When I was nine years old, my grandmother took me on a three week trip to Europe. Remember the 60's? Our first stop was Amsterdam, and one of the first items on our itinerary was a visit to The Riijksmuseum to see The Nightwatch. It was quite large, that's what I remember, but at that age I didn't truly appreciate the moment. Looking back now I am glad I had the experience, thanks for the memory.
It used to be bigger actually, it got cut up at some point in history.
Umm congratulations?
You already know it’s Simon with his army of videos when you get 3, 4, 5+ notifications from UA-cam.
Honestly.
never click the bell icon.
It's a pain, isn't it? I watch 1/10 of them and I'm still exhausted.
"Simon Says. . . . . . . SEX!!!"
The absolute master. His utter control of light and shadow is astounding
"Naked people tangled up in sheets..." Thanks, Simon. I'll never be allowed in a museum or gallery again because as soon as I see a piece of art depicting that very thing, I'll burst into raucous laughter and be escorted out of the building for disturbing the peace. 🤣
how often do you actually go to museums? just do it . who cares

Thank You Sir
Rembrandt and Vermeer my two favorite Dutch Masters. I've had two reproductions done and given as gifts. I watch every on them here and elsewhere. Well done. 🎨
‘History isn’t brown and grimy’.
My two favourite UA-camrs - you and Julian Baumgartner - agree there, indeed. ❤️
We need more biographies on artists and especially composers which I’ve noticed is the one area particularly lacking on an otherwise wonderfully eclectic channel.
The rijksmuseum very nice. Dutch is not easy for an english😀man
I vote Korngold.
Rembrandt and Holbein are my favorites of Northern Renaissance and Dutch Baroque. They both did a lovely job at capturing light and faces.
Simon, your videos, across all your channels, are some of the best researched, most compelling viewing out there on any platform. When i eventually have children, i'm not sending them to school, I'm making them watch your content from dawn til dusk! Thank you so much!
As an artist and future curator, I applaud for finally telling a more accurate account then the story about the Night Watch ruining his career, as every art teacher I had told this story. It is hard to correct it in our minds. We can compare it to once believing the story of George Washington cutting down a cherry tree. But it was really the invention of one of his biographers. We can easily believe the sensational lie than the boring truth.
Hello...Rachel how are you?
Suggestions:
Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Voltaire
Henri de Turenne
Great Conde
Finally some dutch historical characters
I have been waiting for this since the Dutch secceded from the Spanish Empire!
Great biography, thank you for this excellent work.
Here I was waiting/ hoping for Simon to stumble on "De Nachtwacht" and he didnt not even try. Hahaa :)
And neither did you
The night watch. Simple.
So he did try?
And you diddnt not do did diddnt
He stumbled on "Rijn" xD
11:40
Simon: I'm going to call this piece 'The Night Watch'.
Jon Snow: 😨*Flashbacks INTENSIFIES😰
Simon be like : wtf is a Night Watch 😂
The point of _The Painter in His Studio_ is the fact that he stands and observes his work-in-progress from a distance, when most painters sat at the easel. Notice the wear on the rung of the easel, the result of decades feet resting on it.
I like how you can easily spot other blazers on his more formal channels.
Great video!
We need a video on Laurel and Hardy. One of the best comedy duos
Great video! Rembrandt is my grandmother's favorite artist! As usual, I'm here to request a video on Ip Man, the martial arts mentor to the late, great Bruce Lee. Four over the top action movies just dim in comparison to the Biographic depth of character. I've long waited for this Biographic, and am excited to eventually see it. Thank you in advance! -A Loyal Subscriber
Excellent! More artists please!
You always know a Simon Whistler Biographics video. They are funny, witty and enjoyable with Simon's signature charisma coming through.
Don’t forget they have some great scriptwriters.
Possibly one of the more intelligent, insightful, and nuanced episodes. And you cats are always on top of your game!
If we’re on an artist binge, might I suggest a video over Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec?
A long time coming! :-)
Someone needs to paint, in the style of Remrandt, the Pulp Fiction scene where Vincent opens the briefcase.
Are we happy Vincent?
Vincent?
Yeah we're happy.
You! Flock o Seagulls...
@@blueberrypirate3601 even though I have no idea what a Hawaiian burger is, and even though I am a vegetarian, I still really want a Hawaiian burger.
I think a painting in the style of Van Gogh would be better.
Simon man.....you gotta tell me where you are gettin' these dank shirts my dude. Love this channel. My favorite.
Simon should start another channel explaining classical paintings.
Nice Video. Well done! I'd like to see one done about William Blake. He's one of my all time favourite artists. Cheers! :)
2 Dutch Grandmasters down 1 to go ! van Rhijn & van Gogh are off course truly exeptional , Hieronymus Bosch 1450-1516 is everything beyond immagination . A Bosch Biographic would be great ✌ ☝Thanks for all the great content ,its amazing 🙌🖕💪
1. Jheronimus Bosch - the Garden of the Eartly Delights
2. Vincent van Gogh 👂 Starry Nights/Sunflowers
3. Rembrandt van Rhijn 🤷♂️ the Nightwatch
"looked like an early magic the gathering card" damn i spat my coffee and wheezing while laughing
Speaking of brilliant yet utterly dysfunctional geniuses of art, I don't know if Biographics has done Caravaggio?
My favorite artist.
SMASHED LIKE!!!
Memo: WTH is Business Blaze??? Never heard of it.
I absolutely love how your describe art. Perhaps another idea for channel.
"An excuse for society men to escape into the woods with their mates."
In America, we call them threepers.
Excellent preaentation wiht accurate histoography
Definitely need a video on John Constable!
And Samuel Johnson Dictionary Man
It would be interesting to see a Biographics on *Giuseppe Arcimboldo* . :)
King Crimson's "The Night Watch" is inspired by the Rembrandt painting. Beautiful song.
Any fans of that little gem from the 90s "Incognito "? Love that film.
One day I'd love to see Simon make a Bio/Geographics video in his Business Blaze style and vice versa.
So a, serious Biographics video about the blazing legend Danny Salter. From starting a dating agency on his trusty C64 to writing for serious business channels to ending up in a basement with Sam writing on a typewriter, about conspiracy theories and the dumbest criminals
Fun fact Terry Pratceyt used this painting on his book night watch
That first painting is dope though
I saw the night watch at the Rijksmuseum two years ago its huge.
And it used to be even bigger.
Can you do a video on Allan Dulles, director of the CIA?
Rembrandt is one of the top 3 painters of the Northern Baroque. The others 2 are Rubens and Van Dyck.
I forgot about Frans Hals
Please do Goya next! And Edward Hopper! :)
When my ex-wife in 1996 arranged a tour of Europe based on artworks I went along with it because Europe. I recall seeing his works and being very impressed, but for some reason, I can now recall Impressionists' more strongly.
However, off-topic, Botticelli's Venus actually brought tears to my eyes.
p.s. Velasquez also impressed me.
17:30 Damn, I 've heard of art evoking emotional responses but making a beholder flying into a rage and attack it with a knife, really? WTF?
"Buckle up because today's episode is about to get a touch Shakespearean."
*Instantly references the work of Geoffrey Chaucer a completely different writer.*
10/10, would history again.
I wanted this!
Miss your podcasts Simon
Honor and Respect
The ad here for business Blaze was way to tame lmao
Huge fan of Rembrandt. Saw the Night Watch and there was a huge crowd around it. People were sitting on the floor looking at it. To me though The Jewish Bride was what stopped me in my tracks. No reproduction can do it justice.
Weird seeing this after I just watched that Art Heist Doc on Netflix in which Rembrandt paintings were stolen from Boston.
Literally same. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me for a second
“An early Magic the Gathering card.” 🤣🤣🤣 Which artist, Simon? Pray tell!
The first riker maneuver! I wonder if he stands over chairs and everything possible
Hi Simon...I was hoping you could do a video on George Brydges Rodney, 1st Baron Rodney
Please do an episode on Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus. An amazing Roman emperors who would relinquish his power to take care of his family and farm not once but twice. Continue being awesome ❤️
At a later period the owners wanted to fit the Nightwatch between two doors so that's why bits on the side were cut off.
Wait, Lieutenant Riker? What? The Thomas W. Riker clone caused by a transporter whoopsiedoodle? He was never 2nd in command, that was Commander William T. Riker, you ought to know this as an alleged trekkie Simon!!! :P
“Exciting new diseases.” 😆
"at one point in history, it was so heavily varnished that it deflected a knife attack"
excuse me WHAT
It would be really awesome for you guys to do a video on Manly P Hall
I quite think drawings of lions with sideburns exude a certain desirable yet rebellious character.
Can you make a Bio about Eugene Delacroix pls💯🙏🏾🙏🏾
Business Blaze is a straight 10/10 would recommend
If I may make a suggestion for a future video, could you guys do one on Osamu Tezuka? The Godfather of Manga?
Any chance you'd ever do a biographic on Caravaggio?
difficult to understand the size of the night watch size... then don't show it in a tiny frame? @11:18
Here are some suggestions for another video - all interesting people though the first two are lesser known.

Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh (1921-2021) - husband and consort to Queen Elizabeth who served in the navy as a young man, serving in the Second World War. He died recently so it would be a good choice.

“Choose only one master-Nature”
Rembrandt
Do one on Pablo Picasso!!!
PLEASE do one on Caravaggio!
As a complement check the beautiful comic by the Dutch artist Typex “Rembrandt”, an unusual visual journey about Rembrandt's life 📙....
Have you done a video on Carl Panzram
I've always thought that the true greats of art must be the opposite of someone like me who has ADHD. To apply paint to feathers like that, to concentrate on the piece for so long and not get distracted. It's totally beyond me.
Or maybe it is ADHD that made them hyperfocus on what they were doing.
@@grown.ass.nerd. ADHD doesn't work like that from everything I know about it, as a sufferer from a time before every kid who's a bit over active gets the title I've always had an interest in it and needed to find a way to help me stay focused, it took years back then to get diagnosed. We do hyper focus at times but it never ever lasts long before we wander again, they'd have to keep stopping and returning which would really harm their flow. The hyper focus, good memory, thing is a big part of how I cope, I just have to have non important subjects to distract my mind when it wanderers then go back again. Bit more to it obviously but that's the basics.
They might well have something similar but different in the way it makes you stay hyper focused rather than not being able to focus for more than a few minutes though, that's definitely possible I'd say.
The slightly long answers is also a bit of a thing I have.. 🤔 😉 😅
i'm not even close to rembrant but i hope not. i have ADD but i quite enjoy drawing.
@@grown.ass.nerd. My mother started painting at 50. She had been losing her hearing for decades, was feeling isolated, so my father bought her a starter kit for Christmas. She painted every second she could. Started off with oils. She would have 2 or 3 going at the same time, and a hairdryer going to dry her work, so she could get back to painting as soon as possible.
It made her really happy.
@@itarry4 I have to disagree based on my own experience. I have ADD, and I hyper focus on things more than going from one thing to another. If I'm interested in something I'll research it to the point of exhaustion, and have a hard time getting anything else done until I do eventually lose interest
im sure simen has some kickass commander decks...
I feel like Rembrandt when I too buy katanas and precious stones even though I should not spend my money so frivolously.
Whatever the hell Danny decides to tell us about his life for 30 mins.
Well, he gets bored in Simon's basement. 😆
He can't talk about himself any longer without mentioning communism
Fondly rembering pre basement life. Wonder if Simon keeps him calm by pretending when Covid is over he'll let him go
🙏👍👍👍👏👏👏 Thank you!!!
When you learn more about the artists here than during art class.
I highly recommend Business Blaze.
You should do Jared Fogel from subway next!
I would love Caravaggio to get the Biographics treatment.. .
O MY GOODNESS MY FAVORITE PAINTER
For anyone on the fence: Yes, you want to watch Business Blaze.
But beware. No new Blaze for 2 days in a row and you'll get Blazing withdrawals.
He’s a tad unhinged there.
@@Urban_Piggy understatement 🤣
Could you please do an episode on Artemisia Genteleschi?
Simon, can we have an extended one on Duke of Edinburgh?
please do an episode on Moe Berg. an amazing story.
3:04 you're telling me a town when you haven't even said WHAT COUNTRY he's even in!!
Magic the Gathering by Rembrandt...I'd buy that!
why not they did a bob ross secret lair
Hey Simon. Could you do The 40 Elephants?
Simon is like Ryan Seacrest’s youtube. Man just has all the hosting jobs.
Rembrandt would never, ever light a sitter's face on the distal side. Observe and learn, Simon.
“Arquebus” sounds like a fantastical airship out of a Jules Verne novel.
