Alright - we don’t have a lot of time, Indaryn and Ungrien don’t know I’m in here - Romlyn Dreth let me in the back door after selling me some Black Briar on the cheap. There are warning notes to employees everywhere so I feel like everyone’s kind of on edge here at Black Briar meadery.
Anyways, on that note welcome to the next installment of brewing mead recipes from the Elder Scrolls Cookbook. If it wasn’t abundantly obvious, the mead of the day is Black Briar mead. The Black Briars are a powerful crime family located in Riften with deep ties to the Thieves Guild, the Dark Brotherhood, and the politicians of the Rift. Maven is the family matriarch, pulling the strings from the shadows to achieve her goals. She serves as a trusted advisor to the Stormcloak-aligned Jarl Laila Law-Giver, preventing her from looking into the shady underbelly of Riften too closely. However, given the opportunity provided by the Dragonborn siding with the Empire in Skyrim’s Civil War, she will jump at the chance to supplant Laila as Jarl of the Rift. It isn’t abundantly clear when the Black Briar Meadery was opened, but the barkeep at the Bee and Barb Keerava suggests that she was around for a time in Riften that predated the arrival of the Black Briars and the opening of Black Briar Meadery. Their mass produced mead is a top export from Riften, likely due to Maven’s cutthroat business tactics preventing any other meaderies from gaining too much influence (as evidenced by her hostile takeover of Honningbrew Meadery in the Dampened Spirits quest).
We actually tasted this batch of Black Briar before Honningbrew in the Mead & Skyrim series since the recipe says it can be enjoyed sooner than the other ones. I honestly forgot that this one came before the Honningbrew one on the stream since I brewed the Honningbrew first, so this one and the tie-in gaming video on Quench Quest are prequels of sorts. Luckily, as you’re about to see that stream was actually when I debuted the new microphone, so the audio is good even if we hadn’t rolled out the greenscreen at that point.
Coming back to the Black Briar mead a year later, it has definitely gotten simultaneously richer and yet less sweet. There’s still a syrupy berry characteristic, but that clove earthiness has unfolded in complexity and the cinnamon really takes over the finish. Honestly, it might be closer to what that bottle of Black Briar Reserve might taste like…
Like with the Honningbrew and Dampened Spirits videos, there is a gameplay edit of the Loud and Clear questline over on Quench Quest right now where we inadvertently cut off Maven’s supply of honey. Again, this video sort of serves as a prequel to the Dampened Spirits one, because it was that break in Maven’s supply chain that spurned her into action to seize control of Honningbrew Meadery.
I really do want to know what that bottle of Black Briar Reserve tastes like…
