  • A video model showing how to teach a step by step process to solve word problems. This video shows a simple way to solve word problems targeted mainly to middle school students, but it is also good for 4th graders, 5th graders, 6th graders, 7th graders, 8th graders, and 9th graders. It will even help as background skills for algebra. This system for solving word problems will show teachers how to teach students ways to apply their math skills in real world applications. This video can be used by teachers as a coaching video to model how to teach students how to solve word problems. Parents can also learn from this video to help their children ages 10 years through 14 years to solve word problems especially as homework. The system for solving word problems used in this video is called "solving word problems with a BUCK" this system helps teachers teach students how to simplify, organize, and solve word problems, after all "Life is a Word Problem" -- the lesson will model how to breakdown a word problem and make it easier to solve because it will not be confusing for the students. This video will show students how to remember an easy way to do the word problems making them less threatening, lowering anxiety and resistance to word problems. The strategies modeled in this video will help students prepare for the STAR testing and provide more success on the math portion of the CST and other standardized testing. This system is extremely helpful to struggling, low performing students due to the simplicity and easy to remember method. It will help English Language Learners understand how to solve word problems with the easy to understand method, building on and reinforcing academic language.

    Then word problems be like:
    If Billy has 3 cookies and then gives half to John, calculate the number of bananas that can fit in a toaster on Jupiter, if the wind is 12 MPH, in Eastern Russia.

      Well, we know that your average toaster have 2 slots for bread. So, it’ll be 2 bananas stuffed in a toaster on Jupiter.

      According to my calculations and the BUCK method just explained the answer would be 2 bananas 🍌. What we are trying to find out is the number of bananas that can fit in a toaster (common household appliance with 2 slots). Toasters are meant for 2 bread loaves but that is only a partial answer like the one for the first proportion problem. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system but only about 2.4 times that of the surface gravity on earth because it is mainly made up of “gases”. Assuming we are talking about your ordinary household banana sold in the grocery stores which is the cavendish variety and only weighs about 180.56g and we could “fit” or fill in the toasters (not someone (human) who proposes a toast) volume (amount of space that is enclosed within the container) is made up of stainless steel and has dimensions of 10”X8”X9” (includes no added features like auto shut off, cool to the touch, etc.) would fit approximately 10 bananas rounded up to the nearest 10th.
      This is why the answer to the t-shirt question is actually 1,512. Because 504X3=1,512

I understand they’ll give you formulas and such on certain word problems (which is not too bad) but almost all the time they never indicate (phrases that tell you) when your have to add or subtract. 3 TSHIRTS in 10 MINS! USE DIVISION FOR THIS! 60MINS IN 1HR! ASK YOUR SELF how many 10MINS CAN I GET OUT OF 1 HOUR? ANSWER 6 10MINS IN A HOUR! MULTIPLY 6X3TSHIRTS = 18 TSHIRTS per hour, then multiply 18Tshirt x12hrs = 216per day once you find the daily amount then multiply how many days in the week by how many TSHIRTS PER DAY 216TSHIRTS X 7DAYS= 1512

    I think you forgot that in every 10mins = 3tshirts.
    Formula:
    10mins = 3tshirts
    1 hour = 60mins / 10mins = 6 * 3shirts = 18 shirts
    12 hours = 720mins / 10mins = 72 * 3shirts = 216 shirts
    1week = 5040mins / 10mins = 504 * 3shirts = 1512 shirts
    anyway, great tutorial! i've learned a lot and i will use your method in solving word problem.

    Thank you. It was very useful. Who didn't know or wasn't one of these "oh, this is so hard, I can never do it" people at school? How did I solve the first problem? It's quite easy then: 12 hours per day x60 minutes x 7 = 5040 minutes or 84 hours per week. And then we have 3 t-shirts per 10 minutes, so we have 3x60/10=18 t-shirts per hour and that you multiply with the hours per week.
    Yepp, very helpful to cross out the information you don't need. 2nd problem I did it with this 100%=80, 80=? So 80x80/100=64. Yes, of course it is way easier to do it like you did, or one could even say: 20% is 1/5, therefore, 16 out of 80, and then we have 64. But I used the safe way.

    You could also do $80x0.80 since 80x1.00=80 and 20 percent discount is 0.20. Then 1.00-0.20=0.80. That’s why 80x0.80 is better. It gives you the answer a little faster.

    80÷5=16 then subtract 80 by that number
    80-16=64
    This works efficiently on precentage Word problems!!!! 👍👌Great video though!!!!!
