Thanks for this! I'll be spending about six to twelve months in Thailand later on this year or early 2026. I'm looking around the $800-1.2k budget. I'm not trying to eat at the best restaurants or do all the crazy hobbies. Right now in the US I eat at places like Islands, BJ's, IHOP, Olive Garden, Outback, Jersey Mikes, In N out, Panda, Trader Joe's, and Sprouts.

Majority of people make 2k a month average in Europe and they make it work. Instead of paying 1k+ for a room in a shared house, you can get a whole condo in Thailand for as little as 300, with pool and gym included. If you can make the rest work for 1k a month in EU, you can definitely make it for 700 in Thailand. 1k a month will improve the lifestyle you have in the UK or any other expensive EU country if you're the average person.

To me after 9 years in Thailand, this is the most accurate video about budgets in Thailand. I hate vids sayin "u can or cant live on $1k/month", u can and people do, just understand the life u will live. You said everything perfectly to reflect my opinion as well.

correct I agree with the comments here, the better way to look at it for those thinking of moving to Thailand isn't so much I can live on X per month, it should be what is the life I can have on $X per month and is it enough. Thailand ( and the price varies from where you are located) isn't as cheap as it once was, but it is still offered exceptional value over western countries...

If you have $2000 USD/mo, you can have pretty much everything you need. Anything more, you start getting more of the things that you want.

to be honest though Jon, with he state of the west (UK and U.S but other places too) at the moment.. even 'existing' over in Thailand is better than suffering in the west... at least Thailand has better weather , nicer people, safer streets, no war... its about Quality of Life over what you can actually have.... as long as you are polite and respectful that you are a guest in another country it is very possible to have a nice life for a MUCH more reasonable amount of money than you may have in the west!!! $1000 a month in the west nowadays barely even covers the rent, at least out there you can have something that resembles a 'Life' for $1000!!! IF you can afford it, and you can ADAPT to Thailand (becuase it wont change for you!!!) then why the hell not!!..

1000 usd you be scrimping and saving every baht and you certainly wouldn’t be able to afford even half decent Medical insurance on that budget

I like your video as it gives a better picture than other videos on budget. Having said that, for a retired couple just add 10% on your budget $s in your video?

I really appreciate your approach here. And I learned a lot by watching. I have watched a couple of videos on the subject and I’m starting to get a picture. But I’m still not sure about the cost for health insurance for a man age 62-67.

Cheap room, moped and pot noodles is no way to live and it's certainly no way to retire.
Too many people winging it and they'll evetually end up on a flight home. They'll be broke, disappointed and in a worse financial position than when they left.

entirely depends on what you want to do. you aint gonna do that motorcycle loop every month. personally, I dont drink alcohol and prefer a healthy lifestyle. That also means I am not eating out a lot becaue most restaurant food is trash nutrition wise. I want less carbs, possibly no carbs and a ton of protein. I usually cook myself. I found great places to buy steaks and meat in general. I often order food delivery from keto restaurants or healthy food restaurants but that costs like 7 to 9 USD only. most of my hobbies are free or very cheap. my expenses for women are low because I know how to get them for cheap (hint: not in gogo bars, clubs or whatever you think). got a couple of students who need some support, if you know what I mean. 1500 USD is more than enough for me in Bangkok. My income is much higher though, because I did not expect my expenses to be so low.

I was living really comfortable with 2k a month in Bangkok thong lo area, trained Muay Thai everyday had food prepped for the week and would only splurge on the weekends, I’m not much of a drinker, most of the time I was just going to different areas in Bangkok because I’m a photographer so I would spend more just on transportation to these different neighborhoods

Spot on, and the key is, and you nailed it, Thailand allows you to pivot +/- spend. I can afford 4-5k + a month budget but dont really need to spend that, unless I decide on a big property, pool, etc. Fixed costs, lifestyle are key. Do need to keep in mind tho, how will that 2-3k a month look in 10 + years from now, what with inflation, etc..

One of the best cost of living vids I’ve seen on Thailand. The wife and I lived there in CM 5 yrs ago and at the time i was making good money and we saved a lot of money and lived on 2500 a month and wanted for nothing. What I’m seeing here in America is seniors that have been completely destroyed since the Covid BS and the Biden horrible leadership that are now living on the streets or in their cars. These people make at least 500 to 1500 on Social Security. I ask myself all the time why wouldn’t they choose to move to CM or some where else compatible and at least live a descent life with a roof over their head, good food and a shit load of less stress??!! Chiang Mai is a wonderful place, great people!! I miss it, beautiful place and no stress!

I’ve talked to my wife about this before because when she first graduated from college she was living on very little in Thailand every month, but she would not choose a budget that lean ever again by choice. I’m sure there are plenty of people able to live on much less than $500 a month. But that may involve the same things as people living on a tight budget like that in the US such as living with your parents.

Thanks for the video, If I have to live in Thailand forever in my early 50s now, at least $3K on monthly pension will be enough PLUS $100K of savings for emergency. I used to live in Pattaya for 6 months of 2023 and I budgeted that amount. Back in Cali working & planning to retire around 2026.

I`ve found that some of my friends and also people I watch on YT cherish these delusions about how cheap Thailand is. I don`t live in Thailand, but I visit Thailand often enough to know Thailand isn`t cheap at all. It`s cheaper than many places in the world, but not cheap. Yes, you can live cheaply in Thailand if you areThai and own a field of rice (therefore you don`t need to buy it), but not as a farang. All the people who are not aware of prices in Thailand (or they are, but for some reasons choose to lie about Thailand) and cherish this delusion of cheap Thailand in reality want BETTER VALUE for their money in Thailand than back home. I don`t believe anybody REALLY wants to live a poor Thai person`s life in Thailand.

I live like a pauper in Thailand simply cos its a better lifestyle, I could go home and sit in my freezing cold home for 6/7 months of the year and be miserable with the rain and cold. In Thailand I can sit outdoors 24 hours of the day if I please. The Thai weather is far better for ones mental health. You dont need much money to be content.

    • @lordjim3109
