My 2020 TRD ORP only has 40k miles on it so I’m good for another 15 years at least (had my 2005 Limited 4R to 196k with zero issues). Hopefully Toyota will have the 4Runner issues ironed out by then. I think the grey plastic overfenders kind of ruins the look. The 5th gen looks much nicer for that reason. But this is a design problem that's easily resolved. I think they had black plastic over fenders on most of the 4th gen models before they "corrected" it after a couple of years. I actually like that it doesn't have a hood scoop and I like the 'TOYOTA' branding on the rear liftgate where the 5th gen has that kind of weird looking Toyota logo there.
Great job on the video Jon! Thanks for making it. The matte black fender flares look great. I painted the ones on my 5th gen to achieve that exact look.
Never realized it before, but that side profile is really not flattering with that hard line stamped in the door. The boxyness of the front and the air dam looks like it has much worse approach angle. First impressions, I thought the press car looked kind of good, but this looks hideous.
Can't wait to test drive one of these. Always liked the looks of the 5th gen, but it drove like a tank on the road compared to newer trucks like the Colorado. Hearing the new suspension makes this one much better. I like that the TRD Off Road has the flat black trim compared to the piano black on the higher trim levels. More horsepower, more torque, and better gas milage is a big win.
Oh yeah!! You tell them!! Your ancient 5 cylinder V6 with 18 mpg(if you are lucky) and zero to 60 north of 8 seconds down hill and a ride like a military hummer is so much better than a new modernized 4runner. You people make me laugh. Always the same response. Keep thinking you've done the right thing. Lol. You didn't.
It’s funny AND probably a correct prediction but don’t you think it’s someone else’s and not Toyota’s fault? How about government fuel economy mandates?
I hope that the prices wont be insane since they havent announced them still. Hopefully reading everyone's angry comments on pricing and seeing tundras sit will help. (Im dreaming)
I added the fitted black fender flares to my Super White II SR5 premium, with the retro Yoda grill.. 2 years ago. Nice to see the 6th gens following my lead 😁
Do you think they are delaying its release cause of the backlash the Tacoma is having with its price and 4 cylinder only offering. Honestly I like the new Passport better in the looks department, obviously its shortcoming is it’s not a true off-roader. I guess I don’t like its non distinctive front end styling. It looks like someone chopped off the front end of a Tacoma/Tundra and stuck it on a more distinctive rear end.
I think either they’re genuinely having production difficulties (less likely but entirely possible) or (more likely) they’re creating artificial scarcity to raise prices.
Jon, thanks for posting. My audience is going to have a field day with this vehicle. Does it look cheap, yes. Will people still buy it, yes. Time will tell how it will hold up. Mrs. Rev Nation would want to go for a base SR5 cloth with heated seats. I hope they includes a power liftgate.
Glad you put up a video with measurements and real impressions! Appreciate the detailed content as always. Very curious on the pricing relative to the rest of the Toyota lineup especially the LC. Heated cloth, sway bar disconnect and rear locker...I like how this is equipped...just ready for the price already!
Thanks for the video Jon. This 6th generation will take a few years to work out the bugs and reliability. I remember how drastic my ‘94 second generation was from the first generation. It did take some time to adjust and the second generation was my favorite generation for years (nearly 30 years). I recently purchased a ‘24 5th generation TRD Pro and absolutely love it. Now you talk about a tech upgrade! I will skip this 6th generation and at my rate of purchase look for the 10th generation in 30 years (2054), if I am even still alive at that point 😂😂. So many people feel like they have to rush out and buy the latest and greatest. Everyone should hold on and drive and enjoy their favorite generation and not look to always have the newest. Newest does not always equate to the best. When I look back over 30 years of driving my 2nd generation 4Runner it is the experiences and good times and gratitude for having such a reliable and capable vehicle to take my family to amazing destinations. Again, thank you for your reviews, I am a Toyota enthusiast and your videos helped me in my recent purchase of my 5th generation.
I have 1 1995 4runner and 2 1998 4runners i love my 2nd gen more than my 3rd gens, but I don't think I'd buy any toyota truck or suv after 1999 can't stand anything after 200p
@ With 3 4Runners pre 2000 you are set for many years. Hopefully my new 5th generation is as reliable as everyone touts. I will say that I am really enjoying this new ‘24 TRD pro. I laugh when I get questions why I did not wait for the 6th generation and purchased a dinosaur 🤣🤣.
I like the looks of it, especially the old school rear windows. Looks more traditionally 4Runner-y than the current ones. Reminds me of the ‘94 I had way back. Pricewise, I bought a Tacoma OR new in 2010 with the 6MT and manual cloth seats for $31k (around $46k today), so as long as they price this in that ballpark I’m digging it
Reminds me of my beloved 2011 4Runner Trail with the robust cloth seats and textured plastic on the fender flares and door handles. I wasn't a fan of the 6th gen looks initially, but this has me reconsidering. Thanks for sharing it with us, Jon.
I have a 2022 TRD PRO Lime Rush and love it. I’m liking the new 4Runners cloth interior I think it looks great and loving the color it’s awesome. Thanks Jon
I'll stick with my 3rd and 5th gen. They went from simple and durable to complex and built with as much plastic as possible. Wish i could get a brand new 3rd gen
Speaking of going back to their roots, they should've kept to their roots by keeping the door panels soft touch. Every generation of 4Runner has always had soft touch door panels up until this new gen.
I actually like it. One of the big things that I noticed, is that it looks like a full size spare underneath. To me Offroad does not mean donut. Was really surprised to see a donut on the tacomas and tudras (w/20").
I’d rather get a land cruiser 1958, those cloth seats look decent. Very happy I pulled the trigger on a classic silver 24 ORP. Not a chance I’m buying this generation
I wonder if I could get a higher end Land Cruiser with the rounded headlights from the 1958 model. That would be awesome! I am mostly impressed with the Land Cruiser - but I just don't understand yet why they have the Land Cruiser AND the 4Runner in the same showroom.
TRD Jon, I am glad that I purchased a 5th gen 4Runner, the new one looks a lot cheaper, I don't care for rear section from the side view, looks weird. If you are still in the market buy the 5th Gen you won't be sorry!
I'll give it a little grace since its preproduction but it basically looks like an SR5 or lowest trim/package with the OFF road driving features, iirc this is what a lot of the DIY customers were asking for. i can dig it, really bare bones which for someone like me is fine because i can build it out the way I'd want it. hopefully it is significantly cheaper than a more premium package.
Having owned three 4Runners, two of which I still currently own, I was looking forward to the new 4Runner. As many people have pointed out many of the materials on this 4Runner appear cheap. The exterior design of the new 4Runner overall looks good but I would be hesitant to pull the trigger on any new Toyota truck or SUV until they can prove their products are reliable. It also doesn’t help the pricing for these new vehicles has increased quite dramatically. It is hard to justify purchasing a new Toyota these days when the quality of their products is no better than many of their competitors. Hopefully Toyota can make a course correction and get back to producing solid and reliable vehicles.
4Runner is a top tier vehicle, they have such good taste when they make these and the Tacoma. I will say though the exterior style choices are bit strange
One thing that somewhat surprises me is the hard touch plastics. Not that they are there and a lot of it, but just by video alone it seems they are similar if not the same quality as the current Gen, which is to say very good.
A quick pressure wash and they’ll come back pretty easy. I’ve seen 20+ year old examples with 250k miles and after a little work they come back pretty good.
Trying not to be negative on this because I'm a Toyota fan. This is a step backwards in my opinion. Too much Tacoma (I know the original 4Runner and Truck Pre-Tacoma were almost identical) but maybe because I don't like the new Tacoma either. There is one thing I love on the new 4Runner and that is the back side windows that roll on to the roof. That's sweet! I hate to say the truck seems cheap, hate the rear end look and rear lights, throw the electronic lift gate in the trash, can you get a non electric option...NO Im guessing. It going to be more expensive for sure and if the Tacoma sales are any indication, it won't sell like previous models. I don't like the fabric wheel liners (industry standard it seems now...more cheapness). This is more mall crawler than the 5th gen it seems. Thanks for going to look at it Jon. I now love my 5th Gen more and glad I didn't wait!!! Sorry to be a negative Nancy. The car industry as a whole has gone down, so it should be expected.
I bought my ‘24 4Runner TRD O/R non-premium in Classic Silver Metallic for my wife on January 31, 2024 at Toyota of Melbourne for $43,369 plus tax, tag and dealer fees. I read somewhere that the starting price on the same spec 25’s will be around $48,000. That plus no power seat, more tech than I want or need and more plastics, (plus the door handles and mirror on my wifes ‘24 are color matched) is a bit disappointing. It does look good. Better than I expected but still prefer the 24. Glad I bought it when I did. I hope the new power plant proves to be as reliable as the outgoing 4.0.
Amazed by the sheer number of YT comments talking about the Passport as if it’s a similar vehicle to this. It’s almost like people just want the look or appearance of being offroady. I’m sure the Honda is fantastic on the road and still pretty decent on a light trail, and it’s not like I’m saying the 4R is god offroad, it’s just a completely different philosophy and approach to an SUV versus the CUV that is the Passport.
I would say 99.99 pct of 4Runners never see a dirt trail, and yes looks matter. Also coupled with the fact that this redesign looks horrendous and Honda is keeping it's 6 Cylinder, the Passport will overtake 4Runner sales, no doubt. Book it.
@michaelmclovin5098 i don't think it will sell more than 4runner but definitely be a better vehicle. Toyota makes great motors but in the end honda is actually top dawg on motors. They call themselves a motor company before car company. Just hard to top the legendary name of the 4runner.
@@mtfishingwizard Passport is a unibody CUV that (for better or worse) rides on a shared architecture with such vehicles as the Odyssey. It has a transverse fwd biased drivetrain with no mechanical center transfer case. It’s a completely different philosophy. It very well may be a better daily driver and still meet 99% of owners wants and needs but it is still fundamentally a different vehicle to be drawing comparisons with.
Thank you for the measurements. The cargo space is one of the top reasons I am buying this SUV and have owned two previous 4Runners. Any chance you could share the width of the cargo area between the two cup holders on both sides?
They can't emission laws are tight worldwide, Biden did this, only trump can fix it. But emission still scheduled for 2027. But that does not stop the worldwide socialist
Lots of haters on here. I like both the 5th gen and the 6th gen. All the 5th gens are sold out around here and no 6th gens have arrived yet. I think the new look is every bit as attractive, and I am glad they kept the retractable rear window. I definitely lean towards low tech and reliability, and I respect the V-6 (I currently have a 2012 Xterra with V-6 and it's getting old) but I am thinking of maybe getting a TRD Off Road hybrid, but I have to see one and drive it first. Thank you Jon for actually putting a tape measure to it; specs usually only include cubic feet which doesn't help much.
This is Toyota’s “try-hard” generation of trucks. Tundra, Tacoma, and 4Runner all look like they are desperate for attention and trying too hard to look macho. 4Runner looks like it went to Scottsdale and got Botox from a bad doctor. Desperately trying to look young and cool.
I felt the same way when I first say the 3rd generation 4runners in 2002, but it grew on me (and a lot of other people) and I still bought one the next year and loved it for 11 years.
I'm fine with the cloth and manual seating on this trim to save cost as long as the savings is passed on to the customers. BUT it definitely needs 3rd row seats.
I think this is the right amount of rugged vs amenities for a 4runner. I hate the big screens and all the safety nonsense blind spot/lane keep assist etc. It needs to be a more analog experience for this kind of vehicle. I'd like to see more ride hight/lose the air dam and some proper A/Ts instead of those little street tires.
Looks like Toyota is moving to make the TRD the base trim package. So glad I bought the ‘24 TRD Off Road Premium. I bet it will still be going strong long after the ‘25’s are headed to the scrap yard.

I’m so happy I bought a 2024 4Runner. Toyota cut corners and costs for themselves everywhere on the new one.
I agree... the 5th gen is the best period...
Ditto
I also bought a 2024 TRD Pro-Terra. Love it. Bought specifically because I wanted the rock solid 6 cyl.
I bought a 23...when I found out 5th gen will on 24 also, I sold my 23 and got a 24 😂
What ever makes you feel better!
I couldn’t be more satisfied with my 18 TRD off road. No rush to upgrade for this.
Absolutely same here.
Me too!
Don't be so cocky. You'll change your tune in about 17 years or so.
@@Zanatos_2024 wow 17 years will be retired by then in a lexus! 🤡 BIG DEAL😂👍 YOU SURE TOLD US
End of an era
Beginning of the next.
@@4Funner-xtmv yeah we will see if it does any justice.
5th gen definitely looks of higher quality. Too bad they didn't offer the 5th generation with some of new tech goodies.
Im in LOVE with this color combo , all truck is Silver and Black !
The Raiders Fan Edition!
Great job on the video Jon! Thanks for making it. The matte black fender flares look great. I painted the ones on my 5th gen to achieve that exact look.
Manual seats in a new-gen, 2025 vehicle says it all. Hey, Honda - that you?!
I'm digging the external design and vibe for sure!
Never realized it before, but that side profile is really not flattering with that hard line stamped in the door. The boxyness of the front and the air dam looks like it has much worse approach angle. First impressions, I thought the press car looked kind of good, but this looks hideous.
Great video man! As always - but I am happy I got my 5th gen 2024 ORP in Underground before it was too late.
Did the same back in October, TRD Off Road Premium...NO Regrets!!! The 6th GEN would be a regret for sure!!
This makes me happy that we got the wife a 2023 TRD Off Road premium, can't put my finger on it but I just like the look of it more.
I bet it will never go off road. Only to the grocery store.
I like it, I like that the hood strut is manual so less things to go wrong, like the manual seats, definitely gonna get one
no hood scoops, no chrome door handles, more hard plastics. wow. I need to see the premium of this if they cheapen out on that as well.
Just another 4R video that completely solidifies I made the right decision not waiting for the 6th gen. 🤣
Yes, you and I both-very glade we purchased a 2024 pro in underground we couldn't be happier.
Super glad I also picked up my 24...wheeew
It's now a TACO Wannabe, but worse...No comparison to the ruggedness of the V6 5th Gens...Toyota, ya dun screwed-up on this venture...Sad!
Lol. You didn't.
@@willthorson4543 🤡
Just realized that there’s a difference in the front bumper in the shape of the cuts on the fender areas compared to the pro. Thanks for the vid Jon!
Good point!
I cant wait for the 2028 twin turbo 1.2 liter 3 banger engine *upgrade!* 😂😂😂😂
It’s funny AND probably a correct prediction but don’t you think it’s someone else’s and not Toyota’s fault? How about government fuel economy mandates?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahhaha
Tri-turbo inline 3 banger 💪🏽
7th gen 4runner =Quad turbo 1 liter 2 cylinder plugin hybrid for $99K.
I’m waiting for the 2058 quad turbo single cylinder.
Interior is great as usual, makes me happy
Honestly kinda disappointed in this. Thought the TRD Offroad would be better kitted. Pre prod aside.
It's exactly the same as the TRD Offroad Tacoma.
Jon, my first look impressions for the 2025 4Runner make me glad I bought a new 2024 ORP in January.
I heard the delays are due to part availability issues
Coming soon! Will get it to you all as soon as I can.
Looks awesome like the tacoma. So it'll be available 2025?????
I like the looks of it, especially the old school rear windows. Looks more traditionally 4Runner-y than the current ones. Reminds me of the ‘94 I had way back. Pricewise, I bought a Tacoma OR new in 2010 with the 6MT and manual cloth seats for $31k (around $46k today), so as long as they price this in that ballpark I’m digging it
I'm sticking with my '14 limited even with 167K miles
I've got an 04 with 180,000 miles. Runs like new. The only unscheduled issue I've had is that the plastics are all getting a little faded.
Limiteds are the gayest looking 4Runner you can possibly own.
Thank goodness they didn't put all that gloss black trim they used on the TRD Pro!
Thank you, Jon. looks cheap but hopefully affordable
HAH!
Makes me love my 2023 3rd Gen Tacoma TRD O/R even more.
Must not need an SUV then. Solid choice.
Looks cheap
The fact that it cost $60,000 too is just something else
@@makyhianimationsthis one will start in the low 40s
Why do they think it’s ok to go from fully paint matched in the current gen to plastic cladding everywhere.
@@mills3444 62K actually
@@mills3444my base 2021 4R Off Road was $42k, this will be a hair under $50K.
It is a good design and everything looks easy to service and maintain.
Can't wait for my TRD Pro 4runner!
Thanks for the look Jon.
No problem 👍
Limited is the way to go. Third row seating, full time 4x4!
Looks pretty much exactly as my ‘24 Taco OR
Reminds me of my beloved 2011 4Runner Trail with the robust cloth seats and textured plastic on the fender flares and door handles.
I’ll be keeping my 2016 Trail 4 runner for a long time !!!!
Enjoy bro!
I don't think those are recovery points more like shipping tie down points.
The plastic fender flares make it look cheap. They need to bring back the hood scoop.
Is this like the 10 millionth "first look" or detailed look?
Exterior styling is a plus.
I'll keep my 2019, thank you.
4Runner is a top tier vehicle, they have such good taste when they make these and the Tacoma. I will say though the exterior style choices are bit strange
I hate to say it, but I like the 2024s better along with the power train too.
I’ve always felt 4 runners needed mudflaps. Molded and standard from the factory. They’d really save the rocker panels for long timers.
Turn for honda passport 26
One thing that somewhat surprises me is the hard touch plastics. Not that they are there and a lot of it, but just by video alone it seems they are similar if not the same quality as the current Gen, which is to say very good.
Yea the current has a little more soft touch in the doors I feel for a base model. But not much.
I'm willing to wait for the new Nissan Xterra with a V6. Bye, Toyota turbo!
30 year Toyota fan, but the new Honda Passport looks so much better than the new transformer T4R.
Toyota is cheapening everything they make.. They're going back 15 years in time.. Very underwhelming..☹️
It somewhat reminds me of the way the Ford Explorer used to look, but with a few more cuts and lines
Those felt fender liners are a nightmare if you actually drive your vehicle in bad weather often.
A quick pressure wash and they’ll come back pretty easy. I’ve seen 20+ year old examples with 250k miles and after a little work they come back pretty good.
They absolutely suck in the winter with salt crusted roads and mud.
I’m so glad we got a 5th gen! This one looks like hot garbage with a four-cylinder
Well stated 👏
Passport has a new frame. Can't call it a crossover anymore.
It very well may be a better daily driver and still meet 99% of owners wants and needs but it is still fundamentally a different vehicle to be drawing comparisons with.
engine oil and trans temp is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO nice to have like that holy cow.
This looks cheap to me, especially for the price tag
Thank you for the measurements. The cargo space is one of the top reasons I am buying this SUV and have owned two previous 4Runners. Any chance you could share the width of the cargo area between the two cup holders on both sides?
I'll never buy one unless they return to a naturally aspirated 6. 2024 is soooooo much better in every aspect.
Cool. Tires and wheels would have to go though.
Good video. Extra cookie 🍪 points for providing actual measurements for the cargo area! Thank you.
Extreme Toyota/Lexus fanboi here. This looks like cheap garbage. Will not purchase. Ever.
Then not that extreme...
I’m not a fanboy of any brand and I find it pretty decent just like every other brand out there.
@@plaisbois951 enough to have owned 12 in my life, including 2 right now.
@miketroutsdad2102 Nice! Then buy the 4Runner Trailhunter if you are truly "Extreme" to prove us wrong, please.

I just got a brand new 2024 ORP in solar octane, so glad I did
This is Toyota’s “try-hard” generation of trucks. Tundra, Tacoma, and 4Runner all look like they are desperate for attention and trying too hard to look macho. 4Runner looks like it went to Scottsdale and got Botox from a bad doctor. Desperately trying to look young and cool.
Last gen has a more aggressive front end.
I felt the same way when I first say the 3rd generation 4runners in 2002, but it grew on me (and a lot of other people) and I still bought one the next year and loved it for 11 years.
As always, in time it becomes normal and boring then the next generation picks up the 'desperate for attention' look again...rinse repeat
