Mercedes 190E 2.6 (W201, M103) - Thermostat Replacement

Thermostat housing is made-up of two sections. To access thermostat, housing top section has to be removed.
Challenges:
1. Housing top half would not come off (i.e., stuck to bottom half).
Use a soft-faced hammer to tap the top of the housing to
shock loose gasket/corrosion; then tap housing neck from
the bottom to separate the two sections.
2. Thermostat stuck inside housing bottom section.
Use screwdriver to pry-up thermostat from housing.

can you use sandpaper to scrape out corrosion?

Yes, or to make your life easier you can use a parts cleaner/PB blaster with a steel brush to clean as well
