Hey guys, in this video I go through my technique for drawing skin! All drawing materials are in the description with links to where I purchased mine! :D
Kirsty Partridge Art Would you recommend this paper for rough/aged skin? I'm going to do a portrait of my friends deceased mother and she has quite a few aging lines in the reference photo. I know you're a busy birdy, but any help would be so very much appreciated.
Thanks Kirsty, I soon will be 75 years old and I have been interested in drawing since I was in college. Never took it very serious because I wasn't very good. I'm no artist. But your videos have challenged me to pick up my pencils again after 50 years. Watching all your videos. Loving it again. Thanks Again
This was a very helpful tip. When I ask some artists how they draw smooth skin, they say they put a lot of layers on it ... It's hard for me to believe because using pencils leave a lot of rough marks...
Zarin Tasnin Mathra Thank you very much :D yeah i like this technique just because it is easy once you get the hang of it and it doesn't take as long :)
The idea of more layers is that you fill the tooth of the paper with graphite leaving a smooth finish. Using cloth/cotton wool/blending stumps moves the free graphite around and also helps to fill the tooth of the paper - it just does it quicker :)
MidnightLunaRose why do you waste your money to learn art? you learn art just by watching and practice.for me certificate means nothing if your arts are sucks. so for me having degree or master or whatever higher in art is just a certificate showing that a student that has successfully waste their money
Yup! Took a semester of acrylic painting my first year and was left to learn on my own. I learned to stretch a canvas and critique other’s artwork(which was horrible!). It was a huge waste of money.
Wow! You are truly incredible. You make it look so easy too! It’s like you are a makeup artist on paper. The way the video is made looked like you just absolutely brought him to life. You are my favorite artist on UA-cam. I did one of your eye tutorials tonight.. I’m really proud of how mine came out. I followed you step by step. Thanks so much! You are an inspiration!!
This video has a lot of great tips!!! I ended up making some of my skin tone on my portrait to dark, I didnt realize that I could use my shammy for this! Thank you so much for these videos!!!! ☺☺☺
Wow, u are amazing, just found your channel so new sub and u have inspired me to pick up my pencils again, I loved to sit and sketch, havn't done it for yrs,my son is 17 and my daughter is now 3, so I get a bit more me time, was wondering what I would do with that with it.. found my answer😘
This video is great. Very informative and helpful as are all of your other videos. Thanks for sharing your techniques. I do realistic pencil drawings and sell commissions, but there is always so much more to learn. Very helpful. Thanks
Hello Kirsty! Thank you for the tips! I have a question; I'm drawing a portrait where the hair is black. Shall I proceed to drawing the hair with a charcoal pencil in the darkest areas and mix it with a graphite pencil (for example a 4b or 5b) for the highlights or am I going to ruin the whole portrait? What do you recommend about the mixing between graphite and charcoal?
Tip: If your trying to make the charcoal powder and you don't have sand paper, just sharpen your charcoal pencil and get the pieces that come off of it! Just make sure you get the shavings out!
I was kinda right when I explained the complexity of sketching realistically, to a friend, that its sort of applying makeup! Well so far I used graphite and paper stubs because complete beginner!
First of all, I like your accent so much, Second, you are very helpful! Thank you graphite pencils really leaves line and my blending looks weird and not smooth
Omg this is really late and you probably already found a way, but you can use a knife and scrape the sticks. Or you can just buy pre made powder online.
I just now noticed that was Matt smith.....i think its him....i see a bowtie and his hair looks like the way Matt smiths is..XD And its weird becuase right now im drawing a realistic David Tennant.... But i love your drawings and how you teach them! :3 there great!
I've used both for realistic drawing, and I think it depends on a lot of different factors. Some advantages of charcoal over graphite are: wider value range of light to dark (particularly the darks, since charcoal can get waaaay darker than graphite), it never turns shiny (as graphite tends to do when you build heavy or burnished layers), and it's very easy to lay down so you're not as tempted to smoosh the tooth by pressing down hard. Some advantages of graphite: it's easier to work in layers (you can easily make layers of barely-visible hard-lead pencil work, before adding softer-lead pencil work), it's usually easier to erase completely (charcoal almost seems to stain the paper, sometimes, even if you don't press that hard), and it's easier to make light areas (charcoal just comes in very dark shades, unless you count conte crayons or "white charcoal," so you have to use a workaround method like blending or using brushes with powder anytime you want to make light marks). I think ultimately, it's up to you which one works better for you and your personal style, as well as your subject matter. I've seen master graphite artists and master charcoal artists alike make beautiful realistic drawings. For me, I think charcoal wins my heart because I hate it when graphite gets shiny--but it's more difficult for me to use, so I usually end up using graphite anyway, lol.
Your good at drawing skin whenever I draw skin it looks like someone rubbed there fingers across it (Edit) thanks for the tutorial it was so helpful I never thought I’d see an artist who would share what they have learnt. now I can draw skin

It's pretty sad how i learned a lot more on youtube than I ever did in art classes.
MidnightLunaRose so true .... I hate it at art classes they only give out all the works no techniques at all
MidnightLunaRose I took an art class for one year and I didn't understand anything :')

Rather than creating your own charcoal powder could you not just purchase some? I see Amazon sell this in jars. Which would you recommend?
Could you do a video on hair for graphite/charcoal???
Osam art

_Pigs can sniff out Truffles with their snouts._
what brushes do you use?
Your good at drawing skin whenever I draw skin it looks like someone rubbed there fingers across it (Edit) thanks for the tutorial it was so helpful I never thought I’d see an artist who would share what they have learnt. now I can draw skin
One day in the future...
Artists will use makeup brushes for realism drawings.
People will use charcoal pencils to draw eyebrows.
Hahahahaha
What do you do if you mess up and you trying to draw darker skin
"I do find that these [blending stumps] make it a bit dark."
Well, they are covered in black stuff...
good video
Nice lesson thank u madem please teech me teeth art so meny various
I use a brush to blend my pencil base layer but it is grainy up close. Frustrating me .
You need enough pigment on the paper to be able to cover the white of the paper
Is it just me, or does anyone else see an eye when she swirls the powder at 1:37 ish?
Oh no I lost my stick eraser and my normal eraser doesn’t have a sharp corner
Your word is great ,but I just can't perfect it.
thanks for the techniques
