- “CBS This Morning” is kicking off a new series, "Pushing the Limits," where we profile seemingly ordinary people doing remarkable things. Katie Ledecky is called "the best swimmer on the planet." She started building her legacy at age 15, winning her first gold medal at the London Olympics. She's broken 10 world records, one of them, almost by accident. Norah O’Donnell spoke to Ledecky on how she sets -- and beats -- her personal bests.
She is so funny and awkward 😊😊😊when they said she was the best athlete in the world, she was like "uhhh thanks!" And just shrugged her shoulders! That's adorable lol her smile is the cutest thing ever

As a teen id swim the length of any pool i ever went to under water without taking a breath. used to be fast too. But my family was poor so i had to give up dreams and get a job.

She just loves what she does. That’s the secret to her success. She doesn’t compete. She is also humble. She just enjoys what she does and the medal comes by itself. It is a great philosophy. We have the tendency to be very competitive and forget enjoying what we do. Let’s enjoy more and compete less.

+William Gordy Exactly. You wouldn't know by this clip that she doesn't even rank in the top 20 in the world in the sprints. Even with her respectable speed at the 100 level, she would not final in either event at an Olympics or World Championships. That said, she is the best overall freestyle swimmer on the men's or women's side due to her range - 200 to 1500.

Janet Evans set the standard for distance swimming and then Katie came along and improved on it. Both are all time

3:53 Swimming should have height/reach cathegories like boxing does. So that only training and technique have an effect on winning (taking genetics out of the equation).
Most of the ppl in swimming are already tall, it wouldn’t be much of a change. Genetics don’t rly affect it which is kinda sad because short ppl have not as much of a chance

Not sure if CBS realizes that Mrs. Ledecky will not be swimming the 1500m Free in the 2016 because it isn't offered at the Olympics for woman's swimming.
Yes, and that is HORRIBLE!!! Why in the hell do they not have the women's 1500m when the do have the men's 1500m? Don't they realize by now that we women are not shrinking violets who need to be protected from endurance events? It's so frustrating! Sorry to sound so pissy; it's just disappointing. I would so much enjoy watching such a long distance swim. I'm an old, ancient, middle-aged long-distance open water swimmer, and I really love watching the Olympics and dreaming my Walter Mitty dreams.
The men don't have the 800m which the women do that's why there's no women's 1500m.

The journalist excludes 50 m and 100 m and then she says that Katie won every single race in a freestyle category. Is not that unfair and unprecise?

If that's true, then why don't freestyle competitors spend most of their event (not just the turns) underwater?

I think there's safety concerns with encouraging athletes to stay underwater too long. and probably it's not great for spectating lol

I actually feel sorry for any female swimmers competing during her "era" of swimming.
They basically ALL end up fighting for second place.
It would have to be frustrating to spend your life training and preparing - traveling - competing and simply qualifying to be next to her in a race. Instant handicap - by a LOT.

What people don’t understand bout swimming is that one person isn’t the best at every single event. Someone who is the fastest in the free sprints may not have a chance in the breast events. That doesn’t mean they’re not the best swimmer in the world, just not in that category.

I love Katie Ledecky, but she won't swim 7 events let alone win 7 medals. I'll eat my hat if she's on the 400 Medley Relay.
And, if they had a women's 1500m free (which they don't, even though they do have a men's 1500m free), she might snap that medal up too.
Weitzell, Manuel, Vollmer, Weir are all faster 100 freestylers than Ledecky. She will NOT swim the Medley Relay.
