Jim Davis, I see that you have corrected yourself in a separate post. Indeed, the 'ocean' is the audience. Led Zeppelin was ~four years old at the time of this show.
Robert plant was singing about his Daughter. That was 4 years old at the time ...1973. She is 54 now we're the same age. She was born in November 21 of 1968 and I was born on the 7th of November. 1968.
Back when rock and roll was pure and unadulterated. It was guitars and drums and emotion. The 60's and 70's was the greatest era in rock & roll, with the 90's coming in a distant 2nd.
The song overall is talking about fans in the audience and how their cheers sound like the waves of the ocean. The lines where you stopped and asked was specifically about his daughter back home that he misses when he is on tour.
i was young driving my 79 trans am listening to this and i still do.glad to see young people enjoy it.try joe satriani, flying in a blue dream. live. R.E.O speedwagon 157 riverside avenue...live. Robin Trower...a little bit of sympathy..can go on forever..

Back in the day, we girls all had huge crushes on Robert Plant and Jimmy Page; I wanted hair like Robert's! This is one of my favorite live videos of LZ. And yeah, he was talking about his daughter Carmen. (She is now an adult and a belly dancer; you can find videos of her dancing on YT, btw.)
The tempo and key change in a lot of Zeppelin songs is why I love them so much! Black Sabbath are the king's of blindsiding you will a tempo change, but Zeppelin does it perfectly, especially in live performances. Not a lot of modern bands pull this off as well as they did back in the late 60's and 70's.
@LFR Niah I really like your reaction/commentary in relation to Zeppelin. Very insightful. IMO, the most impressive & unique thing about Zeppelin is unlike other bands (The Beatles, The Doors, The Who, Rolling Stones, etc.) very early stuff (in the 1960s) SOUNDS LIKE THE 60s. But then Zeppelin's first album came out in 1969, and nothing about it had a 1960s vibe about it. In fact, most every Zeppelin song can sound as fresh today as it did when Zeppelin played it when the song first came out. VERY unique in that respect, as I don't know of another band that has managed to pull that off like Zeppelin's timeless music has. Just look at "The Ocean" sounded too cool when you first watched it, right? And to think this was performed back in 1973, and yet it's still SOOOOOO cool-sounding hearing it in 2021. ;)
My good friend got me into Zeppelin many many years ago when I was a mere 16 years old. I was lucky enough to have the same hair colouring and curls and grew mine exactly like Roberts - even though Jimmy is my favourite. However, the drawback to having hair like that, is guys being behind you and asking ‘excuse me miss’ 😊😳
Thank you for the great reaction - it is obvious you have fallen fully down the Zeppelin rabbit hole! May I recommend When The Leve Breaks, Gallows Pole, Boogie With Stu and Going to California! It is wonderful that you are helping expose this great classic music to some new audiences!
Yes, Zeppelin had some amazing transitions in their music. Of course back in the 70s there was a lot of music that did that. It’s often referred to as a rhapsody, just like in Bohemian Rhapsody. Here is the definition of a musical rhapsody from Wikipedia: A rhapsody in music is a one-movement work that is episodic yet integrated, free-flowing in structure, featuring a range of highly contrasted moods, colour, and tonality. An air of spontaneous inspiration and a sense of improvisation make it freer in form than a set of variations.
This was unused track from the movie, nice to see something different, especially Bonzo singing some backup. Love your comment on making you want to learn the guitar. I grew up in the seventies, Jimmy Page inspired me to start, wanted to play like him, of course nowhere near the talent. Spot on about changing the tempo and feel of the song midway. Zeppelin did that often in many songs. If you have the stamina watch the live version of Dazed and Confused, about 25 minutes and they change things up at least 15 times.
Your reactions to this band are GREAT!!! Led Zeppelin's transitions are something Page is a master at along with creating riffs, grooves and playing a wicked guitar. The band as a whole decides how alot of the music goes but John Paul Jones, the bassist, is an extremely talented arranger and does alot of LZ's arranging. He and Page worked as session musicians prior to Led Zeppelin and they were know as the very best session men and John also arranged at that time. Absolutely not a stupid question about the 4 year old!!!! Yes - It is his daughter, Carmen, who as of a few years ago was a professional middle-eastern dancer (ie belly dancing) and is married to a bass player who was in Robert's band in his solo career.😁 At this time, Robert had another child-a son, Karac, who tragically died from a sudden illness in 1977 while Robert was on tour in the US. A very tough period for Robert and he was away from the band for about a year and LZ did not perform live again until late 1979. Thanks for the reaction!!!
In the Light, Kashmir, Misty Mountain Hop ~ all great Led Zeppelin songs you might like! :) I like what you said about rock-n-roll Christmas. They inspired so many musicians. Job Bonham inspired me to learn drums. You might like Moby Dick if you want to see one of his most epic drum solos :)

Yes, he was referring to his daughter. As she got older he would adjust the lyrics to reflect her age. The original lyrics from the album she was three. Another bit of trivia from this film is they had a lot problems making it and had to go back re-film sections of it so some of the shots may not be from the actual concert itself.

Every day is Rock and Roll Christmas when you're listening to Led Zeppelin!!!
Welcome to my world since I'm 9. Saw led Zeppelin in 1977 I was 13
so did i- 6/6/1977, opening night at the Garden...i too was 13YO. Zeppelin is part of my DNA...
He’s singing about his 4 year old daughter. He would change the age-lyric as his daughter got older.

Led Zeppelin kashmir. From celebration day. The man is in his 60s and still could sing like he was 25

They are very big Elvis Fans thats where that sound came from

“The Ocean” refers to the crowd of people in the audience.
Rock And Roll Christmas.... great feel for the music. Led Zeppelin were the kings of transitions and tempo changes. Seamless.
also, he lost his son, Karic at age 5. Wrote song, All of my love in his honor.
In “the song remains the same” movie Robert laughs and carries Karic I think he was 1 or 2 years old it put a tear in my eye

The ocean is the huge crowds that Zeppelin played to during that time.
They had their own private 747 jet back in the 70's and they were lady killers... rock and roll royalty...
He wrote the song about his daughter left the fans your Wars like waves like an ocean. But this little girl is the one that won is heart
