For me, it's push or nothing, as I enjoy the pushing, walking and sweating of the experience. It's a good workout once a week.
You’re a dumbass
Then you get older and realize the benefits of a self propelled, trust me. I also use to like shoveling for a workout.
@@sharpthingsinspace9721 I lift weights, and go walking almost every day, so pushing a power is easy. I also dig garden beds and ditches by hand. Once you do it enough times, you realize that techniques and sharp quality digging tools make it much easier than people think.
"Once a week". That's the key. Use the thing every single day and you'll be begging for a self-propelled model.
so the self properlled are like an e bike. Good if you are an older guy having to mow the lawn
The older you are, the more you need a self-propelled mower. Trust me!
Start doing strength training! It will help you immensely. Trust me. Just start with the bar without weights, and once your technique is down pat, you can at 5lbs each workout. Strong Lifts, or Starting Strength are the programs.
Just turned 29. Appreciate this comment lol

Agreed!
Thank you. You answered my question nicely when it comes to having a lot of stuff sitting around in a fairly small yard. I see the mower that isn't self propelled is the best mower to use for this kind of yard. So, yes both types most certainly have their advantages. In the case of my yard a self propelled is great because my yard is free of stuff except for a tree in the back and some landscape boulders which cause no problem to mow around. But my neighbor has got so much stuff as well as trees and plants in her yard trying to maneuver around it all with that cheap Smartstow self propelled mower which the transmission broke the first time I ever used it. I'm not blaming her. I just didn't know the pitfalls of using a cheap self propelled mower in an overly cluttered yard. But it had a 30 day warranty on it and I got my money back and bought another Poulan Pro. I have an old one that I have mowed that yard before and never had problems, but I know now days plastic gears are used in transmissions of some models. I just need to change the worn out wheels and replace the belt on my old mower because it is a good starter and runner. I've used the old mower for 9 years so it's been a good one. But things do wear out on mowers even though the motors start and run just fine.
Thanks really helpful for a medium lawn newbie!
Michelle Grant No problem!
I do a home made stand up with the self propelled and it’s actually works well when you stand on it
Thank you for this thorough and well knowledgeable description. Really was very helpful to listen to, especially for us novices. Kind regards.
My first lawn mower is a 14 year old weed eater lawn mower, it was used for a couple of years after it was bought and then in storage for 9 years until moving to a house that we had to mow our own lawn. But just a few days ago I got a toro self propelled with a Honda engine.
Thank You for this Video,,, It was very informative and helped me decide on wether or not I need a Self Propelled Mower or not...
If one's yard is not large enough for a riding lawn mower, yet is large and open enough that pushing is a chore, get both -- self-propelled for the open areas and a very light push mower for in close.
i had a lawn service for 7 years and mowed 45 lawns a week with a lawnboy mower. The mower was fantastic EXCEPT for the self propelled. The self propel slowed me down bigtime. I was young then but to me the self propel just wasnt worth the money and i think the extra weight makes it harder to maneuver. I still believe a simple push mower is the way to go....
the self propelled will break down far more than the push, and from my calculations a self propelled will cost 3 times as much per mow than a push mower. I just bought a 21inch troy bilt tb130, its far better built than a 22inch push weedeater....the weedeater mower lasted 10 years!. on the other hand Ive had 2 toro 22inch self propelled who's belts and drive assembly went out after 2 years....was repaired for $80 then after another 1-2 years it was shot.. paid $380 for each toro and $229 for the push troy bilt and $160 for the weedeater push mower 10 years ago.. I mow 1 hour every week for 8 months out of the year.. yes its more of a workout to use the push but Im saving about $150 a year+ on mowing costs.
jamesb7777a I truly appreciate that you have worked out all the math to explain your reasoning. I can see where it makes more sense to invest in the troybilt.
I just bought that same Troybilt mower late last summer, broseph. I had a Honda who's self- propelled linkage just fell apart. I finally realized that my yard wasn't that big, no hills..so I was tired of over complicated mowers. I just need a deck, handle, engine and blade. The TB130 has been great. It's light and with the bigger real wheels, easy to push. I expect it to last me another 50-60 years.
I'm not kidding, I had a push mower and it lasted 22 years!
69 years old, and I use and want a push mower. Get one with oversized back wheels and it is a breeze to maneuver. I can also lift it into the back of my pickup by myself if I need to. I don't have acreage, maybe 5000-6000 square feet. I see no reason to have a heavier, more complicated mower.
Thanks your video was helpful. My current Tecumseh Crafstman (push) mower was given to me as a house warming gift 23 years ago. Just rebuilt the carb and its still starts and runs like a champ - although the deck is showing some rust through. I've been looking at some of the new Toro Super Recyclers but your video has given me reason to stop and think. I have a suburban lot 50'x120' lot, relatively flat and when you subtract the house, garage, landscaping etc. I estimate about 4000 sq. ft. of lawn with plenty of turns and obstructions - now I'm thinking a better push mower would be a better buy than a SP unit. Thanks.
I use push mower for my type of yard, trees, plants, hills and yard lights. I've owned a self propelled mower previously but that thing wore me out fighting with it to maneuver that thing around obstacles and up hills. NTM, they're alot heavier and that gd belt! 😆
A very good comparison.
the problem with SP mower is that in theory the SP seems easier for hills and what not, but there always comes a time where you have to pull the mower up a hill for some reason or have to pull it from time to time. When you have to do that it's much more difficult to deal with because it's much heavier than a regular mower. It's also, another thing to break down on the mower. And, when the SP breaks down, believe me a light push mower would be better to have. And, if you have a flat yard, why in the world do you need SP to begin with???
Great vid, real informative.
Brilliant review, well balanced. My lawn isn’t large but it’s on a slight hill and is very uneven with many Lumps and bumps and poor quality grass. I can’t manage pushing an electric mower . What petrol mower would you suggest?
I have read on an online forum that the Honda self propelled system is problematic, especially the three speed. The old two speed is better, but still troublesome.
Thanks for the video
Great comparison and it does helps. For me as a visual person, I would have loved to see them in action. I have a push mower and riding mower, but I never tried the self-propelled. I don't have an acre yard but it's big enough, and I know I will need to replace both of my lawnmowers soon.
I have an 21" MTD Yard Machines 12A-449R729 With a Briggs & Stratton Quantum XM Engine One Speed Self Propelled Mower
Self propelled: Great for lazy and/or elderly people. Heavier. More things to break.
Push: Great for a very light workout. Lighter. Less things to break.
Push-1 Self-propelled-0.
Push is better in most cases.
I was hoping we could see the SP working
Which one can I be faster on, self propelled or push. We have a used craftsman self propelled, but I usually push it because it feels too slow. But it may just be the machine.
Good video! For me it’s “push mower” all the way! I’m getting older, have some big hills in my yard, and needed a new mower so I got a self propelled mower thinking it would be better. I was wrong lol! I can’t stand the self propelled mower. That thing is heavy, bulky, hard to maneuver around, and it takes longer to get my yard cut with it somehow? I’m selling it and buying another push mower lol! My yard is about 1/2 a acre fyi
I have 1/4 acre, helf-uneven property with sidewalk and ditches. Been thinking about getting a self-propelled since it takes a solid 90+ minutes to do the yard, and gets very tiring (especially when I have to do around the ditches). The Push mower is fine an all, but it doesn't handle the grass very well come rainy season (property is kinda like a sponge, so can be difficult to walk on). Saw some self-propelled mowers for $300 now, but was wondering if it would be better to get rear wheel or front wheel self-propelled.
Push mower all day
Push is much faster as I can throw it around, back and fourth, trimming around trees etc. They usually put a smaller engine on the push. Wish someone sold a light push with a powerful engine
I like a push mowet but I do have a honda HRX2176HZA, along with 2 push mowers m I grab the pushers first
At 6' 4" tall I don't find pushing a mower a big issue. It's just finding one where the bar comes up high enough I can push it efficiently. Most of them seem like they're designed for 5' tall people or something. I've even though about trying to build a custom bar for my cheap push mower.
I like self propelled
Which is better for carpet grass
Just let the grass grow it will die in the winter
I have a 24 inch cut self perpelled cub cadette pushmower it is the best mower out here
te
Self Propelled All day
Depend what size is the yard
I bought a self petrolled and then i had garsge built and have half the grass now.so i dont need self p...
Push mowers are better
why?
I like push mowers better - for me, they're easier to use. Sometimes you have to, or want to, push ... such as over lumpy root systems or at the end of a row when you have to turn around ... it's such a struggle to push a self-propelled mower sometimes ... it feels like pushing blocks of concrete. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Anyway, it's even worse reversing it ... I miss our old push mower. If our yard was straight up and down with no obstacles, I may feel differently, but I doubt it. Having it be self-propelled doesn't seem to make it much easier, only more difficult ... at least for my needs.
vaslle you’re right though. Self propelled are generally recommended for flat and/or large surfaces. Otherwise the cut’ll just look horrible. Push mowers are much lighter with more manoeuvrability.
u did not show.how they work to know difference ir how they work. sorry unuseful
This is a good example of how not to make a video.
I'm sure your 11 subscribers appreciate your technique
@@JoeMills Joe, you did a great job on this video. This guy complaining is a very poor judge of this kind of thing.
Where's the demonstration for the propelled mower? Video sucks!!
YEAH! This video sucks tons! How dare he?
LOL. Let me know what propelled mower is... Also, no one cares
Excuse me, sir. Women buy mowers too. Lol
Didnt start the mowers! 🙄 Useless review
