    Thanks! It's one of the most informative videos regarding troubleshooting the Xsara and Xsara Picasso air con. I'm having similar problem on a Polish registered Citroen Xsara Picasso (1.8 16V from 2002). The air con fan doesn't kick when turning ac on thus the compressor clutch is no more engaging. I will try to follow your tutorial.

      is the job same for Citroen c5 2005 1.6hdi? I have same problem with AC, when i turn it on Cooling fan not starting to spin and compresor shuting down.

    Nice video well explained. Although I'll leave a tip.
    Those metal clips on the plug never need to be removed.
    Press it IN and remove the plug as usual.
    General rule of thumb in most cars if it's difficult, there's a strong possibility, it's not being done right... Hope it help. :-)

    Hi,
    Had a problem with 2001 1.6 8v petrol Picasso with Aircon. The engine Stop High Temp warning came on momentarily followed by the engine cooling fan on high speed and continued to do so every 20 seconds when stood in traffic.
    Top fan resistor was u/s ,have renewed both for £20 (new parts ex e bay)
    Only difference on Picasso is that front bumper has to come off for access
    (check with aircon fitted car is to switch on with engine running,the engine cooling fan should be running on slow speed)

      the cars thermostat will open and close at a specific temperature, its the temperature the engine has been designed to run at. From memory the Xsaras stat opens at about 75-80 degrees and the safety circuit cuts in when the coolant reaches too high a temperature.
      I would check your thermostat is in good condition, and you have fresh coolant in the system, then i would check the resistors in the circuit to make sure the system is fully functional. If the resistors are broken or the temperature sensor is faulty then you will get odd situations like the fan not cutting in until the engine is over temperature and they will be blowing at max speed.
      A good fully functional coolant system shouldnt overheat up hill.
      I dont know much about your specific issue but I hope this helps!

    Hi, I have the same csr model and my problem is that; whenever the AC is turned on, the fan stops working after a while and then overheating warning. But when the AC is off the fan works normal. What do you think might be the fault ? Thanks

    • @phipck
      @phipck  10 років тому

      I might be wrong but it sounds like your fan motor may be failing. The reason I say this is because in normal operation the fan comes on briefly to cool the radiator and then shuts off until the temperature reaches the turn on point again. But during aircon use the fan spins constantly to cool the aircon matrix by the radiator. If the fan is wearing out, it may be able to run for short periods during normal operation but not for prolonged use such as aircon usage. Simply replace the fan. That's all I can suggest, but if you pop onto "cxoc forum" they are a group of xsara owners so collectively have a huge knowledge base. Good luck!!

    Im not 100% sure to be honest, your best bet is to pop onto cxoc (citreon xsara owners club) and have a check on there, theyre really helpful. Ive taken a few min to see if i could find out but its likely its integrated into another component.

  • @phipck
    @phipck  11 років тому

    thanks for adding that info Steve, you're right, with aircon on the coolant fan should run on slow, at least you can ensure the fan is functional this way. But the only way to check the resistors is to get access to them, not a great issue with the Xsara coupe..... doesnt sound so easy with the Piccasso!

    Hiya guys I,'ve had the engine overheat warning on my Picasso and after reading your comments checked see if the fan came on when the a/c was on and it didn't does that point to the resistors ?
    Kind regards

    • @phipck
      @phipck  9 років тому

      blake1daniel2 hey there, to narrow down the fault do some simple tests without a multimeter. first get the car up to temp so that the thermostat opens. Then turn the air con on, does the fan come on. if not, leave the car running while stationary with some revs does the overheat warning start? if the overheat warning is sounding (around 100 degrees) does the fan cut in before 110 degrees? If the fan does indeed kick in between 100 and 110 then the fan is indeed working and its likely the resistors. To be honest you can avoid that process if you know how to use a multimeter and follow the basic ideas in the video, pull one resistor and check if it has open circuit. Its probably quicker and safer than running up the car to temp, plus you will need to pull the resister anyway

      The world of Phip thanks a lot for the advice checked the resistors and they had both blown refitted 2 New ones had a run out and checked the a/c and fan comes on so looks like it's fixed . Thanks a bunch for the video learnt a lot

    • @phipck
      @phipck  6 років тому

      Hi Zdravkochris, yes this did resolve my issue. If your problem is caused by a blown resistor like mine was then this will fix the problem. Of course checking the resistance like I did will make it clear if the resistors are ok or faulty. I hope this helps and best of luck!

    • @phipck
      @phipck  8 років тому

      +Princes Joinery Hey there, my first thoughts would be coolant temperature sensor, as they can missread when theyre faulty. This would tell the system that your over heating and cause your symptoms. I dont have my xsara anymore but happy to help

  • @phipck
    @phipck  11 років тому

    hey there, sorry i didnt notice your comment and for some reason it has been flagged as spam! I have unflagged it. Anyway, yes changing the blown resistor from that front panel fixed the fan not cutting in. However my fan was cutting in when the air con was turned on and it also cut in at about 100 degrees which is a safety feature.
    Im sure you have since resolved your issue but if not (and for others reading this) check first the fan fuse, then the resistors. Hope its all working for you!

    hello everybody. i have a problem with my citroen xsara. i need to know where my fuse for the rear window heater is. and i know that it runs over a relay but i don't know if it is located in my drivers cabin or if it is located at the engine. can you please help me?

    • @phipck
      @phipck  9 років тому

      +Sephirothtv Hey there, there are two fuse boxes as you have already found, I have looked on CXOC and my manual and it could be classed as "additional heating" and be fuse F1 in the engine bay, I may be wrong but its a start. I found the following thread showing all fuses, hopefully this helps more than my educated guess! www.cxoc.net/index.php?topic=8488.0

    hi.. i saw you're very helpful..i have some problem with my car.. my xsara picasso LX 1.6 petrol,non-aircond, it had its temperature shoots up when im in traffic with warning light...i assumed the fan not working before... i sent to mechanic and i still noticed the temperature is easily shoots up when im driving in traffic but now the fan is working which cool down the tempt...however, after i parked, the radiator seems make a noise for about 5 minutes ( i thought its a fan but its not).... i searched the web and not sure is it about the sensor or thermostat or blocked radiator or etc.... what i noticed is when im driving fast the car is not overheating but still the temperature indicator in half... i just bought the car and have no idea about this problem...thanks in advance

    • @phipck
      @phipck  8 років тому

      Hey there, from what you have said it sounds as though the coolant is doing its job, because when driving fast lots of air passes the radiator, and the temperature gauge sitting half way, so no need for the fan. But at slow speeds theres not enough air flow so the coolant system should turn the fan on..... if its overheating then i would suggest the fan isnt cutting in. From memory, as i no longer have the car, your temperature should be about 90 when the thermostat opens, so when you first start the car, you should see the temperature gauge slowly warm to 90 then drop down suddenly as the stat opens and mixes with the cooler liquid in the radiator. After a short while this should settle at about 90. If the temp doesnt reach 90 then it could be a sign the thermostat or temperature sensor is faulty. If it does settle at about 90 driving fast then your thermostat is likely fine and you can ignore that side of the system. The other side of the system is the sensors and electrics, first check that when hot does the fan actually spin, can you see it? From memory the system will run up to about 100 degrees before showing any warning, at about 110 degrees (possibly slightly higher) an emergency circuit should cut in and fire up the fan, be very very cautious testing this because of course you need to turn the car off immediatly if it reaches such temperatures and no fan cuts in. If you can hear the fan cut in but it doesnt look like its actually spinning then it could be a faulty fan clutch (if it is of that design) or faulty motor, noise but no function would suggest its trying to work when required but the fan motor is the issue. Its difficult to diagnose without seeing the fault as it happens but hopefully that helps a little?

      If it's overheating in traffic you can turn on the heater full blast. That should also bring the temp down

    hey Phip. good tutorial U got here. my Xsara picasso A/C doesnt start. not even the normal air. even if I want to clear the humidity inside the windows i cant. when starting the A/C, the fan doesnt work, not even can ear clicks. ive seen the fuses and theres one (40amp) that doesnt get any power. i will try to gather more info. if U got a clue I would apreciate the help.

    • @phipck
      @phipck  8 років тому

      hey there Nelson, sounds like youre going to have to check the continuity of the wiring if you arnt getting power to the fuse itself. I dont have the xsara anymore so cant run any checks myself but a basic multi-meter checking resistance (Ohms) and following the wiring should narrow it down. These cars are a few years old now and damp can cause corrosion in the wiring. Let us know how you get on, good luck!

      that is what im going to do. i have power on the 5amp fuse, but none at the 40 amp. under the hood, thers other fuse which I have power also. i will star from the spot u show on the tutorial, and ill keep on going from there.any way thanks for the tip and ill keep u posted so u can help some1 else

      good evening m8.
      so, today i started my xsara picasso 1.6 petrol forom 2001, and the AC worked. well, doesnt run cold cause dont have GAS. STRANGE??!?!?! i doubt that tomorrow works....
      do you know where i can get the wiring diagram from the fuse box. 40 AMP fuse has power now..... but where does he connects to?? where does the power comes from??? it would make my life easier. thanks in advance
