When I was nine years old, my grandmother took me on a three week trip to Europe. Remember the 60's? Our first stop was Amsterdam, and one of the first items on our itinerary was a visit to The Riijksmuseum to see The Nightwatch. It was quite large, that's what I remember, but at that age I didn't truly appreciate the moment. Looking back now I am glad I had the experience, thanks for the memory.

"Naked people tangled up in sheets..." Thanks, Simon. I'll never be allowed in a museum or gallery again because as soon as I see a piece of art depicting that very thing, I'll burst into raucous laughter and be escorted out of the building for disturbing the peace. 🤣
Rembrandt and Vermeer my two favorite Dutch Masters. I've had two reproductions done and given as gifts. I watch every on them here and elsewhere. Well done. 🎨
Simon, your videos, across all your channels, are some of the best researched, most compelling viewing out there on any platform. When i eventually have children, i'm not sending them to school, I'm making them watch your content from dawn til dusk! Thank you so much!
We need more biographies on artists and especially composers which I’ve noticed is the one area particularly lacking on an otherwise wonderfully eclectic channel.
As an artist and future curator, I applaud for finally telling a more accurate account then the story about the Night Watch ruining his career, as every art teacher I had told this story. It is hard to correct it in our minds. We can compare it to once believing the story of George Washington cutting down a cherry tree. But it was really the invention of one of his biographers. We can easily believe the sensational lie than the boring truth.
The point of _The Painter in His Studio_ is the fact that he stands and observes his work-in-progress from a distance, when most painters sat at the easel. Notice the wear on the rung of the easel, the result of decades feet resting on it.
I live in Omaha. We have a painting that was confirmed as a Rembrandt about 10 years ago and subsequently restored. This video has inspired me to go see it.
2 Dutch Grandmasters down 1 to go ! van Rhijn & van Gogh are off course truly exeptional , Hieronymus Bosch 1450-1516 is everything beyond immagination . A Bosch Biographic would be great ✌ ☝Thanks for all the great content ,its amazing 🙌🖕💪 1. Jheronimus Bosch - the Garden of the Eartly Delights 2. Vincent van Gogh 👂 Starry Nights/Sunflowers 3. Rembrandt van Rhijn 🤷♂️ the Nightwatch
Huge fan of Rembrandt. Saw the Night Watch and there was a huge crowd around it. People were sitting on the floor looking at it. To me though The Jewish Bride was what stopped me in my tracks. No reproduction can do it justice.
"Buckle up because today's episode is about to get a touch Shakespearean." *Instantly references the work of Geoffrey Chaucer a completely different writer.* 10/10, would history again.
Great video! Rembrandt is my grandmother's favorite artist! As usual, I'm here to request a video on Ip Man, the martial arts mentor to the late, great Bruce Lee. Four over the top action movies just dim in comparison to the Biographic depth of character. I've long waited for this Biographic, and am excited to eventually see it. Thank you in advance! -A Loyal Subscriber
When my ex-wife in 1996 arranged a tour of Europe based on artworks I went along with it because Europe. I recall seeing his works and being very impressed, but for some reason, I can now recall Impressionists' more strongly. However, off-topic, Botticelli's Venus actually brought tears to my eyes. p.s. Velasquez also impressed me.
So a, serious Biographics video about the blazing legend Danny Salter. From starting a dating agency on his trusty C64 to writing for serious business channels to ending up in a basement with Sam writing on a typewriter, about conspiracy theories and the dumbest criminals
Wait, Lieutenant Riker? What? The Thomas W. Riker clone caused by a transporter whoopsiedoodle? He was never 2nd in command, that was Commander William T. Riker, you ought to know this as an alleged trekkie Simon!!! :P

Past American presidents, British prime ministers, monarchs and Roman emperors would be good as well.
Have you considered doing a vid on Srinivasa Ramanujan? Clever bloke, and even G H Hardy apparently said that he had "never met his equal, and can compare him only with Euler or Jacobi". Wow!
Please do an episode on Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus. An amazing Roman emperors who would relinquish his power to take care of his family and farm not once but twice. Continue being awesome ❤️
It was known that if you were bankrupt but had a trade eg, carpenter, painter etc, you were allowed to keep your tools to keep up with payment. You can still argue this case going to court I believe.
It is interesting that people would call it unfinished, i figure he left the unimportant parts with less detail to draw less attention to them. Sort of like a blurry background in photos.

It used to be bigger actually, it got cut up at some point in history.
Umm congratulations?
You already know it’s Simon with his army of videos when you get 3, 4, 5+ notifications from UA-cam.
Honestly.
never click the bell icon.
It's a pain, isn't it? I watch 1/10 of them and I'm still exhausted.

"Naked people tangled up in sheets..." Thanks, Simon. I'll never be allowed in a museum or gallery again because as soon as I see a piece of art depicting that very thing, I'll burst into raucous laughter and be escorted out of the building for disturbing the peace. 🤣
how often do you actually go to museums? just do it . who cares
Rembrandt and Vermeer my two favorite Dutch Masters. I've had two reproductions done and given as gifts. I watch every on them here and elsewhere. Well done. 🎨

The rijksmuseum very nice. Dutch is not easy for an english😀man
I vote Korngold.
‘History isn’t brown and grimy’.
My two favourite UA-camrs - you and Julian Baumgartner - agree there, indeed. ❤️
Rembrandt and Holbein are my favorites of Northern Renaissance and Dutch Baroque. They both did a lovely job at capturing light and faces.
I have been waiting for this since the Dutch secceded from the Spanish Empire!

Hello...Rachel how are you?
Suggestions:
Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Voltaire
Henri de Turenne
Great Conde
Finally some dutch historical characters
I like how you can easily spot other blazers on his more formal channels.
For anyone on the fence: Yes, you want to watch Business Blaze.
But beware. No new Blaze for 2 days in a row and you'll get Blazing withdrawals.
He’s a tad unhinged there.
@@Urban_Piggy understatement 🤣
Here I was waiting/ hoping for Simon to stumble on "De Nachtwacht" and he didnt not even try. Hahaa :)
And neither did you
The night watch. Simple.
So he did try?
And you diddnt not do did diddnt
He stumbled on "Rijn" xD
We need a video on Laurel and Hardy. One of the best comedy duos
The point of _The Painter in His Studio_ is the fact that he stands and observes his work-in-progress from a distance, when most painters sat at the easel. Notice the wear on the rung of the easel, the result of decades feet resting on it.

Simon: I'm going to call this piece 'The Night Watch'.
Jon Snow: 😨*Flashbacks INTENSIFIES😰
Simon be like : wtf is a Night Watch 😂
Someone needs to paint, in the style of Remrandt, the Pulp Fiction scene where Vincent opens the briefcase.
Are we happy Vincent?
Vincent?
Yeah we're happy.
You! Flock o Seagulls...
@@blueberrypirate3601 even though I have no idea what a Hawaiian burger is, and even though I am a vegetarian, I still really want a Hawaiian burger.
I think a painting in the style of Van Gogh would be better.
Do one on Pablo Picasso!!!
Speaking of brilliant yet utterly dysfunctional geniuses of art, I don't know if Biographics has done Caravaggio?
"looked like an early magic the gathering card" damn i spat my coffee and wheezing while laughing
Simon should start another channel explaining classical paintings.
I live in Omaha. We have a painting that was confirmed as a Rembrandt about 10 years ago and subsequently restored. This video has inspired me to go see it.
If we’re on an artist binge, might I suggest a video over Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec?

I would love Caravaggio to get the Biographics treatment.. .
You always know a Simon Whistler Biographics video. They are funny, witty and enjoyable with Simon's signature charisma coming through.
Don’t forget they have some great scriptwriters.
Huge fan of Rembrandt. Saw the Night Watch and there was a huge crowd around it. People were sitting on the floor looking at it. To me though The Jewish Bride was what stopped me in my tracks. No reproduction can do it justice.

Rembrandt is one of the top 3 painters of the Northern Baroque. The others 2 are Rubens and Van Dyck.
I forgot about Frans Hals
My favorite artist.
Any chance you'd ever do a biographic on Caravaggio?
Fun fact Terry Pratceyt used this painting on his book night watch
"An excuse for society men to escape into the woods with their mates."
In America, we call them threepers.
Any fans of that little gem from the 90s "Incognito "? Love that film.

17:30 Damn, I 've heard of art evoking emotional responses but making a beholder flying into a rage and attack it with a knife, really? WTF?
Possibly one of the more intelligent, insightful, and nuanced episodes. And you cats are always on top of your game!
King Crimson's "The Night Watch" is inspired by the Rembrandt painting. Beautiful song.
That first painting is dope though

It would be interesting to see a Biographics on *Giuseppe Arcimboldo* . :)
difficult to understand the size of the night watch size... then don't show it in a tiny frame? @11:18
At a later period the owners wanted to fit the Nightwatch between two doors so that's why bits on the side were cut off.
I saw the night watch at the Rijksmuseum two years ago its huge.
And it used to be even bigger.

I quite think drawings of lions with sideburns exude a certain desirable yet rebellious character.
Great video!
Weird seeing this after I just watched that Art Heist Doc on Netflix in which Rembrandt paintings were stolen from Boston.
Literally same. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me for a second
I feel like Rembrandt when I too buy katanas and precious stones even though I should not spend my money so frivolously.
The ad here for business Blaze was way to tame lmao
Miss your podcasts Simon

Simon, can we have an extended one on Duke of Edinburgh?
