It's swell to read the appreciations of Johny Mercer. I have like him I saw him as a kid roughly 1962 when I was roughly 12 on the Andy Williams Show and the two went through the alphabet singing songs which began with each letter - the ones for which he provided lyrics . Plus anyone who rhymes "chalice" with "aurora Borealis" is aces i my book!!
Mentioned before that Princeton has a Johnny Mercer Library. Would love to hear some of Johnny's duets with Bing from way back when. Have one tape of him with Paul Anka, just about 40 years later!!
Johnny Mercer...they don't make them like Johnny anymore. I never missed the "Rosemary Clooney show with 4 guys called the Hi-Los, Nelson Riddle and his orchestra...." Thanks Sak...got more?
"I Remember You" composed by Johnny Mercer was made an all time big hit by international superstar Frank Ifield. To hear it type in "Frank ifield" and "I Remember YOU" in the UA-cam Search Bar on a UA-cam Page.
Anyone who rhymes "chalace" with "aura borealas" is okay in my book. Not to mention founding Capitol Records and building a round building for his talent.
And Billy May often deliberately imitated NR, so it's a tossup. Looking at this for the 36th time, I reflect that Johnny Mercer never really got over being a Princeton boy manque...like John O'Hara, who didn't make it to Yale for similar reasons and similarly was pushed into early success.
Who could have disliked Mr.Mercer? This is unbelievably catchy.
Mercer's talent as lyricist and vocalist is incredible--seemingly effortless!

Love the guy! He had soul and was a wonderful singer. His duets were fantastic. And he was a songwriter of the first rank. Love his video.

The song Rosemary Clooney is about to sing is: I Remember You. Johnny wrote it for Judy Garland whom he was smitten with.
Very nice, thanks for the post. First thought it looked like Don Shelton as the clarinet player, no matter who, it's great!
The coolest and the wittiest. Wonderful to see these remarks, Makes you feel less crazy and alone
He's my great grandfather :) I am quite fond of him . Hes my musical inspiration.
Mr. Mercer's music will always be around. He was THAT great!
Haha, that's awesome.
As a singer myself, I think Johnny has become my favorite. My goodness, how he swings effortlessly.
Arlene Corwin (Sweden)
Genius.
No better lyricist than Johnny Mercer....absolute genius.
Damn, he's the coolest singer I've seen in a long time!
Phenomenal! Now I'm ready for Jubilation T. Cornpone! Thank you so much for posting!
Thank you SO Much for this! This song is one that my family used to sing together. A very rare number indeed.
There's a nice recording by Bette Midler on the "For the Boys" soundtrack.
Johnny Mercer was a genius!
Brilliant lyricist!
My favorite Mercer Tune is "When The World Was Young".
Loved Rosie Clooney too!
hes my great grandfather. Hes my musical inspiration!
OH! WHAT AN UNDERRATED GENIUS...AT 82 I DO RECALL APPRECIATING HIM IN MY TEENS OR LATER...SOO..HE DRANK TO EXCESS? ONE OF A KIND!!!
Johnny Mercer: The best voice in Hollywood
What an awesome (and unfortunately) bygone era. Johnny had it all! A little trivia, he was also the founder of Capitol Records.
the boss!!
I love Johnny Mercer.
I have a thing for Novelty songs. They usually have good hooks and give artists a chance to show their talent.
Ella Fitzgerald did a version in her Johnny Mercer Songbook.
Precious...
Mad skills!
Wow what a singer he was
A novelty song, but a great tune. Love Johnny Mercer.
David McAlpine Cunningham moonlight becomes you
Amazing singer, and songwriter! Thanks for sharing this great video! :)
He had such a cool sense of rhythm.
@Cardien18 Like most songs of this era, this is a Novelty Song.

Love his interplay with Jack Teagarden
@Cardien18 But definitely with swing overtones!
So true. Today's 'singers' don't have a clue. Even if they have any talent, it's spoiled by the fact that they all sound alike.
Anyone who rhymes "chalace" with "aura borealas" is okay in my book. Not to mention founding Capitol Records and building a round building for his talent.
now that's a generalisation if ever i've heard one....
Don't send cards though he died on June 25, 1976.
Damn, what's "this song" that Clooney refers to at the end?
Didn't he blow his own horn-pone?
@experiessence : "I Remember You"

I can hear that Mercer was really influenced by the African American culture when it came to music
Yes, they mention that in his bio. He's from Georgia.
Mercer is great, shame about the miming clarinet!
