Rabbi I am still trying to escape the belief that I'm worthless and of course Jesus had to die for me. I'm a mess. There is no good in me. I am the person you are talking about Rabbi. I fell hook, line and sinker. I gave credit for everything in life that I overcame to a man named Jesus. So thankful for you. It's hard being a former Christian and accepting everything you believed is a lie....it's getting a little easier, thanks to you!

Yeshua/Jesus is the Son of GOD. I safely can say, if what I believe in and later down the line it's Not! The Truth then there is Nothing that I can lose from I believe in. Now for someone who does Not! believe in the One True Gospel, which is the Good News of Yeshua Ha'Mashiach. Those folks as the most precious thing that they will lose...and that is a person soul. So where I stand I will Not! Lose anything because what I Truly believe in. All those who do Not! I Don't! Debate Nor! Do I argue the Holy Scripture's, I will say this there will be many people that will be Very Surprised when they see that whoever claim to be the Jewish messiah, and I am speaking about most Jews who Don't! Thank You! My mother and grandmother hid my ancestry to protect me. I grew up listening to Yiddish (They said it was low german!) Mogan David wine was always on the counter and matzah. I was told that on pain of something close to death that I could never get a tattoo. I read the Christian bible from cover to cover & was always amazed that the "Old Testament" had nothing in common with the "new". I was raised Lutheran, however the trinity never made any sense. I rejected the notion that HaShem suddenly disappeared only to retire to Miami! I realized when I was young that something was being hidden from me. I guessed that I was Jewish. From my earliest memory I embraced Zionism & the many books that described the return from Mila 18 to Exodus. I now read the Tanakh from cover to cover every night and embrace my return! Many times I feel lost in between both worlds. I'm no longer part of that which was used to protect me & cannot return. Living as a Jew is a mystery & sometimes feels like stolen valor since I was denied any Jewish culture growing up. Thank you Rabbi for giving me some solid ground to stand on!

The One True Creator G_d forbids 🚫 Adultery!!! But Christians want people to believe that G_d got another man's wife pregnant just like Zeus used to run around doing. Christianity is a lie! Christianity adopted way too many idolatrous and pagan beliefs contrary to what The One True Creator G_d actually said. We follow the instructions of the One True Creator G_d!!! Not the lies of Christianity!
Adonai, is Adonis, a mortal in love with a goddess, the goddess is Ela and christians follow christ, to the father light. Gen 1:1 opens with the Hebrew letters BRSTBRLHM, traditionally rendered BaReSiT BaRa eLoHiM and translated word-for-word, “In the beginning…created…Gods…” The same consonants in the same order, BRSTBRLHM, can be correctly rendered BaR iS, eT aB oR, eLa Ha eM, “Son of Man, Father Light, Goddess the Mother,” What we have are two tanslations where if a person is ignorant, YHWH means Lord, and is Baal worship. Israel is the name given to Jacob, and it was jacob that made a pact with god, judah is only one son, and the son that was chosen by god was Joseph. Read your torah correctly.

Christianity and English keep mistranslating so much and then they totally misunderstand what they mistranslated and corrupted. The Christian's bibles are just very badly mistranslated and corrupted versions of the Torah/Tanach, The Real Word of G_d.

Christianity and English keep mistranslating so much and then they totally misunderstand what they mistranslated and corrupted.

We subjectively, as humans, favor our own existence over our non-existence, and pleasure and happiness over pain and sadness. Given those subjective goals as humans, we can take steps objectively more or less likely to achieve those goals. That basic framework is all that's necessary for morality, with no theism or supernatural elements involved. Yes, that means the most terrible things are only subjectively wrong from a human perspective, and not from some purely mathematical or logical one, but we are the subjects judging and acting, so our subjective experience is important to us practically and philosophically. With divine command theory, harm to others is irrelevant, happiness is irrelevant, every part of our subjective experience except our own fear of pain is irrelevant, because adherents think the man with the big stick gave a command so they have to obey it or be punished. With divine command theory, everything is permissible, every kind of atrocity imaginable is permissible if so commanded by the divine subject, which means it still isn't even a system of morality, it's a system of divination and following random gut feelings and dreams. With respect, rabbi, with my system I have a basis for judging the horrific, harmful actions of the legendary Joshua, for example, whereas you have none if you believe it was divinely commanded. Divine command theory is morally bankrupt and a disaster to implement in practical reality if you're telling people they're right to start wars based on voices in their heads.

Hmm. Seeing Matthew speak is much like hearing myself as a young atheist before many more rounds of having my egg boiled. When the Rabbi contends that good and evil can only exist if there is a god -- well that is tit for tat with arguments the atheist community is well familar with from Christians. The normal objection here is that objective good and evil can only exist within a frame of reference. Something I'm sure the Rabbi has encountered from Derek (Mythvision). An athiest's frame of reference is *normally* a free society where people can live in harmony with each other. Things can be objectively good or evil within this frame of reference. The religous also can only have objective good or evil within a frame of reference. But the religous place their frame of reference within one diety or another. Never the less I praise Rabbi Tovia in this work. Like most other ex-evangelicals I had a rough, gut-wrenching breakup with Christianity. Also like many ex-christians the beginnings of my souring relationship with god started in attempting to read the Jewish Bible (Not that the NT was better) cover to cover equipped only with the way I'd been taught to read it in church. Unlike most other ex-christians, I maintained what is likely to be a life-long fascination with the texts and their history. I think the Rabbi does great work for atheists such as myself in introducing us to ways to approach and understand the Jewish Bible as originally intended, equipping us to look at these texts in the way that the culture that produced them looks at them, not through the supercessionalist, at times anti-semitic lens of our former churches.
It is possible to deny and give explanations for denials that makes sense to self, however, if we desire to seek the truth we can ask of Gd to be led to truth.

Your point about midrashic authority is an interesting one, that essentially all extensions of the Abrahamic tradition are relying on that method to some extent. I think that's that is the methodology which produced the bulk of the Tanakh as well, though. As you said, Daniel is trying to re-interpret a prophecy from Jeremiah, to salvage it in what I think is a midrashic way. Jeremiah and Ezekiel are both trying to re-interpret prophecies about the kingdom of David lasting forever, and are having to do apologetics for that divine promise/prediction failing in a big, surprising way. Jeremiah, I think, is actually written much later (which is part of why he's not mentioned where he should be in 2 Kings, to warn of the Babylonian invasion), and in a way he is trying to further reconcile the eventual outcome of Persia & the Second Temple with Ezekiel's earlier accounts, prob. as a real eyewitness who only expected doom and gloom. That is to say, I see Jeremiah as midrashic. As you said Isaiah talks about events that span hundreds of years, between Assyria's invasion to Persian liberation, and it seems to me almost all of Isaiah is midrash from the character's brief appearance in Kings. People sometimes say Lamentations is written by Jeremiah, but I think it just as likely to be multiple, later authors imagining the plight based on Ezekiel's accounts... making it yet more midrash. Joshua ben Nun, in the Deuteronomic histories is a brutal warlord who fights beside his god on the battlefield, and the Joshua ben Nun of Chronicles is a boring farmer who never visits the west side of Israel... making the entire book of Joshua midrashic.... especially since it isn't supported by the archeological evidence, either on a large scale or by smaller details such as Rahab's hollow castle wall not actually existing at Jericho. I think the first two chapters of Job are a joking midrash about the leader of the lying spirits whom Yahweh Elohim sends to trick Ahab's prophets, as well as the absurd scene of Isaiah telling Hezekiah his entire family and kingdom is doomed and his reaction is, "Awesome, praise god." Then, after that in Job, you get like forty more chapters of dialectic midrash about this little joke about a couple events in Kings.
And then we have the Yahwist and the Priestly sources, the stories of Moses and then their later creative reboots with added details and miracles and lessons and... uh oh, we're back to midrash. And that's Torah.
And then you go back to Genesis, and it has stories borrowing & commenting on the Ugaritic creation myth with Marduk splitting the sea goddess Tiamat in half to create the sky. Or the Noah flood myth responding to the Babylonian flood myth about a god Enlil who *regrets* filling the world with his noisy children, so decides to drown them all. I'm not saying, as people sometimes do, that everything in the Bible was stolen from neighboring cultures, but there is plenty of evidence they are utilizing the phrases and tropes from their cultures and basically writing midrash to say, "What, your god killed Lotan? No, our god would have killed Lotan. The seven-headed dragon of the seas, who we then fed to adoring crowds on the land? Yeah, no. Our guy did that, your guy is fake. And our guy did it for a good reason, whereas yours is just a wild man. So there."
So I guess my real point, rabbi, is that it's midrash all the way down... until you reach a layer of truly fantastical folktales that nobody seriously believes anymore, and a small handful of royal historians who get some mundane details correct about kings and wars with neighboring empires in the 700s-300s BCE. Almost everyone on top of that is doing midrash. It's an amazing tradition, and clearly one that has produced a lot of inspirational ideas and artwork through the years, and kept some communities close through very rough times... but that tradition of storytelling is most of the tradition (especially the poetic messianic parts you're letting yourself get far too convinced of without good evidence). The more I look into it, that's what I see, that's what explains the layers in the text with varying theology, and accounts that don't quite agree with each other, and epics that left no physical trace, and wordplay on top of wordplay instead of strict scientific or historical methods. The word midrash represents the driving cultural engine of nearly all of scripture, in my honest assessment.

It is imperative to make distinctions among these, or the whole framework of the arguments Mr. Singer presents falls apart. My experience is that most practicing Jews conflate Christianity (hereafter, Xnty) w/ Catholicism. Catholics & Protestants both hunted & butchered my harmless spiritual forebears, Anabaptists, like they were rabid animals. I'm sure the teacher knows this, bc he's a learned man.

So God wanted a "faith based" covenant with Abraham. Abraham became impatient with waiting on the covenant and planted a seed in the slave woman which in turn created a separate covenant. This covenant is the Old Testament/Mosaich Law. The law is after the flesh and those who follow it are slaves to the law. Then notice Isaac was born of a miracle as Sarah was way beyond childbearing age so it took faith for this covenant to be brought forth. Then when Jesus who also had a miraculous birth being born of a virgin was brought forth which takes "faith" to believe on this covenant then the Covenant that God wanted Abraham to produce was brought forth.
Before the millennial dispensation begins those jews and gentiles who put faith in the New Testament covenant of faith in Jesus will reside in heaven during the millennium under the Melchizedek priesthood rules where all residents are kings and priests because under a Melchizedek priesthood you can combine the two offices. During the millennium God will raise up 2 anointed messiah ben David and messiah ben joseph to rule on earth. David will be the earthly king and messiah ben joseph having the birthright (1 chronicles 5:2) will qualify to be the earthly high priest. The aim of the christian life is to be filled with the holy spirit and be obidient to it. The reason why so many christian are so unsure about the the truth of the gospel, is that they rely too much on the word and traditions, and not enough time being in the spitit.
