Why 24 not 48??

48 also works:) Remember you do not always have to multiply the numbers together (although you can). Think about the lowest common multiple of 6 and 8. It is 24.
But if you use 48, it will still simplify at the end :)

I still don't understand why cancel the denominator, don't you need the denominator to divide the numbers?

With equations, you get denominators the same and then you can cancel them :)
