- This 1974 series starred Clifton Davis as a barber in DC and dealt with his friends, family, and of course his mama (Theresa Merritt). Ted Lange ('The Love Boat') played one of the friends. The show ran for two seasons and had two themes. The first was an instrumental by Allan Blye, Chris Bearde. and Gene Farmer. For the second (short) season Lamont Dozier composed a new theme song. Both are included here.
Although i liked the first season's instrumental theme, I had no idea the second season theme was written by Lamont Dozier. Sadly, we lost him in 2022 at age 81. I knew most of his work with the Holland Brothers during the Motown years, and he had a solo effort in 1974, Fish Ain't Bitin'.
Such a '70s vibe. A perfect time capsule of that era.
The What’s Goin’ Down episode was my favorite!
Did you spot Jackson Heights own Randy Watson in that episode as Joe the policeman?😂
😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oooooohhh Weeeee! I really love the second theme. Lamont Dozier sounds great and the music is on point.
It has a good funky beat
Season two is the theme song I remembered from my childhood. About twelve years ago I bought season 1 on DVD and I was thinking to myself, I don't remember the music sounding like this LOL
Lamont is a genius!!
Love the first theme song, super funky
I remember this watch in the 70s still watch the reruns love this show
I ❤️ this show I watched the second version when I was 9yrs old
Why they won't put this show on television instead of multiple episodes of Friends and the King of Queens?
I Agree. That's My Mama Second Theme Song Has To Be The Most Underrated Theme Song All Time. I Honestly Enjoyed The Theme Song Better Than Good Times, Sanford & Son And The Jeffersons Theme Songs. I Feel Like It's Up There With The Best Theme Songs If It Wasn't The Best Theme Song. I Hope The Singers Of This Song Had A Music Career A Successful Music Career. I Never Troll.
The show only lasted 2 years, where Friends and King of Queens were on for many more seasons. Besides that it always seems that TV shows from over 40+ years, close to 50 aren't interesting to today's audiences. (In the 80's, we watched the 60's and 70's, etc)
RIP, Lamont.
the second theme was great. what a catchy song "talking about my mama"
This intro is from season 2 (1975).
When Lamont Dozier composed the new theme song, it just fell into place with Motown during that time.
Season 1 was better, though the second theme I remember hearing being up 6 in the morning on WKBD 50 in Detroit!
I'm from Detroit also. I was 14 years old at the time when That's my Mama came on TV 50 before I. Saturday Nights shortly before Amen came on TV in 1986. I didn't know that there was another version of the theme from the show. I like the first version better too.
i got both seasons on dvd
Season 2 theme song.
Ah... So THAT'S his mama...
I was quite young when this was on. I thought it was related to, "Good Times". So JJ is now a barber in a sequel series or something like that.
You must be white trying to be a smart aleck. Ain't no way JJ could ever look as good as Clifton Davis...
The second one is the one I remember, I was born in 1970 but I don't remember what year this show came out, can anyone help me with that?
The show premiered in 1974, ran for 2 seasons and ended in 1975.
I want to know who was in the band that played this
good look at an affordable DC
Randy Watson played Joe the policeman on the what’s going down episode

My mom HATED this show. She says it was stereotypical.
