You can. It makes the fabric softer and gets rid of the sizing. I will admit that I don't usually unless I am dyeing the fabric 😅. I do after the stitching is finished most of the time.
Do you know if stain remover spray would be okay to use? And do you ever have problems with bleeding threads? I've never washed my projects before but I want to. I'm just nervous to wash them
I haven't used a stain remover spray. I have used a Tide Pen to get stains out that I can see. I haven't had issues with bleeding and hope that I never do lol. If you are worried wash in cooler water and use a color catcher just in case. I only wash pieces that I am certain of the thread and fabric quality. I wouldn't feel comfortable washing a random kit with unknown threads and I don't wash projects with hand-dyed fabrics or flosses.
I'm new to stitching and I just finished a piece and I was only gonna wash it because it's a gift, but it's got red and cream colors and I'm worried about the red running. Any advice? Thank you
I have washed stitching with red before. You can test the skein with a shout color catcher to see if it runs. If it doesn't and you want to still watch it I would still use a color catcher just in case. And wash in cooler water.
I have been stitching for 45 years and I do not recommend washing. I do recommend washing your hands before you stitch so there are no oils to get on your stitching. I do not use a hoop, I stitch in hand. Sooner or later, a floss will bleed all over a project while being washed and it is heartbreaking. Many kit manufacturers used to recommend washing back in the day. The floss was dyed in a way that is no longer permitted, so the flosses that were colorfast are no longer. Good luck.
I love doing crosstitch also my past time work....thank for sharing yours😊
Thanks for watching!
