  • The Entertainer, by Scott Joplin played on an old piano. Honky-tonk has the sound closest to the pianos of the time, and probably that was how ragtime sounded in its time. This piano is inaccurate and probably Scott Joplin was alive when this piano was made.

    The joy I felt the day I finally found Scott Joplins home/apartment in St Louis early 1980’s. A gentleman opened the door to us surprised to see visitors. He invited us in and I actually sat on Scott’s bench at Scott’s very old piano. He found my favorite of Mr. Joplins music called “Solace”. I will never forget that moment .

      When you take two identical strings, tune them to the same note, then detune one of them very slightly it produces 'reverb' -- that's the way this piano is tuned, a Honky Tonk piano

    • @keithhayes3600
      @keithhayes3600 5 років тому +98

      Mick Kennedy Not reverb, dissonance. Old strings, worn out hammers, dampers, lack of maintenance, etc. creates the sound. A piano is like a car. It get worn with usage and age. Regular tuning is a must. Old beer soak saloons are not a good place for a large musical instrument.

    • @mickkennedy1344
      @mickkennedy1344 5 років тому +26

      @@keithhayes3600 Why do you think I put the word 'reverb' in quotes? -- and it was what he was talking about anyway. Musicians have known for years the trick of slightly detuning, particularly 2 rhythm guitars -- I used to do it many years ago when playing in bands, it enlivens the sound, makes it sound like 'stereo' -- cancellation of beats is what a piano tuner uses to perfectly tune paired strings, pianos, 12-string guitars, mandolins, bouzoukis

    This song hits a very special chord for me.
    Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago and being poor, as a child, I remember my parents would save up all year to take us kids to the Six Flags Great America Amusement Park. When you walk into the park, there was a sprawling garden full of every color of flower you can imagine, a huge wishing pond and directly ahead, as a kid, looked like the biggest carousel ever created. There were stands serving fresh popcorn, cotton candy, you can hear the roar of crowds on the rollercoasters and I remember holding my parents hands, as excited as a kid can be.
    Throughout the park were speakers blaring old rag time music and I always remembered this song playing on the loudspeakers, smelling the popcorn and cotton candy, seeing all the bright flower colors, hearing laughter and screaming on all the rides. I sit here, crying, of how wonderous those moments in time were.
    Thanks for playing this song, a big fan of yours, but, this one really tugged at my soul.

    My grandfather taught himself to play piano by ear starting with this song. He loved ragtime. We asked him yo play “Ragtime Daddy” when we’d visit as kids, lying on the floor as we watched his feet move under the baby grand.
    In the end, the cancer had taken most of his energy and he became too weak to play. The last time we saw him, he said he had just had a blood transfusion and was feeling great. We asked him to play The Entertainer (“Ragtime Daddy”) for us. I was in my 30s, but I lay on the floor and watched his feet, knowing it would be the last time, and crying the entire time.
    He died a couple months later, this piece playing his photo montage at his funeral.
    Every time I play, I remember sitting with him as he taught me. Every now and then, I will listen to this song and just remember him.
    Thank you for the great memories. ☮️💟

      Not too slow either - I have heard way too many pianists play this tune at a slow, very dragging pace, and have heard the evidence that Joplin himself played it at a nice clip. I think Vinheteiro does hit this perfectly - fast enough and not too fast, the perfect middle ground of speed that this song needs.

    My grandmother just died recently (March 20), before her death since January I have been putting her music (mainly Rag) on the living room computer, she is blind and she spent most of it here in the living room in her rocking chair Favorite, this song being the main one that I put on for her, the first time she heard she came from her room to the living room asking who is playing the piano (there is an electric piano in the room) to which I answered that I had placed music , From that moment I began to place more on the opportunity that was presented, and now I only place it to remember her, with this story I want to tell the owner of the channel thank you very much for having touched and delighted my grandmother in her last 3 months of Life, I really appreciate your music and I will continue listening to this song to remember her with affection!

    I took lessons from her weekly. Bought a Yamaha with first pay check.

      @@nerfwalid9568 piano is not like a guitar where you don't need sheet music. On a guitar, you know where your chords are, you know the patterns of where your scales are going to be and you can just improvise stuff without having to play solos note for note every time. On a piano, you're using your left hand to play bass notes and your right hand to play scales. I can't imagine how hard that must be to do without any sheet music to keep track of where you're supposed to be in the song. That's why you don't see a whole lot of pianists playing without sheet music, because it's not easy.

    • @ADrunkBassist
      @ADrunkBassist Рік тому +2

      @@mr.mcnuggies i can't argue with that since I don't play piano myself. I was merely reflecting that guitar is a much easier instrument to learn because the chords and the scales are always the same shape once you learn them and because you don't have to use both hands to play notes, one hand for bass notes and one hand for higher pitches. To me, that would be much easier to do with sheet music whereas with a guitar, you don't necessarily even need a tab to learn a song.

    Just ran across this video. Very well played. I am a Piano technician, the man who taught me the trade always played this, to check the tuning after he was finished tuning the Piano. As a piano tech, I must point out that needs a good Tuning. Also, I feel the need to point out that the Fall Board proves it's not an early 1900's Piano, because at that time, most up through the 1950's Piano Fall Boards we're made in two parts with a Hinge in-between. Also (Unless it's been refinished) an early 1900's Piano finish would be darkened over time, due to sun damage, and oxidation. Just looking at it I would say It's somewhere between the 1950's and 1960's (1960's there was a movement to modernize old pianos looks by chopping the top and adding a mirror...) But "Almost" ALL pianos before the 1950's had a 2 part Fall Board. I can always be wrong, but that is my opinion.

      You are not wrong. There has been many times where I perfectly tune a woman's piano, just to have to go back a few days later because she said it didn't sound right. I literally go back through and detune the middle strings slightly, and they are happy as a Lamb, people get used to hearing it out of tune, think it's out of tune when it's correct. Pianos are a very diverse instrument for experimentation. I've seen people replace their felt hammers with actual hammers (on UA-cam), ice seen people out tacks in their hammers. Me I always wanted an piezoelectric pickup for a piano so I can hook guitar pedals up to it... Maybe one day I'll do it.

      I was thinking something similar. I had a piano that was built in 1918. It was close to black in color and did not sound much like this one as it was tuned every year. I played this exact piece on it quite a bit. Loved Joplin loved my old piano which was originally my grandmothers.

      My old spinet has a tambour fall board. For real. I think it's from the 1940's. The piano is covered in ancient naugahyde, very little finished wood. The piano dealer said he thought he had seen a similar piano in an old Jerry Lewis movie. I will admit the piano being played doesn't seem to have a 100 year old finish, but more than that I cannot say.

    Now the curtain is going up
    The Entertainer is taking a bow
    Does his dance step and sings his song
    Even gets all the audience to sing along
    Yes he knows just what he must do
    Knows how to bring down the house when he's through
    Snappy patter and jokes
    He knows what pleases the folks
    The Entertainer the star of the show
    It was in Vaudeville
    and he was on the bill
    With all the singers, dancers, acrobats and clowns
    There was a dancing bear
    Even a dog act there
    And a comedian who never let 'em down
    But when he came on
    To do his favourite song
    He really wowed 'em
    In the cities and the towns
    They came from near and far to see the Vaudeville star
    The entertainer

I know the feeling. Keep up the good work.
