I happen to have a 1997 DB7 with the good old 3.2 Liter Supercharged 6 cylinder engine and havent had a bit of trouble and it cruises at high speed all day without a hiccup. One of the best and most beautiful cars I've ever owned. Ian Callum had it dead on with this car.
I've come to realize that Aston Martin makes the most beautiful cars on the road: DB7, DB9, Vantage, Vanquish, etc. And don't get me started about the earlier Aston's...
Ian Callum is a one-of-a-kind car designer. The DB7, Vanquish Mk1 and DB9 Mk1 were all done by his hands, and despite the models' ages, still look good in 2012. I'd imagine that would continue to do so for the rest of history.
honestly I'm an italian and i much prefer italian cars over everything but somehow (probably due to the cool factor they have) aston martin has made into my top car brands
I saw one of these in person the other day! Astons are my favorite so I'm amazed to see one for the first time :D I'd rather see a V8 Vantage, but this is nice too.
anyone notice that callum managed to draw the aston v8 vantage like 4 yrs before it was announced? think he may have had that idea for quite some time! He is an awesome designer- db7, vanquish, db9, aston vantage, jaguar xk- all fantastic cars and all his designs!
Ian Calllum - the best designer Aston Martin ever had. The Vantage looks stunning (not the new 2018 one - that looks like a catfish from the front). Jaguar certainly got their man!
Jeremy made a mistake on 3:37 In the times of Ivan the Terrible St. Petersburg was even not been founded. To be more precise this legend is about St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow which was built in the middle of XVI by order of Ivan the Terrible.
Exactly! I couldn't agree more! You have a fantasticly speedy cruiser, a great GT car for European roads, and then you have a car that can hanle the speeds on the Autobahns and the French motorways. And besides that, you have an Aston Martin.
Sorry, used my brother's (he forgot to log off) account to reply. What I mean that the car Jeremy is talking about is much slower than the M6, but the one he is sitting in is the Vantage version is as fast (and more maneuvrable). The M6 is an extremely heavy car with loads of electronics that leech on its 500 BHP V10 (even if put it in 500+ sport mode). The 414BHP M3 is exactly as fast as it's big brother. It goes through a dry mountain road as fast as the 380BHP V8 Vantage does it in rain.
That's under Ford management, now they're ownder by prodrive they developed a manual option for the Vanquish, a Performance pack for the V8 Vantage. Some footballers go for Astons but they mainly go for the Bently Continental GT, Range Rovers and Lilcon Navigators.
You make a good point about their similarities, I guess this is no different to however many other manufacturers who use a similar basic theme in many of their models. I think if you get comfortable with the design however its quite desirable no matter which car.
they've been bought by Prodrive who made the amazing P2 Concept, who make parts for Scubby rallying and parts for satelites and space shuttles. They're already improved Aston by releasing a performance pack for the V8 Vantage and bringing the gorgeouse Rapide concept production date forward.
My mechanics recently worked on a low mileage 1998 AM convertible. Poor welds, underpowered and horrible electrics were just some of the things discussed. Amazing that they sold 7000!-Gearhead222
That's pre vantage. The vantage had 420 hp and topped out near 200. Every car could use hp but this car is no slouch. Pre 2000 db7s were slow and not as well made.
I quite agree. it's not difficult. it's about the most simple part of the driving experience. you get in and put it on. how hard is that. and if you don't put it on? tough! it's there, people have tried to help you and if you don't accept it that's your own fault.
The best bit of this is the designer predicting everything right about legislation and what was done to comply. Seeing more and more cars with bonnets that fire up, the screen shapes the, 3 foot wide a pillars etc
The current best looking car in everyway to me is the DBS and in the green they tested it in on Top Gear was just EPIC. The interior could have been better but the exterior is fabolous
Exactly, even though the 6 cylinder was sort of an ''experimental'' ford mondeo engine.. quite dissapointing if you ask me, that's why it was removed from the range later on
I agree. I'm an American and I don't understand the difficulty people have with seatbelts. I work at an auto repair shop, and so many people complain about state law making it legal to give you a ticket for not being buckled in.
sorry for double posting, but the car was sooo much ahead of its time!! I consider it the best mid performance GT ever for that: the DB7's performance was easily outdone as time went on, but this, after almost 10 years remains a beauty and a rocket!! Ask me, the DB7 V12 should be a meterstick for mid-performance GT cars, just like the Porsche Carrera is for sportscars... PS (no relation to video): but are you Russian? (Ты говоришь по-Русски?)
We also had a Top Gear in Australia too. Whilst it was tolerable in some parts you could tell the hosts were out of their depth and clearly nervous and staging most of the comedy. Our basic personality here in Australia would actually suit a show like Top Gear so hopefully they align the show more with our style so hopefully it will improve.
Being a U.S. citizen, I find some of the regulations to protect "unbelted occupants" mentioned in this episode extremely frustrating. I always wear a seatbelt and my passengers go nowhere unless they are wearing theirs. Cars should be able to have radical, beautiful designs like the 70's Lamborghini in this video.
@oarih94 - That's the reason that when a passenger jumps in any '08-up vehicle sold in the US, there's a chime that indicates someone, and often which someone, isn't wearing their seatbelt.
They designed the DB9/V8 Vantage on Top gear (or the new Jag, copy cats!) It is a fantastic shape. Anyone seen the new C Type concept? That is amazing.
This video was probably taken much before 2007 (when the DB7 Vantage was still in production), the picture Ian Callium drew (as well as the other person, sorry I don't know him) is very close to the current Jaguar F-Type with the roof down...interesting.
If you notice those two pictures do look familiar, look at the latest Jaguars that were put out like the XF and XJ and the 2012 XK and they look very much like those two pictures, so people were really getting a taste of the designs we have today, by far though Mr Callum should have had his Knighthood for the DB7, and if he won't get it for that, he definitely deserves it for his work at Jaguar, Britain can claim the prettiest cars in the world again!
The only thing Aston on this car is the badges. It was originally designed to be the new Jaguar. Ford however, being owners of both companies, ordered it to be introduced as an Aston. The front and back of the car was therefore re designed by Ian Callum to suit.
@reel2real5 The DB9 is a beautiful car in it's own way, compared to the DB7 it is more spectacular, but the DB7 is more timeless, and prettier, and for me has the edge over the DB9.
yeah i know this car is older but the the one from die another day the vanquish or something like that is look almost the same as the dbs and db9 only the rear lights were different
DBS is still better...believe me, my favorite brand is Aston, and I've analyzed all the models, while they only have minute differences, the DBS (in my opinion) stands out teh most...though I must say, the new vanquish is growing on me...
All Aston's are beautiful looking cars, but the one that would always stand out is the DB7. The body is just epic and the rear end is just carnography :D
Finances aren't the only things that Ford has provided for Aston martin, Jaguar and Land Rover. They've also provided financial consulting, design assistance and have influenced many of their chassis basis.
am i the only one who thinks the db9 is prettier thn the db7 mostly because of the more modern interior the larger grill the different headlights and taillights and the modern "swan doors" that open slightly upwards which just looks so cool!
hahaha those crafty Jag boys, they boy just sketched you the new XK! but i suppose this was filmed a couple years before it came out, little bit of a preview for back then i suppose.
That's amazing! They desiged the Aston Martin DB9 and the V8 Vantage and the new Jag XK on Top Gear in a minute! I want to become rich and hire someone to draw cars to my specification all day.
I for one happen to be American, and I absolutely agree that European cars are the finest in the world. Yes we have the Dodge Viper, and the Chevy Corvette but they are crude musclecars at best. And I'd bet this Aston-Martin DB7 will blow them both away on the road, with twice the comfort and style.
And a new XJ is coming. Jag is actually selling lots of diesels. And those diesels are very very very quiet. Let's hope they don't ruin their brand by making mainstream cars that blend into the audi/merc/bmw stuff. The XF already looks a bit too much like all the other big saloons. But it's gorgeous from behind.
Well, no. The Vanquish is a DB7, yes, but the "Vanquish" is a V12 engine version. The DBS of Casino Royale is an enhanced version too of the DB9... I want to guess how's going to be the DB10... DBX? it sounds cool to me.
"Shall we take the Aston?" I'd love to say that!
Buy a Cygnet XD
+mundotaku Yeah, you could probably find 'em used now, though the only way you could buy one new was to also buy a real Aston, too...
@@mundotaku_org you won't believe how much they cost now
Db7 are cheap nowadays 20k for a decent one
@@Sirdiggar those r normally automatic tho
Timeless design that still stands out today.

I wish Top Gear would go back to this recipe for reviewing cars. Clarkson thrashing them around the track is getting a bit samey.
Top Gear has lost its way big time, the journalistic review has been tossed aside for laughs and views.
I've come to realize that Aston Martin makes the most beautiful cars on the road: DB7, DB9, Vantage, Vanquish, etc. And don't get me started about the earlier Aston's...
They aren't cars, but porn on four wheels
They had the F-type waiting for a whole decade by the looks of it
Damn It actually IS an F-Type.
The DB7 was going the be a Jaguar and called the F Type until Ford decided to give it to Aston Martin
The F-Type had been planned to come out in the mid-2000s, but they invested the money in diesel engines and emissions reduction
@@joewatson249 Chances are it probably would've had a mondeo V6 in the range as well
Little did we know back then, they were actually sketching the F-Type coupe.

DB7 is getting a bit old now, but the DB9 is still spectacular.
DBS which is basically a db9 but still looks so beautiful
Ian Callum... Legend
had a hunch this was fore-shadowing the V8 Vantage arrival in more recent years
He designed my Jaguar XFR. I still think it looks stunning

I think the DBS and the DB7 are both extremely beautiful!
And from this video, the F-Type was born :)
You aren't wrong
that's exactly the silhouette of F type looks like
No no no the rear quarter is totally different you complete tit.
It was originally an e type remake that never made it. Aston then turned it into the db7
Nice to know a fellow Scotsman designed 2 of the most beautiful cars ever made!
The DB7 in BRG w/those turbine wheels they offer is how I'd have mine👍❗🔥
just wish we could build cars like we did 30-40 yrs ago. classics never die
