I never knew that the Butterfinger commercials predated the main series! I've always been very curious about the Tracey Ullman era of the Simpsons since it seems like it only ever gets a passing mention these days. I never would have guessed that the show was already becoming a big deal even before it spun off into its own thing

The 90s Comedy Central logo was the best!! You unlocked some core memories for me with that one lol 😂

Nice video! I always thought there was a lot of mystery around the early days of the Simpsons during their time on the Tracey Ullman show. My dad used to watch the Tracey Ullman show when he lived in the US during the 1980s, but I myself did not know much about it. This video clears a lot of things up! You managed to cover this topic really well.

Now if some anonymous uploader put them all on the Internet Archive 🤔

great video tommy! i fancy myself a simpsons expert and this is the best video i've seen on the series' origin. i will admit i haven't watched the ullman show fully so i had no idea about the Dr. N!Godatu segments. the ullman shorts were released on "The Best of The Simpsons" vhs series released in the late 90s, which are typically higher quality than the Comedy Central rips.

I doubt he's telling the truth. All the clips he shows are from the few episodes of the show you can easily find on UA-cam.

I understand the show was revolutionary to a degree, but I think it should be off the air as it’s past its prime!

Just a thought: it would definitely help this vid in the algorithm if you changed the name to something like I Found The Lost Origins of the Simpsons, this is a great documentary you've made and it would be a shame if it didn't get the exposure it deserves but most people have never heard of Tracy Ullman, using "The Simpsons" in the title will def get it more views

Another great captivating video. The way I'd describe the presentation of these last two videos is a controlled clean coolness (all of those elements are present as early as the little intro). Looking at the simple one line description is surreal, no social media, no sponsor, just one sentence simply describing the video. In that way it sort of brings me back to the way old UA-cam videos often feel authorless, with their creators leaving no trace behind. Leaving people ten years in the future with nothing to go by except the work isolated in a vacuum... Anyways good video.

Interesting video! And well-made. I wish it was a bit more about The Tracey Ullman Show rather than the Simpsons though. 🙂
And I REALLY REALLY WISH there was even a hint here about how to obtain The Tracey Ullman Show myself. 😁

The bootleg Simpsons merch started early on but I'm pretty sure it was after they became a series and not during its run on the Ullman Show.
A couple shorts ran in movie theaters throughout the summer of 1989 attached to various 20th Century Fox movies. That's where the little title sequence at 19:16 comes from

I think it was Polly Platt who gave James L. Brooks that copy of Life In Hell! She’s Peter Bogdanovich’s ex wife, and did some incredible (under-appreciated) work in Hollywood. She’s also the reason Wes Anderson has a career, she helped make Bottle Rocket happen. What a legend.

There was a series of VHS box tape sets from the late 90s/early 2000s that had two episodes, with a Tracy ullman shorts in between. That in the reruns on Comedy Central is a kid as how I was able to see them all.

16:25 - Now i noticed that Bart, Lisa and Maggie don't have their bodies when the car ( camera ) is moving.
And at 16:30 Bart & Lisa's legs are missing.
I know it's the animation, but i only noticed now after so many years.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but there's another character from The Tracey Ullman show that appears in The Simpsons.
According to talking Simpsons at least, the performer who sings I could love a million girls with Homer in Homer's night out is a reoccurring character on Ullman. His name appears on the billboard when they are driving to the venue, I can't remember what it was offhand. I think his last name was "black"
The same character model appears recolored in who shot Mr Burns part 2, as the person who sings the song about how bad Mr burns is, (most likely not the same character)

Really great documentation work, I had no idea about the other Tracy Ulman shorts- the style is so unique. Are you planning on uploading the high-quality versions anywhere- the internet archive might be safest!
