I think enemies to lovers implies a certain level of equal power. like it's a hero and a villain or a similar situation. like they hated each other before they're ever put into a situation where they're forced together. if they're enemies BECAUSE one of them was kidnapped by the other, I don't think it really counts.

I have to disagree, enemies are still enemies and I actually like enemies to lovers with power dynamics included. Obviously I am speaking about a fiction trope but I do think because power imbalance is such a common kink, more hard-core enemies to lovers stories, while not for everyone do have their place.
Like, my flavour of enemies to lovers is shipping a tragic rebel hero with the evil overlord of their setting

    • @k4nd1incyb3rsp4c3
      @k4nd1incyb3rsp4c3 Рік тому +100

@@lorieslori8051 I never said power dynamics were bad or anything like that, and yeah they can be included in enemies to lovers, but I guess what I really meant is they have their own motives or morals that clash, and that's what makes them enemies. I think by equal power I meant they were opposing forces towards opposite goals, not that they were literally equally as powerful as each other. Which is why I think if it's the situation from the video where an unsuspecting girl gets kidnapped and that's why she hates her "enemy" then I don't really feel like it counts. Her goal before that didn't clash with his goal, which is what I feel makes it count as enemies to lovers. You could easily fix this to make it fit the trope, like say her goal is to improve the local library, but his goal is to close the library down, so they hate each other, THEN he kidnaps her, I feel like this story fits better. But it is just my opinion, idk.

Anyone with an actual choking kink knows that there's a specific way to hold someone's neck so they can still breathe and aren't being hurt. Just goes to show that the people who write shit like this know absolutely nothing about kink and have never interacted with the community in any capacity. Safety and boundaries are like the first things that get brought up there. I'm guessing these people (authors?) think it's somehow sexier to ignore safety and concent but like... that's just abuse now. And mind you, noncon is a kink too, but that particular one probably has the most "we don't condone x in real life" disclaimers out of every community I've seen. I think these people just straight up don't know how to write kink.

Ehhhh, it predates that series by some time. You read old Harlequin romance novels and those things can get about as twisted but lack the overt "BDSM" framing. That said, the semantic shift associated with mainstreaming the language of BDSM without embracing the actual ethos and understanding of consent and power dynamics is… troubling, given how it blurs the line between a pure fantasy of something which would objectively be horrible in reality and, y'know, something real which requires a lot of trust, communication and consideration.

@@zylieacaria4601 Respectfully, I disagree. As a writer myself, I used to do this, but the more men I hung around and talked with and listened to, I realized how different men behave and think than women. Men are problem solvers and doers, they don't like to sit around with their feelings for the most part. They love physical touch but have a hard time waking for it. Men want peace and for the most part don't like drama and avoid it. Men show affection through jokes and actions rather than words, they keep their pain to themselves and it's a special moment when they open up. This took a lot of listening and having guys read my stuff to find out. It's still difficult for me, a woman, to write a man as I don't have their lived experience, but it's become easier, and now I have more fun writing men than I do women.

yeah definitely. when it comes to trauma, mental health and/or addictions, it's a more common thing (more than some people think) to try making those things "normal" to you, romanticize it, or sexualize those things for the sake of coping. it's yeah it's pretty sad. Honestly i totally relate to those people to some extent, since when i was younger it was more common for me to glorify my struggles. those coping mechanisms aren't really healthy, though a lot of unhealthy coping mechanisms are normalized when it comes to certain online or irl spaces.
Though i mean, i also kind of think that SA fantasies & rap3 fantasies & cnc kink (just throwing out here since i mean, cnc is basically you roleplaying non consensual actions that you fantasize about) don't always have to be a result of any trauma rooting from noncon experiences. It can be a combination of trauma and internalizing standards considered normal in society in a different way, or *just* simply the second thing. An example is rough sex, hitting, violent actions being normal in porn, so people internalize this standard and their brain takes it far enough to get rap3 fantasies, since rap3 is associated with violence and rough intercourse. also we can't deny it's pretty common to see porn stuff with questionable consent or no consent at all, so being exposed to that -- especially at a young age -- can influence you.
another example is love interests (commonly men) in media disrespecting another character's (usually women) boundaries and its portrayed as something hot, respectable or good (especially good for the men's masculinity!), and people's brain just internalize those things and... well you know. there's also been some cases of women growing up with typical beliefs (ones rooted in religion) about sex being shameful and/or women acting sexual is shameful, and basically internalize that shame and, well you know. and i guess it's reasonable to say those fantasies can be rooted in witnessing misogyny in media, since some of the reasons i've just listed was objectification of women (I'd say it makes sense, since rap3 involves objectification)
i agree that it doesn't really make it any less gross and off-putting. internalization, being influenced, having trauma, and being conditioned to certain things can give you tons of different results depending on the person. it just happens that some of those results can be, not that great, or unhealthy and simply sad/worrying.

I've fantasized about the worst things you can think of. I think where there's an actual issue - aside from quality here - is that the Romance genre (and corn as well) became intertwined with violence to a point where non-con and dubious con are just part of the deal. When something is put everywhere, it becomes the thruth. None of this shit was ever meant to be the truth. It was meant to be a fantasy. It should be called fantasized abuse. That way things are called what they are and the line is less blurred between what can be a fun fantasy vs what's meant to be realistic or emulated. (Also, why those things are fun as fantasy is not that they would be fun for real as much as you don't have to take the bad. Like, in a fantasy, I can decide someone is saying no because they're shy and enjoyed themselves the whole time. Or that as much as they are begging and crying, magically, after it's done, they're okay. And it works because it's a fantasy. IRL, even when something is physically pleasant, it will traumatize you to have your consent violated. And I cannot just rape people and decide they're okay. For a similar reason, when I was younger, I used to fantasize about being abused because I was new to adulthood and felt overwhelm. So imagining someone controlling me was cathartic. Had anything actually happened I would probably be traumatized.

I'm personally not concerned about readers of adult-only fiction thinking rape is great because they read it in a romance book, but I do think it's important for the conversations around consent, abuse, boundaries, etc. to be even more prevalent than dark romance and for constructive criticism of the genre to be a thing just in case younger/less educated readers do get skewed ideas about IRL relationships.
I would also love it if there was a different name for dark "romance." Right now, censorship is a big issue there. The term "dark romance" is kind of a trojan horse so authors can make a living off of these books and help readers who want dark fantasies find them in the format they prefer (Kindle Unlimited, e-books, etc.).
Like with sex work, I think not allowing books featuring dark fantasies on major retailers causes more problems than they fix.

There are twisted depictions and abusive plays on typical romantic relationship stuff, but people go crazy at the idea of romance so they choose to ignore the abuse. It's also really odd because it feels like they just want Killing Stalking to be less dark than it is by ignoring all the dark parts. I highly doubt that this is because they want KS to be less dark, the author had put hints in the story that the main character could survive and recover to make the ending ambiguous and when she confirmed in her twitter that the fate of the main character is up to interpretation, she got hated on by these people because they wanted the main character to "unalive" (i cant put the real word here) himself so he could be with his ab8ser in death. So I'll start off by saying that BookTok is, indeed, a cesspool filled with recommendations for over-the-top, terribly written books that I personally find repulsive as romances. I also think some of them would be better suited to a category like "erotic thriller" or "erotic horror." Part of the problem is censorship. "Dark romance" is a safe little code word for books full of stuff Amazon doesn't allow, so authors and readers hide under romance to get their fix.
But in case you're concerned, dark romance readers know that what's going on isn't okay IRL. They know it's rape. The nonconsent is the kink. Dark romance is very different from BDSM romance even if it contains sexual acts common in BDSM, like choking, spanking, bondage, etc. Totally fair to criticize Fifty Shades, which was supposed to be a BDSM romance, but, again, in dark romance, the nonconsent and breaking of boundaries is the kink.
Also, if you think breeding kink is about monogamy and starting a nuclear family, you know nothing about breeding kink, LMAO! A lot of dark romance readers want the monogamy and fidelity, but breeding as a kink extends waaaay beyond romance. Also also, I'd say breeding kink is probably more commonly tied to nonconsent than to enthusiastic consent. Part of the fantasy often has to do with throwing away all reason and decency and just letting impulses drive you. Rape kink and breeding kink are like chocolate and freaking peanut butter, so saying it's no longer a breeding kink because there's nonconsent makes no sense.
And speaking of breeding... yeah, lactation kink is a thing. And yeah, some men have it, so I wouldn't call it an unrealistic depiction of a man. I've never given birth, so I can't speak to whether or not women feel sexual arousal however long after giving birth that was, but I wouldn't think it's that rare?
And I suppose you could argue that women shouldn't get turned on by dark fantasies (though such insinuations are pointless), but the research says these are common fantasies (as you can tell by the wild popularity of these books) that don't seem to translate to women wanting abusive relationships or anything. Just a safe way to explore the dark corners of one's sexual and "romantic" imagination. I can see why someone who doesn't have a dark imagination would think it's unhealthy, though.
Also, I don't know why either sex gets so hung up on the other not being able to write women/men. Men writing fantasies for men don't give AF about writing realistic women. That's not what their readers want. Ditto for women writing men. These are escapist fantasies.

I've gone to the gynaecologist a few times before and on none of those occasions did i feel the slightest hint of arousal, because as you said, there is nothing remotely sexy about having to watch a complete stranger probe your genitals.
Now I do sometimes like to fantasize about it being a sexy situation, dark "romance" style, but that's something I would never write into any of my actual books. I mostly keep it to myself and maybe occasionally fanfiction sites, but I think there's an important distinction to be made between finding morally questionable hypothetical situations arousing and finding any sort of genuine romance in them.
I think as long as the difference between FANTASY and genuine desire for it to happen in real life is made clear, we should let people explore these kinds of scenarios without being so harsh on them. I don't have tiktok so I have no idea to which extent these women are glorifying abuse and to which extent they are just having fun with the things they like to think about while blasting rope, but great video nevertheless! It's always fun to watch you complain about what people on tiktok are doing, that way I spare myself from actually having to download it

Who needs romance books when you have play by post DND servers?
You’d be surprised at how well two people who share strictly platonic feelings with each other romance rp their characters. It’s like watching a play; reading a book and seeing Lady Whistledown esque town gossip unfold in real time and it’s so much more thrilling than any romance book on this earth.

In case you're concerned, dark romance readers know that what's going on isn't okay Irl. They know it's r*pe. The nonconsent is the kink. Dark romance is different from BDSM romance even if it contains things that are common in BDSM. In dark romance, the nonconsent and breaking of boundaries is the kink.
Many people have forced s*x and other dark fantasies but would never want anything of the sort to happen to them in real life. I suppose you could argue that women shouldn't get turned on by dark fantasies (although such insinuations are pointless) but the research says that these are common fantasies that don't seem to translate to women wanting abusive relationships irl or anything. Just a safe way to explore the dark corners of one's s*xual and romantic imagination. I can see why someone who doesn't have a dark imagination would think it's unhealthy, thoughIn case you're concerned, dark romance readers know that what's going on isn't okay Irl. @@LuckerStomp According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway because bees don't care what humans think is impossible. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Ooh, black and yellow! Let's shake it up a little. Barry! Breakfast is ready! Coming! Hang on a second. Hello? - Barry? - Adam? - Can you believe this is happening? - I can't. I'll pick you up. Looking sharp. Use the stairs. Your father paid good money for those. Sorry. I'm excited. Here's the graduate. We're very proud of you, son. A perfect report card, all B's. Very proud. Ma! I got a thing going here. - You got lint on your fuzz. - Ow! That's me! - Wave to us! We'll be in row 118,000. - Bye! Barry, I told you, stop flying in the house! - Hey, Adam. - Hey, Barry. - Is that fuzz gel? - A little. Special day, graduation. Never thought I'd make it. Three days grade school, three days high school. Those were awkward. Three days college. I'm glad I took a day and hitchhiked around the hive. You did come back different. - Hi, Barry. - Artie, growing a mustache? Looks good. - Hear about Frankie? - Yeah. - You going to the funeral? - No, I'm not going. Everybody knows, sting someone, you die. Don't waste it on a squirrel. Such a hothead. I guess he could have just gotten out of the way. I love this incorporating an amusement park into our day. Welcome to Honex, a division of Honesco and a part of the Hexagon Group. This is it! Wow. Wow. We know that you, as a bee, have worked your whole life to get to the point where you can work for your whole life. Honey begins when our valiant Pollen Jocks bring the nectar to the hive. Our top-secret formula is automatically color-corrected, scent-adjusted and bubble-contoured into this soothing sweet syrup with its distinctive golden glow you know as... Honey! - That girl was hot. - She's my cousin! - She is? - Yes, we're all cousins. - Right. You're right. - At Honex, we constantly strive to improve every aspect of bee existence. These bees are stress-testing a new helmet technology. - What do you think he makes? - Not enough. Here we have our latest advancement, the Krelman. - What does that do? - Catches that little strand of honey that hangs after you pour it. Saves us millions. Can anyone work on the Krelman? Of course. Most bee jobs are small ones. But bees know that every small job, if it's done well, means a lot. But choose carefully because you'll stay in the job you pick for the rest of your life. The same job the rest of your life? I didn't know that. What's the difference? You'll be happy to know that bees, as a species, haven't had one day off in 27 million years. So you'll just work us to death? We'll sure try. Wow! That blew my mind! "What's the difference?" How can you say that? One job forever? That's an insane choice to have to make. I'm relieved. Now we only have to make one decision in life. But, Adam, how could they never have told us that? Why would you question anything? We're bees. We're the most perfectly functioning society on Earth. You ever think maybe things work a little too well here? Like what? Give me one example. I don't know. But you know what I'm talking about. Please clear the gate. Royal Nectar Force on approach. Wait a second. Check it out. - Hey, those are Pollen Jocks! - Wow. I've never seen them this close. They know what it's like outside the hive. Yeah, but some don't come back. - Hey, Jocks! - Hi, Jocks! You guys did great! You're monsters! You're sky freaks! I love it! I love it! - I wonder where they were. - I don't know. Their day's not planned. Outside the hive, flying who knows where, doing who knows what. You can't just decide to be a Pollen Jock. You have to be bred for that. Right. Look. That's more pollen than you and I will see in a lifetime. It's just a status symbol. Bees make too much of it. Perhaps. Unless you're wearing it and the ladies see you wearing it.

I read lot of romance books made by women and for women; and by far in my experiences women are worse in writing men than otherwise... Like in many of these the guys are horrible people, or toys for the girl to play with, they don't have a life of their own besides just being there for the girl, their past and struggles are not explored, and even the way their sexuality is portrayed is quite disgusting; with being either p3d0s, r4p1sts, etc, etc. And the narrative almost NEVER calls that out, at least when guys make these books all the characters are bad written and it often times portrays their actions as questionable and or even wrong, but when it is otherwise it is for whatever reason glamorized. Also, women tend to like to make men suffer in their narratives too, like killing their own daughters or losing a spouse because of immortality yada yada; not saying that this doesn't happen with women, but as a person that has read a LOT of books written by women and some by men, I gotta say the portrayal of women in the mens side is more romanticized, cherished, and even implies that there are more things that meets the eye, and all the characters are trimendisional or a big majority of them, at least (talking about writers like Poe and Machado de Assis, Shakeaspere, these guys, per example), while in women cases the men is either crap, or a really nice guy that you can actually want to sucede, going to extremes like books like Jane Austen per example were the characters all have their own things going own and there are good and bad people, again, tridimensional characters, and books like Somebody Possessed my Body, where she ends up (MC) with her brothers and father (adoptive, but still), if you get what I mean... I am not saying that writing something bad or good as anything to do with gender, but people, mostly women tend to pretend or ignore that their writing isn't better than men in any regards and sometimes it can be even worse if we analyse it as a whole with things like Captain Marvel or She Hulk per example; in my opinion what defines good writing is just if a person writes good or bad, simple as that. I am so sick of this joke; at least if people are gonna make fun of men writing women, they should talk about how horribly men are written, especially in romances (modern 2000-20's) by women; like seriously guys look it up, it's TERRIBLE, like SUPER GROSS! Great video, explore more of the women writing men side, please.

Knowing about books like these make me concerned for a story I’m going to try to write sometime down the line, and what I really mean by that is that I’m scared possible readers might like the AWFUL protagonist I have planned.
Basically, he’s a 19YO king who’s deeply obsessed with his 16YO sister, and he makes a contract with a demon to try and make her fall in love with him.
She has no idea what’s going on, and he’s just forcing her to spend time with him after doing some pretty bad things.
The demon he makes the deal with is also very concerned and hates everything.
