There is an extremely low chance for Eagun's Pikachu to win against Hitmontop because Pikachu can paralyze with Static and Hitmontop could theoretically fail every Paralysis check
15 years ago I was doomed to find a shiny Hitmontop that wasn’t actually shiny. I was so distraught to see it just be standard colors in my box after catching it and wondered if it just needed to be purified (which clearly wasn’t the case)
I looked up the occurrence a couple of years ago and never found an answer till now, thank you for explaining this decade old mystery!

I like how the game runs at 60FPS during purification, it's so smooth, but it normally runs at 30. I hope a 60FPS mod comes out someday, but it may be impossible.
I would love to see that someday. Some people said maybe we're getting a Colo/XD double game for Switch next year similar to the Super Mario Allstars we got recently. Would be super dope!

@riley JP/hacked gamecube/wii, gba, ds, one jp ruby or sapphire, but then you can trade it to an english gen 3 and transfer it to an english gen 4 if you don't have a jp ds game

I lost access to my old yt channel so yeah I used to go by general grievous if u remember me but yeah another great vid, got my first shiny legit mew, it was the first Pokémon I have ever traded up from hoenn all the way to swsh
Something to note if you're shiny hunting on pc... Saving state right before you encounter the trainer with the shadow for some reason can net you the same stats in between attempts. This is never the case of you load the save file instead of loading the save state

Skarmory is my favorite Pokemon of all time. With it's addition to Sword and Shield I am heavily considering getting a shiny one with all possible ribbons in all possible games. It would be an difficult journey, but it would be an amazing one if I pulled it off.
I agree, this is probably one of the most epic journeys a Pokémon can take! Visiting every game and region while getting every single ribbon - it can take up to hundreds of hours, but it's a great idea! I am considering it with my shiny shadow Suicune! GL to it if you ever start it!
@@OliverMKP Definitely do it with your Suicune man! A special mon you have will become even more special! Just remember to do the lvl 50 battle tower first so you don't get locked out of it by over leveling.
I want to do Quilava and Suicune myself as they are two of my most favorite mons, but with gen 2 starters not in gen 8, I'm considering Suicune first. A little bummed to learn you can't transfer items over until after you beat the game though :/
@@Ninj7 Yes I already made the start and finished the 2 ribbons on Colosseum! Now I am starting a new savefile in Gen 3 Hoenn for those ribbons. I think it's gonna be a great challenge and as you said it makes my favorite shiny even more unique!
Definitly GL once you're starting it! But yes unfortunately really hard to shiny hunt the legendary beasts in Colo because you don't have a Masterball in non japanese copies at that point.
I got all but one ribbon on my Skarmory ribbon master keep it up

That sounds great!! Especially now that we got the news that the Nintendo eshop will close in 2023, the deadline for ribbon hunters gets closer and closer. They luckily said that BANK will be free for an unknown amount of time, but it's likely not gonna be forever free. I am doing a ribbon quest with my shiny shadow Suicunce myself atm!

Thanks man! Yes you can skip a couple of mons for later, have a close look at the list I was showing in the video this will tell you which ones you can skip! The majority of shadow mons are story related tho and need to be caught.
that Suicune shiny is straight fire.
I might consider this hunt for the Legendary Johto Beasts despite having an English Colloseum since I have everything set up for at least Entei. But Suicune and Raikou would be also my targets too when or get to their point because FRLG were next to impossible to hunt because of how much time it takes to find them.
Best of luck if you decide to go for them! The Johto beasts are beautiful targets to go for in Colosseum, I am currently still hunting for shadow Raikou. They are quite long hunts, but as you say not as long as the FRLG equivalents.
@@OliverMKP I might do this hunt once I get that accessory to make the resets much easier than going back and forth on the console on the 18th at most so it won't take so much time like you said prior.
Just last Tuesday I was playing Pokémon battle revolution just because I like the animations and gen 4 in general, I was playing the trade colosseum in post game trying to make a trick room battle pass and the trainer had a shiny walrein on their pass, I didn’t get it because they didn’t use it and had no retries, but it’s super rare and I still got pictures, also good information on exactly how the shinies work in this game, I feel like the information for this game is harder to find than revolution which is niche itself.

Two years ago I did for 12000 reset for a Vibrava shiny on Colosseum, it's quite long as you have to go through the shadow Pokémon lab, but I got it !

My first ever game was XD Gale of Darkness, but even then I didn’t know at the time that pokespot Pokémon could be shiny. I will be hunting some Pokémon on that game later in the future somewhere.
Colosseum definitely has some interesting methods, like how only the Shadow Pokémon in the first battle can be shiny for us, but if we didn’t catch it then, can’t catch it in the rematch.
So, how many master balls are available in the game? Just one like all the other games?
And as for the method about losing to the trainer before the shadow Pokémon gets sent out, is it better to do this method? Or saving at a terminal before seeing it?
So for the first question - yes there is one "story" Masterball (short MB) during your savefile.
But if you play the Japanese version of Colosseum and also happen to own the Colo bonus disc, you can collect Poke coupons and buy more "early MBs" with the bonus disc!
Regarding your 2nd question - losing the battle before the shadow mon gets send out saves time for some hunts, but not for all. Sometimes the trainers send out their shadow Mons first turn, for those hunts it's obviously not possible to lose before it gets sent out. But especially for like the legendary beasts or for other hunts where the shadow mon gets sent out at a later turn, it's worth it for the time saver!

If you don’t manage to see the shadow Pokémon when you lose, how can I ever tell if it will be a shiny, without catching it? Thanks again for your time and I’m still going to use this method for the legends and pesudo.

Okay so I am currently hunting shadow Raikou in Colo and that's probably a great example:
When you set up and prepare your team for in my example shadow Raikou, you could start just hunting it. Which means start game, run into the trainer, KO until Raikou gets sent out and then catch it to check if shiny.
However, before starting the battle, the trainer will have a dialogue, which is quite long in Raikou's case. If you now lose to the trainer and go back to him, the dialogue will be way shorter!
You basically save time each reset for that. And now that the dialogue is shorter, you perform the hunt just as usual, starting the game, catch and check if shiny and if not rinse repeat!

@@OliverMKP I admit I did use an Action Replay to get Master Balls early since I'm hunting on an English Colosseum game so I can get Shiny Entei easily without hassle when or if I obtain it, 53 resets so far.
Hey man, great explanation for the guide!! I just have to ask, can I still hunt for the shiny legendaries even if i'm not on the japanese bonus disc? Or should I be on the japanese bonus disc only for them to be shiny? You mentioned that I can and SHOULD catch them with the japanese masterball at 4:32 so i was confused if the legendaries can ever be shiny on the english game.
Thanks for the compliment!! To your question, the legendary beasts can be shiny in all Colo versions. It's just WAY harder to hunt them without the early MB, because the resets will go anywhere between 4 and 50 minutes. But if you really like challenges and/or you really can't access the Colo bonus disc, you could go and hunt them without. Hope that helps!😄

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it! Naturally, you would need a Japanese GC/Wii because of the region lock. However, you can homebrew your Wii to remove the region lock, allowing you to play any regions games!
Hey man i love your video but theres one thing im confused on the soft resets ? So theres no button combo for SR so does that mean i just save by yhe trainer i wanna battle and then catch the pokemon and if its not shiny i just push reset on the console? ( im using a game cube ) thanks for the great info though
Exactly! You save at the nearest terminal and if the shadow mon is not shiny you just press the reset button on your Wii/GC. XD later has a soft reset button combo but in Colo we never got one.
This was great and very helpful! However I have one question, at 7:05 you talk about specific targets you want to hunt for if they are available by looking at the P🌟DA. I am currently hunting for shiny smeargle in the snagem base. Now in my current saved file I HAVE NOT encountered the smeargle yet, meaning it’s my first battle against the trainer with it when I fight him. However it is in the P🌟DA because Nett from the under analyzed it off the data rom, but the location and trainer both have question Marks because I haven’t encountered it yet. Does this still mean I can hunt for it though it’s on the P🌟DA even though I have yet to encounter it yet? I believe I’m ok but I just want to make sure
This is indeed a very specific situation. In your case the Smeargle works as a "seen dex entry", but since you saved before the first battle, the stats and shininess will still be determined once the Shadow Smeargle gets send out in battle.
If you want to make 100% sure, make 2-3 test captures and make screenshots/phone pictures of the stats of Smeargle. If the stats, gender or nature are different, you have a proof that you're good to go.

Can you use save states instead of full soft resets (if you save state before the Pokémon comes out)? Say I want to shiny hunt metagross, this would take a very long time because of the four battles before it. So if I save state when nascour has 3 Pokémon left, can I just ko one, catch metagross, and if not shiny SR?

Can you shiny hunt with running Colosseum off of an SD card with a modded gamecube? I have one real copy of Colosseum and I want to double hunt but I don't want to buy another Colosseum if I don't have to. I'm mostly asking about how the soft resetting is with a modded copy if you know, cause it takes a bit to get swiss going when you first turn on the gamecube so I'm curious if that effects the shiny hunting.
Haven't tried it without actual disc's, but should work the same 👍🏼
I have a question, how do I hunt the Johto starters? Do I absolutely have to hunt them later, or can I hunt them during the initial first time they’re there if not then when do they re-appear in the first town area
You can actually choose if you want to hunt them early game or post game! Early game benefit is that you can set up the hunt very quickly, post game benefit is that you can hunt them with the ball and team of your choice, which makes the hunt a bit more consistent!

You can get as many as you want in theory, you just need to grind all the Pokecoupons for each one.

@@OliverMKP I saw on another Pokémon video somebody was talking about how there is shadow Pokémon in Let's Go on the phone I think?? So my guess is that, that could be a hint to them bringing Colosseum or that other Pokémon game called, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness.

I believe all shinies in this game can only have a specific set of IV combinations as well. Which explains why you may see a shiny on the opponents side and when snagged it turns into normal non shiny. Because the IV combination wasn’t compatible with the shiny seed
No, that is actually a common misconception! Shininess and stats were bound together in Gen 1&2, but never again since Gen 3. The only things that matter for shininess since Gen 3 are Pokémon/Personality ID (PID), TID and SID (secret ID).
If you watch the whole video, I explain how the shiny will NEVER happen on the trainers side during the 1st battle, because during the first battle the PID roll happens for YOU on the shadow mon. And only if you battle a 2nd time vs. the trainer, it's possible for him to have a shiny (because the game now rolls the PID for the trainer, since the roll already happened during your first battle).
IVs have nothing to do with the shinyroll at all. Hope that helps to clear the misconception :)
Hey, ty for the great guide. I'm planning to hunt the legendary beasts, I am @entei right now, just need to unlock the masterball. How exactly do I do it? The story mode mt battle is not unlocked yet obviously, so do I just farm coupons in battle mode? Will those count towards the 30k I need? If so, what's the fastest option, doing colosseum or mt battle vs 100? How long did this take you and what team did you use?
The legendary beasts are epic targets! I am on the same quest and I collected the 30k coupons in Battle Mode. You can do the "vs 100" option and battle against the first 80-90 trainers, that always gives a good amount of coupons. But it definitely takes a while, probably ~25-30 hours for 30k points. I went in with a high level Quag + Altaria and used EQ+Surf
@@OliverMKP So are double battles faster than single battles? Could you also run a team that you import from a GBA game or will that not give you any coupons? (I did the first 10 with a GBA team, got 50 coupons for it, but my trainer pass in story mode still said 0. Or are battle mode coupons stored seperately from story mode?)
@@bombademar4711 In Colosseum only double battles exist. I think it doesn't work with imported teams, I leveled up my Quag (and some other mons like Eeveelutions) in story mode and used that team for the battle mode (leveling takes quite a while tho). Also you need to "exit and save" at the guy (you see him after every 10th fight) when you stop your run, this is the only way you can claim your points. So let's say you finished fight 80, you talk to that guy and click the last option so you save and claim points while returning to the main menu. Hope that helps let me know if there is anything unclear still!
@@OliverMKP Okay I think i will just level up my story team then and do it like you did. I had a singles and a doubles option for the battle mode tower, singles being 3v3 battles and doubles 4v4, but that might be with gba imported teams only. Thanks for you help, doing all this when you can't read a single word of japanese really makes this quite difficult.
@@bombademar4711 100%, I used a lot of translators and other playthroughs to figure it out. And yes you're right, the 3vs3 and 4vs4 options are only for GBA imports. Good luck with the grind man!
Hey i want to know if bayleef is shiny locked in phenac, cause it hasnt shined for me for almost half a month and I feel like Ive been hunting one thats locked and wasting my life, or i just have bad luck
It's definitely not shiny locked, in the video you see it also on the shiny list. You have to note that getting Colosseum shinies in under a month would be extremely lucky. I am hunting for shadow Raikou for example for 2,5 months now and I am not even at half odds. In average Colosseum hunts go for quite some weeks/months if you are fast, and for little over a year or more if you're just on and off hunting.
this is a random question I have been trying to find an answer to for awhile but what if you used an action replay to make all the Pokémon shadow Pokémon would those Pokémon that weren't originally shadow's be able to be shiny if I used a code to make them all shadow Pokémon ?
In theory this sounds like it should work, however you'll not find any cheat code that makes non shadow Mons shadow. However there is an easier way: You can just use a shiny lock removal cheat on the non shadow Pokémon like Ho-Oh, to make them huntable. I hope that helps!

So if I start the battle, lose to her and make sure Suicune did not come out yet, I can then save and start hunting with her having less dialogue because I lost the first time? And I have to make sure to lose before she sends out Suicune because that will end up locking Suicune to whatever it is in the first battle permanently?
And another question, do each of the cipher admins send out their Pokemon in a random order? Meaning in one battle Suicine can come out first and in another Suicune can come out last?
To your first question, yes that works. Shininess gets determined once the shadow Pokémon gets sent out in battle for the first time, so if you loose BEFORE that happens you save dialogue.
And the 2nd question - almost. The shadow legendaries always get sent out as the last Pokémon. All Pokémon before that happen in a random order tho. So each battle will be different, the only consistent thing is that the shadow legend gets sent out last.

I'm in the final battle but ive lost and save , so that means that tyranitar will be shiny locked forever?
It depends. If you lost & saved *after* shadow Tyranitar got sent out in battle, the stats are locked in. But if you did *before* it got sent out, you can still hunt it!
Fun fact - the optimal way to hunt it would be losing before shadow Ttar gets sent out anyways, that way you can immediately go back into the battle and don't have to rebattle all the other trainers over and over again.
CHALLENGE! Someone catch a quilava, purify it, but keep it from evolving. Send it ALL THE WAY to Legends Arceus and then evolve it.
I've been working on that since Legends release behind the scenes actually - just with a shiny one :)
@@OliverMKP Having a shiny Hisuian Typhlosion PLUS the ribbon saying it was purified is pretty slick. Gimmie tips for catching it. I want to do exactly that, but also give it all the other ribbons it can possibly get along the way. Have the spiffiest Hisuian Typhlosion in the world.
Like, for example, does Synchronize influence natures in Colosseum? If so, I'd need to spend time making new save files until the Espeon has a Timid or Modest nature.
@@the_clark_side8466 That's a super sick plan! So at first, synchronize works since Pokémon Emerald. Unfortunately, not in Colo or XD GoD. You'd have to go with whatever nature you'll get.
Then, you can hunt Quilava either in the very early game, or in post game. Good thing about post game is that you have more ball options (for example if you want to catch it in a Luxury/Dive Ball whatever) but early game is way easier to set up.
If you go with the early game one (premier balls, poke and great balls are possible here), you'd need a lvl 28 or higher Espeon solo with White Herb (from phenac gym). Use confusion on Quilava first turn and then throw balls and hope it's a catch.

@@the_clark_side8466 Yeah the battle starts with a screech grimer and smoke screen Quilava, sometimes it happens that Quilava breaks out of the first ball and they'd KO your Espeon if screech hit you 1st turn, but White Herb definitely helps you there. Luckily it's accessible really early on in Phenac before the Johto starters 👍🏼

I’ve seen so many people have a level 70 Quagsire for shiny hunting the legendary beasts, do you know what’s the best spot to grind in order to get to level 70? I haven’t played the game in years and I plan to soon so I wanted to know before hand please!
The best spots would be either going into Mt Battle and do fight 1-70 and once reaching 70, going out and starting with 1 again (the last 30 battles take so much more time that it's faster going in and out again). Or also one of the later Colosseums are a good place to level as I heard.
So if I catch it I'll be able to immediately know if it's a shiny shadow Pokemon and if it is I'm set?
Pretty much yes! Once you caught it and check it in your team / on your field you'll see if it's shiny with the icon and/or sparkles.
Is there a fast way to soft reset using the controllor or do I need to press the reset button on the actual gamecube itself? With my current setup that would be very inconvenient
Unfortunately in Colosseum, there is no soft reset button combo. However, fans recently developed a mod that implements a soft reset button combo. If you're interested in that Colo mod, let me know!

Pokémon Colosseum doesn't have a soft reset button combination. You need to use the reset buttons on the console itself to reset the game (on the Wii it's the bottom button of the top buttons).

In general you never HAVE to catch them in a Masterball, the Masterball just brings the time per softreset to its minimum.

I don't get exactly what you mean. Shadow Pokémon are shadows, until you purify them. But you probably meant "can it still be a shiny" - the stats are determined once the trainer sends out the shadow mon. It doesn't matter how many balls you need to catch it - the stats and shininess will stay the same until you reset your game.

Wait, that bonus disk? Is it the one that came with Jirachi? Cause I have that one. Or is it another one. Either way shiny Suicune looks sick. One of my favorite legendaries.
There are 2 bonus disc's, the Jirachi one for NA and the Celebi one for Japan, for the early Masterball you'd need the Celebi one but it might also work with the Jirachi one actually, you can try it out! And yes man Suicune is a really great shiny! One of my faves for sure! 😄

@@aeolus15 In Colosseum, only shadow Pokémon can be shiny. Since your starters, Plusle and Ho-Oh are sadly not shadows, they are shinylocked.

Shiny wise? No. The shiny odds and mechanics are completely the same. There is only a difference in quality if you want to record your hunts, because I heard that apparently NTSC versions have a higher video quality. But for shiny hunting the region version doesn't matter.

i just got colosseum a few weeks ago and i have a question about shiny hunting: if i fail a legendary beast can i get a shiny at deep colosseum? or is the pokemons data saved and cannot be shiny anymore (i ask this because its level and moveset are different than the ones at the first battle)
You are definitely talking about Suicune, that is actually a special case: It has a different moveset depending on if you catch it during the first battle or rematch - however the shinystats are generated in the first battle for you, so when you catch it in the rebattle the stats will always be the same (so if it's not immediately shiny in the rebattle, you can not hunt for it).

As long as you download BANK + (important) also PokeTransporter through BANK, yes.
After eshop shutdown (on Monday), BANK will be for free for a while and as long as it's still running, you can still transfer your old Gen mons to BANK and also HOME.
So make sure to have BANK & PokeTransporter ready before Monday and all will be good (for a while)!

You need all trainer battle e-reader cards. I think there are like 3 cards you don't need which just change the stadium background or something, otherwise you need all of them! But if you don't want to invest in those (they are hard to find nowadays anyways), I know people who could provide you with a savefile if you wanted to setup a hunt for one of those for free!

@@ultimaLugia One of the "faster" hunts is the Eevee starter hunt in XD, takes like no time to set it up and you can also find a uncatchable shiny Salamence which is pretty cool. It's about 2 minutes per reset. Otherwise Makuhita or the Johto starters in Colo are also easy to set up and not too long. If you have any questions let me know!

The shinies look different in this game, will they retain this color when transferred to other games or will they appear as shinies normally do in those games?
Once transferred to the main games, they will get the shiny colors of those games. (Unfortunately) they don't keep the GameCube shiny colors when they leave the GC.

I watched other Colosseum shiny hunts and they found it was shiny once checking their pokemon team, but there was one (Heracross) where the shiny was out on the field and was purified shiny. Confused on this part on why it is like that. Does that mean it was a rebattle and the data for shinyness for the player was there the whole time and the original owner happened to get a shiny on their side?
If I understand your message correctly, you're saying that someone found a trainer with a shiny Heracross and after catching, it was shiny for the trainer as well? If so, yes. It was during a rebattle (since opponents can only get shinies during rebattle, if it's not Hitmontop) and the Heracross was always determined to be shiny for the trainer as well in this case.

Yeah the setup was definitely time consuming, took me about 40 hours iirc with coupon farming for early MB + Quag leveling.
And yeah the bonus disc is pretty expensive nowadays. Maybe you know a friend who has one so you can give it back to him?
I've got a question if someone could help me out please. I'm doing a hunt in colosseum on emulator and the problem isn't with the hunt itself, it's with the reset. For whatever reason, when I reset colosseum there's like a coin toss or something on whether or not my controller will work. If it does then great but if not then I have to keep resetting (which adds more time.)
I guess I have 2 questions. Anyone know how to make the controller work consistently? It works every single time for other games.
Can I reset by creating a savestate on the main menu and loading from that instead? It seems to work everytime that way. Also if using savesates is there a better place to load from? (I'm starting from the "press start" option on the first menu.
I never hunted on emulators, but I heard it's a common problem that sometimes the controller doesn't work after resetting. Idk if it's possible but if you can make a savestate from the "Continue" menu instead of the main menu, it might fix the problem. It's worth a try I guess.

My question is can I still hunt T-Tar. If I decide to hunt metagross.I don’t know if I hunt metagross and it’s shiny can I lose the battle on purpose and I keep it. So I can hunt T-Tar or is that not possible
That is absolutely possible! You just need to make sure you loose the battle (either meta battle or Ttar battle) BEFORE shadow Ttar gets send out.

Shinies are possible in any language! Just know that the early Masterball is only accessible in the Japanese version. So some Pokémon are harder / not possible to hunt in the French version. Let me know if you have a specific target in mind and I can help you to set it up!

I have a scenario that I'd like to be explained.
Let's say I decide to get every shiny in Colosseum, with using the Master Ball as much as possible. I'd do the Japanese version, naturally.
However, as someone who doesn't understand the Japanese language, how do I know what the game is telling me?
I can look up a walkthrough for Colosseum and follow that for story progress, that's easy.
But what about move names?
Or item names?
To hunt Suicune, you need to put a specific item on the disk, to get over to Venus. How am I supposed to know what the item is called in Japanese?
There are two things you can do if you want to go on that quest:
Follow a walkthrough in a language you understand as you already said.
Or you start shiny hunting some of the very late or "after" story shinies in a Colosseum game of a language you understand.
After playing through it 1-2 times, you know what you need to do even if you don't speak the language.
And if you're not sure about a specific part, you can just search for a walkthrough again.
Is Shiny Shadow Lugia possible?
Shadow Lugia is only available in XD: Gale of Darkness. In that game, it's sadly shiny locked.
So does this mean I am unable to get shiny vibrava unless I have the Japanese bonus disc with the early masterball?
No not quite, it's just recommended to use the (early) MB because it brings the time per reset down to its minimum.
You can still hunt every Pokémon with other balls, but it might take (way) longer per reset.
Shadow Vibrava is ironically one of the easiest Mons to hunt without MB, there is a strategy that makes it very consistent with a Ultra Ball. If you're interested in that, let me know and I can give you some more detailed information.

Actually it's quite important to NOT loose if you want to hunt. Because once the shadow mon gets send out *on the opponents side*, the shininess for *you* is determined. If you'd lose the battle from there, the shiny roll already happened and you'll always catch the exact same Pokémon species without rerolling shininess.
Sometimes for specific targets, it might be beneficial to lose so the dialogue is faster (this is i.e. the case for the 3 legendary beasts). But it's very important to make sure that you lose the battle BEFORE they send out their shadow mon, aka BEFORE the shiny roll happens.

1) Catch during your first battle with this trainer
2) if you fail to catch it/defeat it/you get defeated, just run into him again. The shiny roll already happened during first battle but since you lost you hadn't have a chance to check for shininess, so catch and check for shininess and reset if not shiny.

If you're talking about shiny hunting in general - no. You can find shiny shadows in every language of Colosseum.
If you're talking about the early Masterball, that's only possible with the Japanese version and it's bonus disc.

Oliver_MKP I believed it mainly cos one of my fav PokéTubers mentioned the odds of it being Shiny were “rolled again when it was purified”, I didn’t even think we could get Shinies in the wild till I got my first in Gen IV (Shiny Ponyta - Flash Fire - Relaxed Nature, caught outside Veilstone, she sits happily in my Diamond game to this day).
