@BrushstrokePaintingGuides if your looking for another video idea you could do one about how to paint black armor/carapace, i know that you have some videos about how to paint (insert faction with black armor) but a dedicated guide would be nice!
Good call and you'll be pleased to know it shouldnt be too far away either. I think I'll do a few "Black" videos, as I have a few nice recipes that I use
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuidesthat's not precisely true. The Knights Errant, a number of whom were the founding members of the Grey Knights at the end of the Heresy, wore unpainted armor and that was undoubtedly grey.
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides That's what is enjoyable about your videos, it's relatively simple techniques demonstrated at a very high level - I'm still new and it's nice to see that you can get great results without 10,000 glazed layers or specialist equipment

Yeah, it does, doesn’t it? Works great on scenery and vehicles for that reason too. The shoulder crest was just a base of a dark grey and then a couple of layers of increasingly lighter greys to add some highlights to it
I'm going to be doing this to my world eaters, what colours would you suggest? I was thinking either abbadon black or leadbelcher to look like chipping or scratching from weapons?
For red armour I’d stick with the same brown and silver to be honest. It’s dark enough to contrast without looking too cartoony. Black can be very overpowering if you’re not careful Why not paint up a tester shoulder pad and try it out? Much easier to strip just a single piece and a shoulder pad is still big enough to get a good feeling of if it’ll work or not

Silly question, what is that device you're using to rotated and hold the model with while painting? and how do you attach them to your models ? Sticky tack? glue? I assume its so you're not man handling the model while painting. I need to use this technique. :)
Not a silly question at all. It’s a very sensible question And the answer is painting handles. I explain all in this vid in the chapter on painting handles 👍 ua-cam.com/video/KxF8t6k39cE/v-deo.html&si=FsLoHpOtLMtMALrV
OK, so damage on black can be a tricky one and it does depend on the look you're wanting. You can either opt for just using your highlight colour and some metallic (washed with nuln) Or, you can go the Rhinox route I showed in this video. Brown actually works really well. It can give the impression of either rust or grime (depending on the tone you use) and you can still highlight it with your highlight colour to give that 3D effect
This is all done without an airbrush But you’re absolutely right, the whole process is massively accelerated with the use of an airbrush. I’m only a basic airbrush user myself, but I’m sure I could put together what I know so far to get people started
Your videos are just brilliant. A kindly, succinct and informative tour through processes that can actually be as straightforward as you make them sound and - ultimately - demonstrate in great detail. Thank you 🙂
This looks really good - less def is more. How do you do that with black armour? I think I like Ferisian Grey most, then adding some metal colours where the damage is the deepest. How do you normally do this?
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Ah, I thought it was just a really light yellow at first. It didn't register to me that it was a pure white. Thank you for clarifying!
Love your vids! Busy building my first 40k minis and it is intimidating when you see how nice people paint models and then there's noob me ^^ But you vids definitely give me confidence in painting my first minis well! How would you do battle damage like this on black or dark armour?
Brilliant, I want these videos to be as useful to as many people as possible. This is just an intro to battle damage but it shows some simple ways to get people started
Not specifically, no. But I am making a series of fundamentals videos which I'm planning on have one on glazing for sure. I've done paint thinning, brush basics and wet palettes so far and the next in that series is going to be on using washes / shades. So stay tuned :)
Great tutorial as always. In addition, besides using rhionx hide, and overall using brown paint for chipping, it's alway good to give some scratches with the colour of the paint beneath, so it looks just like paint started chipping a bit, but not as hard as where rhinox is used
I know this video is on the old side, but I appreciate you making this video, it has been helping me add character to my minis. I'm relatively knew, and my paint scheme is a mixture of brown, and tan. What would you recommend for shading/washing as well as for the damage? I've been trying black but I'm not sure if it's too much.
OK, so for your colour scheme I wouldn’t use black as it’ll be too strong looking. I’d go with a medium grey like Mechanicus or Eshin. And then use your highlight colours you’ve used elsewhere on the model. That should work fine.
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Oh! Thank you, I'll try that. I've got something like Tempest grey from the reaper range I could try, but I can pick some up. Awesome content, what colour would you use on flat black from ScaleColor ? I will be happy to see a tutorial on how to paint some icy glowy energized effect on sword !
Thanks man OK, so flat black is interesting because with it being so matte, you can actually get a non matte black to show on it. So, you could for example do scratches with Black Legion contrast over flat black and then highlight them with your highlight colour However, it could be too subtle for the effort and I usually opt for a brown to give the impression of grim build up. If you wanted to you could then paint a black scratch inside the brown line so give it an edge all round and then just pick one side to highlight. That works well too
A little weathering can go a long way to making a model look a bit more lived in. Like it's been a part of the world for a while. It's also a great way to mask that the decals never seem to go on perfectly. Don't go overboard with weathering though. This is very much a less is more kind of technique in my experience. Too much will hide the nice smooth paint job you spend hours on.
