!
awesome
Dude awesome video!! I’d love to see a break down of that work surface, those turntables look so snug its so cool what you’ve done with the space
Thanks. I've actually tidied it up a bit since. If you know a local sawmill you can order the pieces. Or get stuff cnc routed and it'll be deadly accurate.
I know they are just control vinyl but did you really just spray all purpose cleaner on there?! lol how are those cartridges holding up 🤯
Thats a citrus based degreaser. Plus it's wiped away with a cloth.
We should do a video together, do a DJ/Drummer trading 4s, would be cool if we got it down right!
That's be awesome Mark, we'll have to work on some stuff together soon. Let's do that call towards the end of the week!
@@HuFilms cool yeah whenever suits for the call
How to have the best signal on camera same as in my headphones please ?
I'm on djm s5 (real vinyl only) Technics SL-1200mk2
Thank you for the great advice I will Apply it with my Dj sets, greetings!! 👋🏻
why not record the audio in the software and use that audio instead of taking live audio. Didn't understand why you specifically wanted live audio
this was really great. what kind of camera and lightening equipment are you using?
Where have u been this whole time ?? I been looking for videos like this for my content .. thank u.. if u knw more content Channels on how to shoot cinematic DJ set please let me knw ..
Best way is like mixing itself, practice shooting it in different ways. Thanks for the nice comment!
@@HuFilms thank u and no problem 🤩🙏🏽🔥
MAd skills!! I recognise the intro routine..
If you use someone's music and then get like a copyright infringement, can you monetize the videos that you post on your UA-cam channel
What is the auto dolly you use for the camera that go back and forth on a slider?
What is the Tripod with the Dolly Rail on it?
I subscribed for the culture and 2 I know you love it. I think i gotta get my stuff in gear bc I have not recorded any video. Concerned about the copyright strikes. Also I seee Davinci is the peoples champ just above final cut both on osx
How did you record directly from your controller into the video? Please share the needed accessories for the trick
Hola! How do you get clear DJ audio for videos. I want to shoot a DJ set for my friend but I need tips on the audio. Gracias for making this video 🤟🏾🤟🏾🤟🏾🤟🏾
i filmed with my iphone and recorded my mix with obs studio how do i sync both together pls
Can you give a more in depth tutorial of the recording set up? Need something reliable for a gig in a few weeks
great videos amazing dj skills 👍
Hi whats the Name of that Boom Stick gliding the Camera ?
cant belive you didnt mention the equipment! what was the moving device i need one!
Thanks for the tips. What program do you use for post?
Really dope video bro! Can you give a little more detail about the audio setup? I see you used the zoom recorder - does that feed audio directly into the camera or do you need to sync the audio in post?
Thanks! Well done again. Both footage and the mix. Really dope stuff!
Make a video of step by step tutorial of how to setup a dj live stream rig
what is the slide tripod make and model bruv
Omg you're nice with it, I would have love to see you at the Rock n Soul event in NYC all the legendary dj we're there and I think you were missing. I'm going to post them on my other channel and I will tag you in it. You rock Sir. Do you do any tutorial videos?
yo so dope! a great film maker as much as a great dj! fuck yeah
Where are you speakers set up I don’t see them ?
Can you give same advice with 2 phones 😁
bloody hell , I dont think Ill even try to make one after watching the quality of this ! impressive
Man, that comment was awesome to get. the video, is like the djing itself, it takes practice!
This video doesn't even have 2000views thats illegal since it's the best djing video I've seen. I want to start recording proper videos since my first two had horrible audio but I only have my webcam to feed audio in since i have cameras but not the fancy audio equipment. That's how i ended up on this page.
Thanks, that means a lot. Yes, its soul destroying when you put so much work into a video and it doesnt catch the YoyTube algorithm.
@@HuFilms Yeah I can only imagine. It sucks. Your video is so good, far different from all I've seen considering it's also from a pro photographer. I hope it's gets a million views at some point cuz you deserve it. If i see another dj film these angles and gets more views i know there's a high chance they copied it from you.
@@29dj17 thanks a lot man. Honestly, these nice comments from genuine DJ's dedicated to the art, like yourself, make it all worthwhile.
Secret member of the beastie boys by any chance? 😁👍
Dude thank you so much. This video is super informative and will help me immensely!
Thats good to hear, happy mixing!
Excellent video bro very useful, one question, when is the correct moment to changing the cámara ángulo ay the moment of edition? exist a rule for that?
This will come with learning editing. Just spend some time at it, then it'll become easy cutting between angles.
What headphones you using please?
what kind of slider did you use in the making of this video???
I used a Slypod and Rhino slider.
How to Film a dj set:
Get hollywood grade filming equipment first 😅
Hollywood uses 6 year old cameras worth €500? Wow, I didn’t know that.
You deserve many more subs mate. Loved this content.
Cheers, this comment t means a lot. Glad you enjoyed!
Hi mate, I’m looking into video recording my vinyl dj sets at home. Just a couple of things I need to know really.
1 - What sort of camera do I need for recording? I’m just looking basic.
2 - How do I get the best sound quality from the mix? Would I need an output from my mixer, or I’ve got a Scarlet interface actually? Do I need to input the signal to the recording device? I could really do with some clarity on this please. Thanks Andy
It depends on what you’re doing. Short insta reels and stuff, you can get away with anything. But the best option would be to use your sound card. Failing that, a field recorder is always a good idea because they tend to have good preamps for a nice clean sound. You could also record into a camera. Certain cameras have decent inputs and will give an ok sound. Even if they don’t, chances are the sound might be fine for what you need. Again, it depends. If I was doing say, a scratch routine or something, just for show., I’d go straight into the camera.
what camera do you use?
I was curious this wholllle time. How do you sync your mixset with the video??
This is done in the edit. Bring in your video file(s) then align up the audio. Very easy once you know how.
Hi, thanks for posting this! I'm also a hobby DJ. Long story short, I've made about 8 15 minute DJ mix videos using my phone. Problem is that it sounds like it's coming from a tin can, because my audio is just my phone's built in microphone! Anyway, my question is, what device or interface do you recommend to have my music go from my mixer to my phone's USB input?
I've heard the iRig2 is pretty good with direct audio. You'll just have to get some quarter inch jack converters so the cables can connect to your phone. All you've got to do is record and the audio should go directly to your phone.
Name of all your gear?
Great video ! How are you liking the mixars TTs now . Do you still get the rattle , was the issue solved by tightening the screws. Lastly what weight you're using on the M-447s .
They're actually decent for this setup but I definitly wouldn't recommend them for playing real vinyl especially in a club environment. The tone arms do rattle and I didnt bother trying to fix then via the screws as they're really tight screws and are factory set so it may not be a good idea. The 'looseness' of them doesnt affect them skipping. In terms of weight, as its serato and has skip proof technology you dont need that much weight. So I just have the tone arm weight pushed fully in but not reversed like youd have it for vinyl on a technics.
Hugh this is really good stuff. Very impressed! Haven't been on FB in about 5 years but coming back to seeing quality content is a joy. Keep up the good work!
Cheers John, really appreciate the comment, glad you liked it. Hope all is good with you!
Backround Track yesses
Love this!! Thank you for the video if you ever need any new music i'll send you some over I make deep house music!! 🙌
Thanks man. You have great stuff on your channel. I gave you a sub. I used to make deep house and techno but I never got the music out there. Or finished anything!
@@HuFilms No worries man!! And thank you mate I’ve subscribed to you to!! And you should get back into it mate!!
Do you have a shortlist in mind when shooting this??
Not as such. Just one or two good angles.
Thank you dude!
this video was about how to set cameras not showing your dj tricks
My videos are designed to inspire
So you had to do 4 different takes of exactly the same scratching? Subtle difference i guess not noticeable to the eye.
More or less, doesn't need to be exactly the same just cut it in time. I wouldn't do this a lot. More just to show you can do it for a more 'high end' showcase of the dj skills.
I smile when I found you.
Starting the set with al naafiysh, classic, I think I still have the original vinyl.
and then later on New Jersey Deep, nice
What a great video, on top of a great mix. One question... I'm a bedroom dj, nowhere near as good as you. If I wanted to use my phone to record my set to upload to youtube, which is the best mic to use to capture the audio? Would the Rode VideoMic be sufficient? Any advice is appreciated 👍🏼
Want the desk set up
Great video 👌👌
Can I ask where did you get your cap?
Thanks. JD sports I think. Just an air jordan.
Hey man I didn't know you till now, but I love the AV area and you've my respect. I'm a brazilian guy and you're so good in your own way to go. Keep in this man. CONGRATULATIONS
Av area? Not sure what you mean. Audio visual? Thanks bro.
@@HuFilms oh sorry, it's that, Audio Visual, that's a slang right there rss. AV
Interesting!
sweet work on the decks! Combining camera craft, editing and djing = creativity on steroids. Tip of the hat to you!
Thanks a lot Matt, really appreciate the warm motivating comment. Glad you liked it!
You got my thumbs up 👍🏽
Great stuff!
its time
are the turntables fully digital?
I'm not sure what you mean by that. They play records so maybe not...
Yeeeahhhhhh!!!!
Amazing vid! Whats the name of the song playing in the background as you prep/clean your kit before you started recording & mixing
What kinda camera are you using... I’m searching for a camera now to buy.... thinking bout a GoPro
I’m using mirrorless style cameras. A canon eos R and pana s1. GoPros are great too. Lots of pro djs use them for their vids. The main thing is audio snd having it perfectly synced with the video.
@@HuFilms thanks for the response
@@HuFilms great video. mind if i ask what is the best focus setting on the camera for shooting main front angle please ?
You are pretty much like Pri yon Joni because you do both filmnaking and DJing like him!
Nice, you cover some important tips in the video production space! We love what you talk about, don't stop. Anytime you are in Scottsdale hit us up. If you want, DM us @dmakproductions on Instagram and we can chat. We love what you do!
what size was your lens while filming it? also how about coloring info during post in edit production. Great vid.
You killed it with this video. Great job & Thank you.
Luv ur video. Actually, Im triyn to record my scratch via a portable scratch gadget like Numarkpt01scratch with Raiden Fader(2channels fader)
Did u connex the ZoomH6 to ur mixer to record music?
Yeah, though I used in cam audio from another output in the mixer. But a recorder like that will work great.
Hi, how do you post videos without getting a copyright claim? I always get hit with the littlest sound.
Hello Hugh,
I have a question: I am editing a DJ set from a 2h session. I need only a part of it, maybe 10 minutes. What would be a good point to start the video? A quiter part of the set? Or a blast? Thank you :)
Cool vid dude. What camera do ya suggest/use? Thanks
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I absolutely loved this video. It's brilliant. Some great creative ideas for how to shot a mix. Thanks so much for putting it together!
Thanks a lot, really appreciate it!
Dude you didnt even talk about how to set everything up to actually record.
👍🏾
Great video! How did you align the audio with the multiple camera shots?
Hey Hugh, hi from Melbourne, Australia! Great vid. Also, I have a quick question-what is the computer doing off to the side? Cheers
Thanks a lot! The imac is hooked up to the decks and I'm playing .wav files on the imac via serato vinyl. I used to have a laptop but as thr decks stay here I just use my faster iMac. Hope this helps.
Gained a new subscriber 🙌
What slider are you using ?
Thanks a lot. I used a Rhino slider (first version) and a Moza Slypod.
Awesome video thank you 🙏🏻
Love this!! When is your Canadian Debut? I'm your new biggest fan ❤
Ha ha, thanks a lot! Glad you liked it.
you're so talented!
You are actually very nice and precise with your skills! I say that because your opening dialogue stated that you were a videographer by trade. So I wrongly assumed that the DJ gear was just something you maybe played with to kill time. Then, I noticed you had some serious gear, which enticed me to continue watching your video. Once you started scratching and juggling, I said, "Nah, this guy is pro-level with his!" I don't know why I under-estimated you, because I'm a videographer & graphic designer by trade as well as a DJ.
So with that said, I appreciate your video and the time you spent creating the content. I have been adding DJ sets to my channel since the pandemic began. I use 2 to 3 camera angles, but the biggest issue I have is putting in all the work and editing not knowing if it will be flagged for copyrights. Just the same, appreciate your content! Cheers!
Hey, thanks a lot. I enjoyed reading this comment and getting your feedback, sorry for the late reply, hope u see this. Yeah, I've been into mixing for years but only more recently did I start to scratch and juggle. I always thought I was too old but then I saw a video of Jazzy Jeff at his 50th birthday and I said, OK I gotta learn this! I gave up alcohol a few years ago and when I did that, I found my skills improve as I wasn't having a beer or a few when mixing. Lately, I haven't been doing so much but I know that a few good sessions will get my skills on point. The copyright thing really is a total pain and ruined my live sets which I wanted to do on Facebook. Even now, it's kinda killed my motivation to do mixes. I really hope that they come to some sort of solution for it. No one is ripping tracks from mixes anymore. Anyone into the music will just buy it. I must have a look at your stuff, send on a link to a video.
Love this video!
Couple of questions
1) Is there a gear list?
2)How would you recommend setting up lighting?
3) what lights are you using?
Thanks. Watch this space, I'll do another more in-depth on same topic.
Nice. Best video on this topic. Took long to find.
NIce, You make me wanna get my slipod back. Is that the slipod or slipod E?
Thanks Alec. Yeah, I got the two different Sly-Pods. It can be a great tool for certain things!
@@HuFilms Cool. Thinking of getting the slipod E, is it better or different? Did you make a video comparing both?
Awesome video man! Really enjoyed that and very well put together. Class music selection and dropping some Terrence Parker 👏😎
Cheers man, TP is the business. One of my favourite dj's to listen to. Very inspiring to learn from also.
