  • I played Scott Joplin's Pine Apple Rag on a 1915's piano. This is probably the sound that Scott Joplin heard when playing his ragtimes! Listen to how it was.

Agree! Scott Joplin is so much about rhythm, timing and tempo. It takes a highly skilled musician to dare, because timing is everything in this music.
This particular pianist is brilliant, solid as a rock, he nails every note perfectly and keeps up the good flow in a constant tempo, almost like a metronome. So much energy and so relaxing, all at the same time! I am deeply impressed!!

His legacy is very strange. He died young, and ragtime was mostly forgotten in the following decades, but then thanks to one album and a movie in the 1970s his music finally received the praise it deserved.

It wasn’t ragtime played in the Wild West as that only came in at the end of the 19th century. Westerns most frequently include that anachronism, though, but it’s most likely it was parlor songs or campfire songs played instead.

Scott Joplin had rather a sad life, and he died as a pauper. He worked as a pianist in brothels, and composed much of his music for sensuous dancing in the saloons. Many of his rags and waltzes were named after, or for, women who worked there. He soon caught syphilis, which caused him mental problems and an early death. He also wrote a couple of operettas, the first of which was lost, along with a number of other unpublished works, when he was evicted from his lodgings by an unpaid landlord.
It's fascinating that his music lives on to inspire plenty people who have no idea about why the music was written, and who often rattle through it at more than twice the intended speed.

I know this is going to sound strange but...Vinheteiro is actually a vampire, the portrait in the background is him as a child in the 1600's and he was obviously bitten as an adult. Since vampires don't sleep...but they also can't go out during the day he uses that time to practice the piano in the dark (hence why he doesn't actually need to look at his hands). He also uses his hypnotic stare to order people to subscribe to his channel. It's safe to say that all this plus the amount of antiques littered around...it's pretty conclusive evidence of him being some form of hellspawn.

That’s because Mario music is directly inspired by ragtime. If you play the Super Mario World song slowly, it’s just a normal ragtime song.

I just have begun listening to these piano playing songs in the past week or so. Previously, I was only casually familiar with ragtime. Just today I recognized this song in a re-run of a 70's local TV channel's late-night comedy skit show. The skit had this as the background music played from a violin and flute (I think). It was shocking to recognize this song whereas before I would have been oblivious!
In the skit a landlord was showing a precarious person seeking a room for rent. At the final highest 5th floor level, the room was $2 per day. When he settled in the room, he turned around and the whole back wall was gone - they made a skit from a building that was being demolished (Big Chuck and Li'l John, Cleveand, OH, USA).
Great demonstration, BTW, and excellent playing.
