The human digestive system is a complex and essential part of our body, responsible for breaking down the food we eat into nutrients, which the body uses for energy, growth, and cell repair.
It consists of a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus, along with other organs that help with digestion. Here’s a step-by-step look at the main parts and their functions:
1. Mouth
Teeth: Chew food into smaller pieces.
Salivary Glands: Produce saliva, which contains enzymes that begin breaking down carbohydrates.
Tongue: Helps in mixing food with saliva and pushing it towards the pharynx for swallowing.
2. Pharynx and Esophagus
Pharynx (Throat): A muscular tube that serves as a pathway for the movement of food from the mouth to the esophagus.
Esophagus: A long tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Peristalsis, a series of muscle contractions, moves the food down to the stomach.
3. Stomach
Gastric Juices: Produced by glands in the stomach lining, these contain enzymes and hydrochloric acid to break down proteins and kill bacteria.
Churning: The stomach muscles contract to mix food with gastric juices, turning it into a semi-liquid mixture called chyme.
4. Small Intestine
Duodenum: The first part of the small intestine, where most chemical digestion occurs. Bile from the liver and gallbladder, and pancreatic juice from the pancreas, are released here.
Jejunum and Ileum: These sections are primarily involved in the absorption of nutrients through the intestinal walls into the bloodstream.
5. Liver, Gallbladder, and Pancreas
Liver: Produces bile, which helps digest fats.
Gallbladder: Stores and concentrates bile, releasing it into the small intestine.
Pancreas: Produces digestive enzymes and bicarbonate, which neutralizes stomach acid in the small intestine.
6. Large Intestine (Colon)
Cecum: Receives chyme from the small intestine and starts the process of water and salt absorption.
Ascending, Transverse, Descending, and Sigmoid Colon: These sections further absorb water and electrolytes, compacting the waste into feces.
Rectum: Stores feces until they are ready to be expelled.
7. Anus
Anus: The final part of the digestive tract, where feces are expelled from the body through defecation.
Each part of the digestive system plays a critical role in ensuring that the food we eat is properly digested and that nutrients are absorbed efficiently. From chewing in the mouth to the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine and the expulsion of waste through the anus, this system is vital for maintaining overall health and well-being.

What is the role of renin in infants?
Rennin is secreted by the cells of stomach in inactive form as prorennin and then activated to Rennin by HCl. Rennin is produced only in infants. The enzyme helps in the curdling of the milk, which helps in the slow digestion and complete absorption of nutrient.
