As a starting Guard player, that's pretty much my opinion. I do have too many Command Squads, using this and a couple of the Combat Patrols (and I arguably have too many Dorns, since I picked one up before the Christmas boxes got revealed), but at least they add meaningful durability to a squad through their medic's Feel No Pain, and help get Orders all over the board, even after casualties. The problem is infantry squads are silly expensive, and value boxes are often aimed towards players starting armies over veterans. Without the old 15 dollar box of 5 cadians you really need infantry in the value boxes to cut the cost of a guard army down.
@@DragonuFearikr i love how gw wants to sell you stuff and price it based off of how much of an army it takes up, unless thatd take the price below like 60 or 50 bucks. Outriders being 60 is ridiculous for literally 1 and a half sprues

My wife got the Votann box, and I got the Tyranid one. Need those Nids for Horde mode, and also the Emissary is just cool. My wife was kinda falling out of love with the hobby until we played Horde mode, and now she's looking to pick up the Combat Patrol too so she has the whole army like you said lol I tried to get her to get the Ork one because I love Squigs, but she plays Ork vehicles and already has a Kill Rig, so it didn't really interest her. I could have picked it up for myself I guess, but I wanted the Nid box more and money is expensive "It hurts when I get up." You didn't have to come for me like this Brad, you didn't have to go for the throat
The only Christmas box I regret missing out on was the Knights box last year. I really want to make a Chaos Knight army and that would have been great but of course I was a dummy and saying “nope not going to start a new army” back then. I’m pretty sure I’ll never see a thousand sons box set that’s worth it because I already have the major centerpiece.
Honestly i felt similar about the nids box this year. I kinda wish it didnt have the hive tyrant because theres so many hive tyrants floating around on ebay and stuff. Its been in like, every value box for nids for years
Agreed. Cause the Salamanders Strikeforce box gave you. Adrax, 3 Aggressors, 3 Eradicators, and I believe 20 Intercessors along with Salamander Primaris frames. Which is an amazing starting point for someone wanting to play Salamanders. Or even just getting some decent units for marines.
The Tyranid Box is a bit of savings, but I think the real reason it sold out so fast is because Norns have been out of stock since release. I personally do not need another flying hive tyrant to take up an entire case, so I can wait till the fabled day when I find a norn at my flgs.
I hope you guys come back to do the 24 battle forces. We got a pretty good dark angels box, a pile of tau battle suits, a slightly worse version of the last knights one, sisters rhinos and friends, and void dragon plus warriors.
The Sylvaneth box from last year was killer. If you built it for max points, it was like 1300 and all useful units. For another $200 or so, you could make a legitimately solid starting army.
The Ossiarch Box this year is absolutely bonkers value. Morghasts are a pain in the ass to find in the US, you get a LK, and you get more of your anchor units (Mortek+Nanny and Kavalos). It’s very solid and the Harvester is pretty fun to paint.
Australians have just brutal prices, exchange rate's about 2 AUD to 1 GBP, but they pay a 3 to 1 rate. 224 for a Kill Rig and 98 for Outriders. Interesting to contrast them with Japan, which has a similar exchange rate (after the yen are cents math) but much lower prices, 18700 for a Rig and 8300 for Outriders. I get that their pricing models are from a bygone time, and they like to talk about how much it costs to ship things out there, but I can't imagine trying to partake in this hobby at GW prices over there.
@@nebulonian1385gw shifting the costs to the consumer is pretty dogshit when they likely ship in large bulk quantities. Espescially making it a difference of 10-40 dollars or more
You guys should compare start collecting/combat patrols over the years. And the old school battleforce boxes. But yeah that SM box is so transparently dangling 15 of the new shiny assault guys in front of you so they can get rid of the atvs and bikes.
That ending remarks of the "go back in time 6 moths to get your aemy box" is some thing some one actually told me when i was contemplating votann but instead of 6 months it was like a year
I may well be wrong, but I think the Daemon Fulgrim release for the Horus Heresy all but confirms that we won't be getting a 40k update to Fulgrim or Emperor's Children for a long, long time.
Well, there's now an Emperor's Children Index. It's trash, but it most likely means that either the end of this year or sometimes next year, we'll get a proper release for them.
I ordered two of the Orks boxes because every single bit can take two variants of it if it's not an infantry kit and it gets you so many options. I'm stacking it on with my CP and the Boarding Patrol.
As a Guard player, I have wanted at least 1 Rogal Dorn tank since they released, but could never get my hands on one. As soon as I saw this had 2 Dorns, I grabbed at it because I already have a nearly full Guard army
In defense of your statement on the guard box: as a guard player myself 40 infantry from this box and the combat patrol alone is not enough. Most guard players run a minimum 60 and an average of 80-90. If you’re going heavy into infantry that number goes well over 100. If there is anything certain with guard, you can never not use another 10 or 20 infantry here or there.
The Thousand Sons box from last year was my first foray into the tabletop portion of Warhammer. Think it's kinda cool that I started and finished my first year of the hobby with Daemon Primarchs.
I am looking forward to my squig box. I really want a 2K army of squig orks. Not big into the rest of the ork line. Definitely tempted to buy 2 if my local game store has a second copy.
for the guard box. as a guard player you NEED like 50-60 guard at least if you're going armoured to be competitive. if you're going arty you need way more and if you're going pure infantry you need WAY WAY more. Command Squads are useful not for having like 2 command squads but because you can get a command squad and kit bash 5 different HQs for cheap.
Just for the future, if your are stuck getting pushfit, clip a small bit of the pins they will fit better. With the outriders i broke the pins off completely, as a couple were broke in the indomitus box and made it easier to make the gap minimal. Hope this help someoen.
The price hike is more drastic in canada where I think they went from like 220 to 280. Combined with our taxes (which can be up to 13%) this is quite a huge jump for the average collector.
Besides 2 squads of cultists and a myphtic blight crawler i never brought a singular box for any of my warer armies. Only big boxes most of the time with a discount. So far not bad.
As a World Eaters player: that is 2 Eightbound kits. Many people have difficulty finding *any* Eightbound, let alone two whole kits. Solid from that alone
I'm under the impression that they roll a bunch of dice and select units off a paper depending on what the dice say after throwing in whatever they can't sell and/or are pushing.
Not gonna lie.... I was expecting a "And they are already out of stock" after the transition to the show at 0:26. Great episode. I hope the patrons ask for an AoS episode.
It's good to know thatafter spending time buying, building and painting my hormaguants, genestealers, hive tyrant that I'm going to have a fairly unique army.
this new thing is this time is : when you buy some of them twice (when you can) you can actually make a very nice army . The best in mind for me are Tyranids, Orks and Votaans . (got lucky enough to buy 2 ork ones and 1 tyranid... i can't think of a best deal to keep me occupied for years).
I bought Bastion Strike Force recently because I am building imperial fists based army. It fills all my Gravis-clad desires and I get aggressors which are strong now. Gordon I didn't own so was a good pickup for me.
Speaking as a Votann player who had to experience having only the combat patrol box and not being able to buy everything after because it sold out right away, I loved the Ancestors box as it had everything I needed and could want. Not to mention at the time it was readily available than the individual plastic kits, oddly enough now that I think about it.
One thing I’d like in the Cadian Defense Force is a heavy weapon team. It could be another unit or be mixed with the infantry to run them as infantry squads and platoon command squad
As a new player who is itching to break into World Eaters, this box looks absolutely delectable. Plus, Poorhammer signing off on it is just the confirmation I need to know I'm not getting screwed. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
3:15 God I wish I could still get em that cheap. I am lucky to find outriders at under $50 now I would also say that comparing the DG/TS box to WE is very reasonable
Starting Votann, managed to get one copy of the Christmas box (would have tried for two but was also getting the Orks) from my FLGS but managed to find a Sagitaur at a discount as well which I've grabbed. Then I'm going to use the loyalty points the store offer for another Hekaton in the future. More roundabout way than getting two of the Christmas box but pretty good way of getting that sweet double up of the expensive/hard-to-find vehicles.
I was somewhat relieved that SIsters didn't get a box this year, though it's hard to get Sisters at a discount, I still have the last 2 Sisters Christmas boxes on my shelf (because Sisters at a discount is an auto-buy).
To be fair, the Christmas boxes at least had loads of the new models in them, so they were decent even for veteran players. Most of the time they just throw in old stuff to make up the numbers, like the old guard kits, chimera, old boys kits, etc in the 2020 ones
Hey, Funny story from a german here the World eaters were sold out almost instantly and the Crap marines are still available 4 days later. 🤣 however i myself am happy that i got myself a set of the Tyranids (sold out after the first hour) so im gonna see if i can get my hands on a leviathan box next month so im really good off in the mix and match department (I literaly just started collecting the tyranids like half a month ago). The rest sold out also quite quickly but to me it so fucking hilarious that their "poster children" are so unwanted😆 considering the value of the box it's no surprise but still im smiling thinking about it
As a reminder, Ebay is a GREAT way to get a lot of miniatures. Maybe not precisely what you want each time, but I have 3000 points worth of misc black templars including 5 Dreadnoughts, 4 Rhinos, a drop pod and well over 50 marines, Helbrecht and more for 350 US.
I bit the bullet and went for the tyranid on. It has literally all of what I need to complete my post Leviathan release set that I got. I'm actually ecstatic for. I paid way too much, but I cannot wait to have those freaking new hormagants and Genestealers...and that sexy new nornqueen
I was so angry at how fast the boxes sold out. These should be for newbies getting into the hobby and someone casually wanting to pick this up would just never get a chance. I tell people to play AoS cause it’s more newbie friendly and the models are more available/cheaper
I mean, if I played orks I’d be all over it. I just cannot let myself buy a horde army and then jump all in. I also think part of my problem is my brain only has so much capacity for 40K and I’m struggling to retain all the knowledge.
I am way late here but I am only now catching up with the podcast at the moment. One thing you missed when talking about the Imperial Fists and Raven Guard boxes is that they also included the upgrade sprues specific to those factions. They have limited value to players that aren't specificially in those factions, but they are still part of the monetary value. I would actually say that those Battle Force boxes for specific marine chapters are actually a good concept, as they give a bit more direction and allow for better deals for specific play styles, but I would say they could have used a bit more variety in them. As someone who started a Slamanders army this past year I was very happy with picking up their box, even though I still have 10 Intercessors on sprues that I will probably sell instead of build. Then again, they probably had the best box among them, and I got a discount at my LGS.
I got the Salamanders strike force off Amazon when I got into 40K, The Aggressors, Eradicators and Adrax were good and the upgrade kits were useful but the rest of the box was just 20 Intercessors. I still have 15 unpainted Intercessors
A quick note on the world eaters box: eightbound are nearly war dog levels of impossible to find. They've been pretty much out of stock since the army launched, and whenever they're restocked, yhey sell out in minutes. The box including 6 of them is a huge selling point, and probably why it sold out in 5 minutes
I was lucky enough to get two Votann boxes and bought two combat patrols only needed to get two other things and I am now officially done buying my army :) loved this box
Christmas boxes are so weird man. They're clearly designed and marketed as gifts, but for the majority of people it's a hard sell to ask them to spend $250-$300 depending on what currency you use on, to someone who is unfamiliar with the hobby, literally just plastic toys.
So I managed to get hold of 3 Christmas boxes - two Votann and a World Eaters one @ 25% off RRP so £315 for all 3. The objective with the WE box was get a cheap Angron - Already sold the 6x Eightbound for £60, selling the Berzerkers for £30. So that's a £25 Angron model. Second Votann box got rid of half the hearthguard and extra characters which equals a Sagitaur, Hekaton and 5 Hearthguard for like £45-50 I think.
The only time where I like almost all the boxes was when they released the Apocalypse wave. SM & CSM came with too many marines, Eldar had too many wraith guards, but other than that everything else were near perfect.
You forgot to mention the large double upgrade kits included with the Raven Fuard and Imperial Fist boxes, on top of the characters. So you lose potentially $80-90 value on those. I'll probably be grabbing a second of the new SM boxes to go with my first. Same for the Tyranids one that I already ordered. I collect Space Wolves, Dark Angels and Black Templars (all with Deathwatch shoulders) so the new SM box is super valuable to me as I own zero jump troops and can always use more bikes, lol. The Tyranids boxes will bring my Norn and Tyrant collection up to 5 each. These days you want two Flyrants for your Vanguard Detachment. So some good value to keep me busy next year.
as a new gaurd person. this christmas books good to me to finnish my staring army.of course i want to do more but WH is expensive. i want to get to the table top asap
Been thinking of getting into the hobby with Nids as my first army. Was debating between getting the leviathan box or the holiday box, in the end I managed to get the holiday box before they sold out, so I’m glad it’s a good box
Their value is generally terrible for the amount of money you have to put in. When I first bought holiday boxes they were 80ish dollars, now they are 200+ Who the fuck can afford them anymore? I don't care about how much you save because I can't realistically afford the box in the first place.
Hey, 2022's Admech box was great! Buy two of them and you're set for like half an army! Also the Knight Box was incredible, we shall never see it's like again...
The fact that an ATV costs 50 dollars and Outriders cost 60 is absolutely disgusting. They should not, under any circumstances, cost anywhere near that much money. ATV should be 35 dollars most like the old Attack Bike was.
For me it was the soulblight gravelord one vs the 2 years ago one its the exact same but instead of more chaf units you get dogs and beasts that's it its the same box
Something i thought about during this video, what should Warhammer minis be priced at? I mean, we all know Warhammer is over priced, but by how much? Like, how much should a box of infantry be? How about a character, or vehicle/monster?
Leagues box: Cool. Awesome. Nice mix of units. Got me to start a Leagues army. The box I got. Guard box: Cool. Awesome. Personally would've swapped one of the Dorns out for either a Leman Russ or a pair of Sentinels, but it's a neat tank so it's fine. Tyranids box: Cool. Awesome. Nice spread of units, but I've pretty much got all that stuff anyway. Doesn't matter so it's fine. Orks box: Not a huge fan of Snaggas. Not that I don't like 'em, just not interested in 'em. Fine I guess. Don't really care. Space Marines box: Boring. Shit. Terrible. Garbage. Who the fuck came up with this box. World Eaters box: WHAT IS IT WITH EVERYONE AND EIGHTBOUND?! THIS THING SOLD OUT *IMMEDIATELY.*
In AU, the space marine box was 285 (third party) and 3 Jump Intercessors and a Captain is 280. I'll pay $5AUD for 3 out riders and an ATV. But if I didn't specifically want 20 Jump intercessors, and waited for the Christmas box incase they showed up, then I'd be pissed at this box.
I’m at least happy that hormagaunts are finally in a value box, hormagaunts are meant to be the vast ones that burry fortresses, of course they should be in value boxes!
The Bastion strike force you can probably make/kitbash Tor Garradon into a generic space marine captain in gravis (?) armor with power fist fairly easily (if that is an allowed unit/model), so take that point off. Can also probably kitbash Shrike into a Jump Captain.

I have 120 guardsmen and I still don't have enough. I welcome the sea of infantry. Might of been nice to had it as 2 squads of kriegsmen though
"The Voh-taaaahn~" is so very melodious.
Edit: Also, you understandably forgot the lift suited guys with the heavy weapons, one of the coolest but under represented units in the range.
Video Idea. Create you ideal Combat Patrol or Christmas Box for every Army. That would be interesting
I would watch that. It sounds fun.
Honestly a great idea. As a Space Marine player, I actually enjoyed the thematic boxes that were based around a single chapter.
My wife got the Votann box, and I got the Tyranid one. Need those Nids for Horde mode, and also the Emissary is just cool. My wife was kinda falling out of love with the hobby until we played Horde mode, and now she's looking to pick up the Combat Patrol too so she has the whole army like you said lol
I tried to get her to get the Ork one because I love Squigs, but she plays Ork vehicles and already has a Kill Rig, so it didn't really interest her. I could have picked it up for myself I guess, but I wanted the Nid box more and money is expensive
"It hurts when I get up." You didn't have to come for me like this Brad, you didn't have to go for the throat
Its been in like, every value box for nids for years
I feel that “perfect starter box was 6 months ago”. I’m trying to get into the hobby with Salamanders and the battleforce is 1.5xmsrp
And no one seems to have wanted it, much to my benefit. I was able to pick it up for $130!
The Ossiarch Box this year is absolutely bonkers value. Morghasts are a pain in the ass to find in the US, you get a LK, and you get more of your anchor units (Mortek+Nanny and Kavalos). It’s very solid and the Harvester is pretty fun to paint.
The nighthaunt box was as well. Really good value units wise and a solid spread of battleline depending on army build
It hurts to look at American prices for Warhammer. Like a Kill Rig here costs around £70 and Outriders cost around £30
It's because the exchange rate was decided in the 90s when the pound was strong.
@@shadowmetroid18that’s just gw terrible argument for more profit lets be real
Mate over here in Norway it's 90$
@@nebulonian1385gw shifting the costs to the consumer is pretty dogshit when they likely ship in large bulk quantities. Espescially making it a difference of 10-40 dollars or more
We should buy these for our friends as great christmas presents right?
If they were still made of pewter you could put them in their shoes like a cat with lego.
Give them money so they can buy their own stuff.
lol
You guys should compare start collecting/combat patrols over the years. And the old school battleforce boxes. But yeah that SM box is so transparently dangling 15 of the new shiny assault guys in front of you so they can get rid of the atvs and bikes.
That ending remarks of the "go back in time 6 moths to get your aemy box" is some thing some one actually told me when i was contemplating votann but instead of 6 months it was like a year
as always these guys are my north star in the wonderful word of poorhammer and in saving our hard earned imperial credits
Here's hoping next year we'll have a Emperor's Children xmas box with Fulgrim and a bunch of noise marines
I may well be wrong, but I think the Daemon Fulgrim release for the Horus Heresy all but confirms that we won't be getting a 40k update to Fulgrim or Emperor's Children for a long, long time.
@@scerpalman40k emporer children is alr confirmed in the works its almost guaranteed to drop in a year or two
@scerpalman my wallet hopes so, my brain weeps if true
Well, there's now an Emperor's Children Index. It's trash, but it most likely means that either the end of this year or sometimes next year, we'll get a proper release for them.
I ordered two of the Orks boxes because every single bit can take two variants of it if it's not an infantry kit and it gets you so many options. I'm stacking it on with my CP and the Boarding Patrol.
Remember the cadian and catachan defense force boxes? It was 2 infantry squads, a command squad, a chimera, a leman russ, and a heavy weapon squad.
Pepperidge farms remembers
As a Guard player, I have wanted at least 1 Rogal Dorn tank since they released, but could never get my hands on one. As soon as I saw this had 2 Dorns, I grabbed at it because I already have a nearly full Guard army
In defense of your statement on the guard box: as a guard player myself 40 infantry from this box and the combat patrol alone is not enough. Most guard players run a minimum 60 and an average of 80-90. If you’re going heavy into infantry that number goes well over 100. If there is anything certain with guard, you can never not use another 10 or 20 infantry here or there.
Only the World Eaters and Tyranid boxes are sold out in Australia
19:02
Hey, that's me! It is also, quite literally, the only reason I now actually started guard, so I guess it worked
Just for the future, if your are stuck getting pushfit, clip a small bit of the pins they will fit better. With the outriders i broke the pins off completely, as a couple were broke in the indomitus box and made it easier to make the gap minimal. Hope this help someoen.
new to the world of 40k just ordered the orks box to start off btw thx poorhammer for y'alls help
Well.... half are out of stock if that counts 😅
It's good to know thatafter spending time buying, building and painting my hormaguants, genestealers, hive tyrant that I'm going to have a fairly unique army.
I think the votann and ork boxes are incredible and glad I got them
I literally switched from podcast to youtube just to see the hat animation and lens flare. Thanks for the content!
this new thing is this time is : when you buy some of them twice (when you can) you can actually make a very nice army .
Best holiday box was the Squigalanche box. The Ork box is close second
As a new player who is itching to break into World Eaters, this box looks absolutely delectable. Plus, Poorhammer signing off on it is just the confirmation I need to know I'm not getting screwed. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
Unfortunately its already out of stock
@@gumbspleengle5270
Not at my local game store, though! So I'm all set.
If I hadn't already bought Angron, I would've jumped on it right away.
3:15
God I wish I could still get em that cheap. I am lucky to find outriders at under $50 now
I would also say that comparing the DG/TS box to WE is very reasonable
I found the Kill dakka war band discounted at my lgs one day. Long story short, I'm now at 5000 plus points of orks
exact same story for me
Starting Votann, managed to get one copy of the Christmas box (would have tried for two but was also getting the Orks) from my FLGS but managed to find a Sagitaur at a discount as well which I've grabbed.
I liked the bastion box purely because i love how tts made rogal dorn
To be fair, the Christmas boxes at least had loads of the new models in them, so they were decent even for veteran players. Most of the time they just throw in old stuff to make up the numbers, like the old guard kits, chimera, old boys kits, etc in the 2020 ones
the world eaters box is also intresting becuase its SO HARD to get ANY eightbound, so i was devastated i couldnt get my hands on one
my printer finished the last berserker from the box i couldnt buy, today. looks good. cost.....40 bucks for resin
Hey, Funny story from a german here the World eaters were sold out almost instantly and the Crap marines are still available 4 days later. 🤣
however i myself am happy that i got myself a set of the Tyranids (sold out after the first hour) so im gonna see if i can get my hands on a leviathan box next month so im really good off in the mix and match department (I literaly just started collecting the tyranids like half a month ago).
The rest sold out also quite quickly but to me it so fucking hilarious that their "poster children" are so unwanted😆
considering the value of the box it's no surprise but still im smiling thinking about it
Last year was just great. Set the bar. This year falls short of but 2 boxe have an army
I paid way too much, but I cannot wait to have those freaking new hormagants and Genestealers...and that sexy new nornqueen
if you went a few more years, there were some really good ones.
I got a primaris captain, 10 intercessors, 10 reivers, 3 interceptors and a repulsor
Loved EVERY Ep So far. got me hooked
I was so angry at how fast the boxes sold out. These should be for newbies getting into the hobby and someone casually wanting to pick this up would just never get a chance. I tell people to play AoS cause it’s more newbie friendly and the models are more available/cheaper
I hate how great the ork box savings is because I just bought two
I mean, if I played orks I’d be all over it. I just cannot let myself buy a horde army and then jump all in.
I also think part of my problem is my brain only has so much capacity for 40K and I’m struggling to retain all the knowledge.
By Grabthar's Hammer... What a Savings
I bought the Lizardmen christmas box, it contained pretty much everything I wanted to complement the Army Set I got earlier this year.
You forgot the Ultramarine Christmas box set from last year, Scions of Macragge. The best value for the last 3 years.
14:58 that's actually a very good box. Warriors and Lychgard are still pretty good in 10th edition and Lychgard is just sold out everywhere I look.
The only time where I like almost all the boxes was when they released the Apocalypse wave. SM & CSM came with too many marines, Eldar had too many wraith guards, but other than that everything else were near perfect.
10:46 I feel a little called out there guys 🤣
U can prob find the leviathan nids for cheap online from people who only want the marines still
Their value is generally terrible for the amount of money you have to put in. When I first bought holiday boxes they were 80ish dollars, now they are 200+
Who the fuck can afford them anymore? I don't care about how much you save because I can't realistically afford the box in the first place.
Ooh ooh ooh 33:05 he said he was wrong!!! Clip it!!!!
Already in Votann, cant wait to get my Christmas box. 10 more termies, one more sag and another ninja turtles truck is great success
Aww yeah been waiting for this.
You two have become my fave 40K UA-cam channel.
Nothing is more funny than spiteful love like getting someone a centerpiece miniature near $200 just to piss them off
Something i thought about during this video, what should Warhammer minis be priced at?
My family does a gift exchange and my aunt got me (who plays space marines) and I PRAY she doesn’t get me the space marine box
Love you boys
In AU, the space marine box was 285 (third party) and 3 Jump Intercessors and a Captain is 280. I'll pay $5AUD for 3 out riders and an ATV. But if I didn't specifically want 20 Jump intercessors, and waited for the Christmas box incase they showed up, then I'd be pissed at this box.
Love the episode, great subject for a new collector.
Gravis Captain has either an off-hand weapon and a boltstorm gauntlet, which given the contents of the box you could do
Coming back in 2024 with the tau getting a 400 point battle force is hilarious
I regret not getting watchers of the gate or court of the crimson king last year, I should have.
I bought the storm of chogris box couple months ago and the shiddy bike sculpts still give me ptsd.
