That is a lovely cross stitch! Also the color stamped on the fabric can distort the lighter threads. Washing it brightened it. Thank you for the great tips😊

Does the project have to be flat?

It doesn't have to be flat, you can fold it if the canvas is too big for the container. Just make sure that the water is deep enough to cover it.
