as someone who is going to have to build a garage this video is extremely informational and easy to understand (edit to add) watching you nail that top plate was awesome to see in real time the sturdiness it adds!
Great video and informations! I would like to have seen a little more about the framing of the doors. I just have a questions do you have any videos that show how to replace a rotted section of a wall on an existing garage? If not it be a good subject matter for future video. I would like to see your take on that. Thanks for the feedback! Keep up the great work and keep those videos coming!
Just found your channel and I have to say you are amazing, whilst still remaining humble. My wife and I are trying to build our retirement tiny home. Thanks to your channel I am less terrified. Might you have anything in the realm of a tiny home on a budget? Again thank you for the knowledge and the chuckles.
Just stumbled into your channel. Enjoyed watching your frame out. I live west of Dubuque, Iowa. Here you rarely see a garage built with rafters anymore. Just about everything is trusses. I would bet that rafters are cheaper.
Hi I like you videos. Like building too. And I generally build on my own also. I was wondering what the max snow load is on a building like this one you are making now. I was also wondering why there is no over hang on the front or rear of the building . Thanks for your videos .
I think the snow load depends on the pitch in Midwest also used to haul to builders of everything owned a sand and gravel company so fill material hauled to thousands of garages over my life time some years one company would build over a thousand garages in itself then house builders was busy i would have to work when its hot out so they could pour concrete in the morning before it got hot P
Naps are important. Wish I had your oomph, been wanting to finish the walls in my basement for over a year now. Never have time or drive to actually get it done. One of the walls I gotta rip the blanket insulation off of if I want it to match the stairs, that's not gonna be fun. Though my cats did get down there a few times and 'help' start that project. They were literally climbing the walls tearing little chunks out of it. The other walls I just sacrifice a couple inches of floorspace so it's no big deal. The extra insulation is nice. Getting the wood to the basement is the biggest pain.
Have you ever used 2x4 recycled plastic "lumber" for the base plate?? Aside from the up front cost, usually around $55 for one 10' board, the pros include never rots, and is impervious to rodents and bugs. We have all seen "pressure treated" lumber rot and provide a cozy living space to termites and/or carpenter ants.
I was enjoying the video, laughing at the subtle jokes. But then you had me at "watch an idiot build things" bc that would 100% be me if I filmed my attempts and efforts. Thank you for this know how! Plan to be around to see as much as I can!
What thickness of osb did you use on roof, maybe I missed it. Also, we used to put bottom plate 1/2” in and set osb flush with concrete. I don’t know if that was right or wrong that’s just how we did it. Good job
7/16 OSB…I usually frame the walls to the dimension on the print, which is usually the exact size of the slab, which means most of the time the OSB is past the concrete.
Do you have any videos where you do a ridge beam? Like load bearing in place of joists? Not sure if I'm talking out my butt... trying to maximize ceiling space.
Why no rat wall? I realize your sill is pressure treated but even with a sill gasket you can get water leaking under the sill. It’s more work and a bit more money, but well worth it in my opinion. I just finished building my garage, 18 x 22 with one course of 6x8 cinder block and 10’ ceiling.
8 penny nails if you prefer going off the penny designation instead of the length and diameter as I do. Hahaha. Way easier imo. Just note there are various lengths of certain penny nails like 16Ds for example there are 3", 3 1/4" and 3 1/2" 16D nails on the market. Usually the 16D 'sinkers' are a slightly smaller diameter and are 3 1/4" for hand drives.

I've watched a few of your videos now and noticed you tend to put the camera right beside the compressor. I'm not sweating the noise, but you mentioned you were responding to other's complaints. Might consider placement of the camera and the compressor if you are trying to reduce the compressor noise. Not trying to be smart, would have kept it to myself if you hadn't brought it up.
I actually try to keep it away from the compressor as much as I can, when I speed up the video, it seems to amplify the compressor noise…it’s frustrating.
@@MyDIYBuilds Thx for your reply--YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY A MASTER-- can i ask---which direction is the pitch , how much of a pitch and I was wondering...Why would there be a pitch on the slab if the slab is inside the garage. away from water?
You know a person is truly modest when they are working their butt off in the blistering cold whipping winds and then apologizes for the wind noise.
You know a person is truly modest when they use the term "we" when very clearly it is "I".
It is WE! You were there!

There’s no overhang just to save the customer money. I’m not sure what the max snow load is, but I’m in the Midwest, so it’s not insignificant.

You don’t have a window you could slide the wood through?
Nice work as always 👍 I run my sheets vertically as well
We are the rebels!😂
Question, what is your trick for plumbing the walls by yourself. It is very difficult to rack a wall, read the level and nail it off. Just curious
Here.
Reminds me of the one I did a few years ago. I was the roofer, sider, and carpenter. Took about a month though
When I had a crew we used to frame, shingle, and side them!
Enjoy the content as usual👍
Thanks bud!
@MyDIYAdventures Yw!
Was your ceiling joist 2x6? and how do you know what angle to cut the ends of your ceiling joist ( the end near the top plate). thanks good video.
2x6 ceiling joists, the angle is just rough cut to stay below the top of the rafter.
You fought valiantly thru the ADHD and completed editing this.. WTG!!!
Yes! It only took like 2 weeks!😂

It’s only allowed on accessory buildings here.

Goof ball present for duty lol Nice build helped me some thx.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You ever use engineered trusses? I'm considering building my own place, and was curious how I would get trusses in place by myself.
I have done trusses, and I would NOT recommend doing them alone!
Great job building that alone, what does a building like that usually cost to build
The contractor charges about $50 per square foot for the whole garage build.
Good effort. But, seems odd to have 2 garages on city lot. City is ok?
That’s the neighbor’s garage
Hey sensei 👏how much does it cost for material for a job like this?
8 grand-ish

2 3/8”, 8 penny nails

where did you learn this?
Got hired on with a crew as just a helper a million years ago and just went from there!

Why do u plumb the walls AFTER vs Before?????
There’s usually a pitch to the slab, so it has to be done after the walls are up.
@@MyDIYBuilds Thx for your reply--YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY A MASTER-- can i ask---which direction is the pitch , how much of a pitch and I was wondering...Why would there be a pitch on the slab if the slab is inside the garage. away from water?
It’s usually just about an inch of fall towards the door, it allows for snow melting off the cars to run out.
