Great video! I love my GH6 and BMPCC 4K. They're both more than enough for me. There's some weird full-frame hype going on on UA-cam. If someone won't get great material with GH6, the problem is definitely behind the camera.
The Lumix G9II should have been called the G5II or the GH5III instead. A true Lumix G9II should have had a top panel LCD… The GH6 is an excellent camera for quality production, but just not for the less disciplined filmmaker. The fact that it is relegated to a B or C camera mainly due to lack of PDAF by many, really says it all about the perception in the amateur industry… We still rock the Lumix GH5II with a collection of Leica DG and M.Zuiko Pro glass, more than adequate… Would not hesitate to purchase another GH5II if it breaks or is stolen, regardless of the new cameras released since… 🤔
I am not a pro with many cameras but to me my GH6 is simply amazing. I am still amazed after 1 year and a half when I look at the footage I come up with. I am still exploring timelapse, stop frame animation, macro photography, slow motion video, and I get as excited as when I got it. It is one hell of a camera. Especially if you compare with other brands. For this price you get plenty and a solid built workhorse. And seriously the AF thing and streaking issue is way overblown.
The flippy screen is so well designed...and the button layout and deep grip are perfection. It just feels solid overall. Its a DAMN shame this monster of a cam doesn't have PDAF.
yeah i saw a great deal in a vintage camera shop in japan, selling the g9ii for 1250usd, so i quickly put my gh6 on sale for the same price and effectively upgraded myself for free. i really miss the ergonomics, cfexpress speeds, and audio quality of the gh6 though: i don't know if im hallucinating; but the video images from the gh6 actually somehow feel more "cinematic" and deeper than that of the g9ii which has a more harsh and digital look. anyone feels the same?
GH6 all day. It really is one of a kind. I have held the G9ii and I didn’t like the ergo or the dual sd card limitations after owning a GH6. I’m sorry you’re missing those features.
@@nickalot that Is because the G9II is a marketing camera and the Gh6 is a total beast of a cinema camera. It's a crime what they are doing to this beast. If you want to be a UA-camr pick the G9II, if you want to be a filmmaker, pick the Gh6. simple.
The image from the GH6 is every bit as cinematic as what I get from my EVA1...and with the added bonus of having incredible IBIS and fast sensor readout speed you get very filmic motion cadence. Love the image from the GH6 ❤
I don’t 100% agree with that but the gh6 does hold its ground up against my Eva & s1h. I’ve done several projects where I blend gh6 & g9ii footage with the Eva and s1h and honestly you can’t tell what’s what sometimes lol where I don’t agree is that the gh6 (at least my camera) has a lot of color noise. I have noise reduction as low as it goes so I wonder if using it some would help but straight out of camera it is color noise heavy where my g9ii has organic noise and the Eva is just beautiful. Do you use NR in camera?
THANK YOU. The image of the S1h and GH6 is still the best, even if the new features are convenient. I appreciate you saying this bro and keep up the great work.
Hey Caleb. Thanks for refreshing TouTube with this GH6 upload. I've been relying on touchscreen autofocus with the camera in AF-S mode. Am I behaving foolishly?
Caleb..I dunno. The AF on the 6 works for me. Seriously. Puts AF boxes around people ..tracks them good..works in good light. Color blows away other lumixs...got mine new for $1200. Which is right price for it. It's a camera designed by a committee. Big..hard to hold with my hands..bulky..but it's a beast..for stills too. I have no regrets. It ain't perfect. No camera is. But no pdad no problem ..respectfully disagree on AF. Maybe it's my copy but folks ...it works pretty good.
Hey @MartySender5539 what steps do you employ to get decent autofocus reliability on your GH6? Is part of the secret, to set stay far, far away from selecting AF-C? Thanks
i think it is funny that we get mad at Panasonic for this problem but like Sony does it every 3 months. That being said, I do agree we should be gumpy and grumpy with both. Let's slow down release cycles now that everything is incredible. ONLY make a new one when we have something worth doing :) That being said. No clue what the hell they'd have to make to get me off the S5ii haha
Spot on. Hopefully Lumix will stay true and just bring out cameras due yo users wanting a new one every month so they can do a UA-cam video about it. The mistake they made with the GH6 was bring it out as they felt they had to. They were bullied into it. Some Lumix user's are always gonna demand more. Never happy. They prob want a camera that does internal editing 😂😂😂 or a camera that will talk to them
No. Wait! If the manufacturers stop coming out with newer iterations of decent performance cameras -- how are we going to find a burgeoning used market for the cameras we orherwise cannot afford!? ☝🏽🤓
I'm intrigued over the demands for super high frame rates at ever higher video resolutions -- What on earth are people hoping to accomplish with such powers, film a bumblebee in super slow motion then call it a day? 🤣 Seriously, I would more readily support a demand for a decently spec'd · PDAF · Built-in ND filter · Better battery life via getting rid of the enclosed battery chamber so as to accommodate larger batteries. · Dual USB-C ports · Lower-cost dual XLR adaptor
@@WalkingInWisdom 4K 240p is fantastic for sports, autosports, and surfing videos which I personally love shooting. Think of high frame rate as “temporal resolution.” instead of 8K resolution per frame I need more temporal resolution per second.
The BODY is the best thing about the GH6, but the moment the GH7 with PDAF comes out, we're all gonna say goodbye👀(at least as an A CAM)! BUT Yes listen to our podcast episode on what we are talking about! I think the next GH camera should have something super special like Gimbal mode, or super crazy slo motion in 4K, or even internal ND's to make it more special than then GH6. Just putting PDAF and nothing else in the camera would be kinda a let down (it still would be nice) but a let down to any and all current GH6 owners
I don't know if it's that simple since the GH6 has a different sensor that's not from Sony unlike their newer PDAF cameras, so maybe implementing PDAF is not as easily done if they were to use this sensor on a possible GH7 and if they use a Sony sensor the image quality would certainly be different
I think as soon as the streaking issue was discussed, the GH6 was done. Hard to believe Panasonic can’t fix that, but they either can’t or they just don’t feel like it. But I think if they fixed it, it would be a really popular camera.
Tell us -- What does infrared pollution look like in a video or photo image? Also, why is it that our GH6 units don't easily manifest moire on scenes with high frequency patterns in them, as in a textured shirt or sport coat?
@McSnappples Great answer, thank you much! 'Got any reason why moiré pattern artifacting doesn't easily show up in our GH6 video footage -- which I'm very happy about?
We need to talk about this camera, and its position in the community, more. A lot of people are selling up, like you said. Right or wrong? Thanks for bringing attention to this topic.
Honestly if you upgrade anything just grab another lens. Go out of the box some with a cinema or an anamorphic, that will open an entire world for you guys and still rock your camera.
Hard for the company. People normally associate price with sensor size. Full frame is more expensive than apsc and apsc is more expensive than m43. So when you make a high end m43 and the price is even more than high end apsc camera and lower to mid full frame, it is hard for people to convinced buy the m43. Understand this higher priced m43 camera has better video features, but still that is difficult descion for many buyers.
I use the focus limiter on my GH6 and I find it makes the autofocus very useable for the work I do. It is a little bit of a pain to use and it certainly is not useable when time is limited.
I purchased the gh6 for the 10bit and better AF than my old g85 - and I also have invested in the MFT glass including the 42.5 Noctricron - so changing to FF isn’t an option for me - I think Panasonic could and should invest in upgrading the software to add file sharing and Phase detect AF - Olympus added superior AF other MFT cameras - with software you can do anything - I won’t be buying anymore camera - looking back I’ve just invested in a DJI OSMO P3 and it now is my goto - so my GH6 I think will just become my studio interview type camera
It is not a true statement that "with software you can do anything" -- particularly when, as is the case with GH6, regarding its hardware not being able to support PDAF. The sensor and its accompanying image processor are already performing a formidable amount of computational wirk, with no remaining real estate on the sensor to place PDAF capability on it. PDAF is a function of both hardware and software.
So, is the GH6 worth to buy in 2024? I have the GH5 ii and to time it let me down on the autofocus. I know the autofocus is improoved on the GH6 but still dfd system. Im on a budget and I could buy the GH6 but afraid of the dfd autofocus that will let me down. Or am I mistaken on this one?
The GH6 is a wonderful camera, with poor autofocus. I bought a second used GH6 after the GH7 was released. I love both of my GH6 cams! If you need good autofocus skip the GH6.
@@harlemwoodstudios I bought the GH6 last friday and trade my Nikon Z sytem. Also got the Sirui nightwalker 24mm T1.2 and what a combo. The autofocus is good compared to my old GH5ii but shooting with the cine lens is a different school. No regrets. 😇
The biggest problem I have with the GH6 was their implementation of dynamic range boost. They got it right on the G9M2. I would also like more photo features, like real-time LUT, live-view composite, and better burst AF, which should be possible since with video it can use CAF up to 60 fps. For video, I'd say it's way more than I need. For photos (GH line is supposed to be a HYBRID system), it falls short. And sure, anything that improves AF performance is also good.
I own both the GH6 and the G9II...You are correct. The image and most of the features are outstanding and I won't be giving up this stellar of a camera anytime soon. The G9II does have better autofocus which is great and the image is very nice as well but the GH6 to me is still my A camera when shooting video. Thanks for Video!
Just got myself the metabones and the 18-35, so far its great for the video stuff I do But its getting heavy with that setup and full frame, other than for prices, is still tempting. But I would have to take downsides like no 4k120, no great ibis, no raw video possiblity with most and so on... I will stick around with MFT for a while and maybe when those things get changed which they certainly will, i'm gonna upgrade.
I own the gh6 and I bought the g9ii to get few shots I can’t get with the gh6. Anyway it’s a beautiful cinema camera. So I don’t mind the lack of autofocus
I started out with old practika. MTL series SLR so The first purchase after buying my GH6 was an M42 adapter. It’s pretty much had almost 100% vintage MF lenses attached for two years. I absolutely love it, my A7Sii has fairly crap AF also and that too sits with old 50mm f/1.8 off my practika or zeiss 29mm f/2.8 attached. GH6 beasts the daylight and the A7Sii takes care of night time. I love them both, last camera 📷 used AF on regular was my old Canon Rebel T7i so the PDAF issue was never one for me. The only downside to the GH6 is that it really hard for me to not use 4k 120 :D it’s just so damn gorgeous. I paid 1800 for the GH6 and knowing what I now know and f it were released tomorrow I would buy it again. I’ll have mine for decades ❤ Be interesting to see what panny drop firmware wise if anything but tbh if they never do, not worried. I do quite fancy some of the Sirui range of MF now though- the nightwalkers and a 24mm anamorphic would be sweet. If the camera was just solely for YT though I would just use my DJi pocket 3 mainly and generally do for that tbh. Have to admit though I would adore the GH6 in an ENG format, like an updated version of my very beloved ancient Sony HVR-Z1E ❤❤❤
you know Caleb, I just shot an over 1 hour rock concert, and the AF was spot on. Only got quickly slightly confused when the smoke machine obscured the rockers faces. with large white puffs of smoke. now tell me. If I had PDAF in the gh6, would the AF NOT been confused?
I tend to shoot with my s5 II more often than the gh6, when I don’t need slow motion, mostly because of the AF… but every time I shoot with the gh6 with an old lens I love the footage. Would love to try the new dji focus thing
When the gh6 came out it was the best M4/3 camera for video, 4K 120 F, IBIS, external recording. ... The autofocus is not good but many influencers here have also claimed "it doesn't matter as a professional videographer I don't use autofocus" and this also applies to the s5. Now that Panasonic is marketing its new PDAF cameras, it is suddenly important. I work with Panasonic and Sony cameras - I admit I feel very relaxed when shooting interviews and I don't have to worry about focus. I would be very happy if Panasonic gives the GH6 and S5 a very good integration of DJI's focus pro unit. It would be great if you could control the Lumix lenses automatically via the DJI Fokus pro without using a focus motor. But why would Panasonic do that, they would then sell fewer new cameras....
Saludos
I've been all in on the M43 format since the GH2 - mainly because I'm cheap. :) I own M43 lenses and am not willing to start over with full-frame - regardless how good the full frame stuff looks. The GH6 is an unbelievable good camera, and all of my lenses look fantastic.
I'm sure the GH6 stays for a while and with the fan and the CFExpress Card it has some unique features. Of course everybody would like to have the G9-II sensor but it is what it is. I think we don't get a GH6-II with just the new sensor because this time Panasonic waits for the next big thing that will make it a GH7. In the meantime the G9-II has almost everything needed for most people and Panasonic can live with a few people who desperately need a GH6 with the new sensor. Here is my speculation: I think the next big thing is RAW internal. It is possible that Nikon not just negotiated with RED for two years but also with Canon, Sony and Panasonic. They supported Nikon and agreed to make Redcode the number one RAW-Format. They delayed the R1, A7S4 and S1H-II and skipped the GH6-II in favor of the GH7. May be later this year we see the announcement of the Redcode-Alliance and new flagship cameras from everybody. This would be great for the Customers and it would keep all the key technologies in Japan.
A few years back when the GH5 was king everyone kept waiting for the GH6 but the standing debate was how could they squeeze more out of the Micro 4/3 system and people waited FOREVER for the Gh6, when they finally got it somehow they'd magically pulled more out of the micro 4/3 system, but even back in the gh4 days it was a product line that punched well above it's weight class and delivered way more than anyone could reasonably expect out of it. I think we don't hear much about the Gh6 in terms of support because how do you improve on perfection? All the go faster stripes or improved features people want for the camera would require adding new hardware i.e. releasing another camera, you can't firmware upgrade into phase detect auto focus or a larger sensor for better low light. I think we might eventually see a gh7 with some minor improvements but Lumix has shifted their attention over to full frame, and bringing all the awesome kick above the weight class features to those product lines. It kinda sucks for micro 4/3 users because they feel like the pour cousins who don't get any media attention, but the GH line was always loved for it's results not it's sex appeal.
Although I understand your points, would it be appropriate for Panasonic to neglect the development of GH6 while providing other cameras with the features that GH6 should already possess? GH6 should ideally have proxy recording as a standard feature, as it is the only camera among its peers that can record higher ProRes codecs internally. Realtime LUT is easily a feature that should have come to the GH6, and even the fact that it got external BRAW recording after the other cameras had me scratching my head. None of these cameras are cheap, and to think a company will take our money and decide to not improve it in any way should never be something that's just accepted.
Thanks Caleb, yes, I do feel abandoned by Panasonic. The GH6 is my last Panasonic. I do like it, but really? No update for the major delay when you hit record? That's what's crushing my spirit. I record onto CFExpress only... that delay has ruined so many shots...
I would not switch to full frame. If no GH7 will come this year, I will switch to Sony FX30 first. And then maybe completely to Sony after 14 years of Panny. 🤔
Not sure if Panasonic has abandoned GH6. I sold my GH6 and bought a G9 II. It's not just auto-focus. As a hybrid camera, the photo quality of low ISO was surprisingly bad. I do miss the GH6 flip screen, but G9 II is simply the true proper successor of GH5.
The GH6 had enough time between the GH5 to come out with PDAF. The GH series are great cameras for filmmakers and creators who don’t care about autofocus. Packed with so many features, it’s a shame that was the crux for the rest of us
They can't, because RED owns the patent for internal raw... The only way it would be possible is if RED allowed them to buy licenses for each camera... and let's face it, now that Nikon has purchased RED, I don't think that's ever gonna happen.
@@pragmaticfilmmaking yes, but then they realized it would make more financial sense to just buy them outright... So now it's only Nikon and RED that can do it.
I think the GH6 was pushed due to its demand. So many Lumix user's wanted it. Then it came out and the hype quickly faded. I think lumix wanted to bring the GH6 out with PDAF. Same as how they did with G9II and S5ii/x but felt forced to bring it out sooner. No doubt the GH7 will be a very good cameras and probably simpler to the G9ii with proxy internal recording or pro res.
I do feel the GH6 came out too early. Am I mad that I bought it? Hell no! It's a great friggin camera! Since I learned how to pull my own focus with the GH5, this wasn't a big deal, but when the G9II came out, I just moved the GH6 to a B Cam or Camera 2 and my slowmo camera. So when the S5II dropped, the GH6 moved to my Camera 3 in my tri-cam interview setup, so if they do updates or not, the GH6 will live on in my setup! Thanks for producing this video! The GH6 is still a badass!
At now I've GH6 and G9II (I sold the GH5M2 to get a GH6), each camera has its function, for video I don't need autofocus. Are you sure Lumix will release a GH7 or GH6M2 with PDAF? They are able to leave the GH line as it is now.
Panasonic did not abandon micro 4/3, they released the G9II. Clearly the GH7 will have PDAF. For those who are generally using manual focus, the GH6 is still great.
I'm a gh6 pre sale buyer and I've been very frustrated with this camera in some aspects, all the new features came less than one year after for all other lumix cameras, its almost Panasonic made us to buy it to lose money, the camera worth less than half we paid on the launching, it's a good camera, but after waiting 3 or 4 years from gh5 it's a very delusional camera.. :/
2:10 Sorry, but you got it completely wrong here. You can't just put Pdaf into a camera that has already been in development for a few years without it in mind. Lumix literally said that when they started developing the GH6 after the GH5 came out they considered the high frame rate shooting modes etc to be more important (could've either done that or pdaf). Cameras take a long time to develop and have to predict early on where the market is headed
Nah, Lumix are just a bit busy at the moment! They’re working on a lot of their lineup and rethinking it across the board too, they always listen so want to get it as near as right first time as possible. They’ll come good and launch these new iterations in due course. The GH7 or GH6ii will almost certainly be worth the wait, and it won’t only be PDAF, I feel pretty confident of this. And it’s not as if the GH6 isn’t a great camera already that hasn’t been around that long in the great scheme, after all Lumix cameras are usually a great leap in tech and as such have a longer shelf life especially when you think about the generous firmware updates that they often put out. I’m trying my best to be patient 🥴, taps finger nail drum role on table!! And i’m not a latest and greatest must have kind of person, my stills camera, the S1R still inspire me when I use it, but I admit i’m excited by the Lumix rethink. I’ve never regretted committing to both their m43 or ff systems, a sincere manufacturer in my personal opinion.
There's something special about the GH6, these bad boys are still selling new for $2,000 body only. I recently picked up a Sony A7Cii, not going lie Sony autofocus is sick but the image is too digital looking for my needs. Like yourself I have kept my GH6 around as a b-roll powerhouse. I mainly pair my GH6 with the Leica 12-35mm f/2.8. In my opinion the GH6S will drop with PDAF, a lower megapixel count to serve as a cinema cam. Great content thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Hey, i have a question and hopefully you can answer it. I could buy a gh5 with a 12-35mm f2.8 lens for 800 euro or buy a s5iix with two lenses (20-60 and 50f1.8) for 2600. I’m wondering if to start the gh5 is good enough or should i immediately invest in the s5 ? I now use a sony but want more color correction and i want 422 10bit now only 420 8bit wich sucks to grade. But the pictures are perfect so aint gonna sell my sony. I think the fx3 is to expensive
When I first bought the gh6 I stupidly just assumed it had the wireless live streaming that the gh5ii had, and live composite as well It’s like… why keep features cut from various cameras? It’s a dumb business model and now I’m starting to just hope these camera companies that do those kinds of practices just fail horribly soon. We need new camera manufacturers to put all these companies in their place *edit: I’m being extra, I mean really I just hope they upgrade the gh6 with firmware to not cut out features that should obviously be included
@@WalkingInWisdom I haven’t used it cause I only ever had a g85, gh5s, and now gh6, but from what I can gather it is a mode that can capture only new light to existing shots, in a way like long exposure but not overexposing just adding to it. To me it also reminds me of in video game rendering when you don’t clear the previous frame/buffer
@@TrepidJon Thanks for that. O need to research it to get my head clear. Tell me -- what, if anything, are you doing about our GH6 miserably short battery life? Are you using an alternative solution? I need to make a purchase of some kind because swapping out batteries during a shoot is a drag on creative enthusiasm!
@@UXXV No doubt. I certainly believe the GH5s was a near failure in the eyes of many, due to its lack of IBIS. What a crying shame. Now, that's got me wondering: is the GH6 M43 sensor slightly large, just like that of the GH5s sensor?
Hello, I have a question. Some bloggers mentioned a defect of this camera, that is, in low light environment and high light ratio, when shooting in vlog mode, green bars will appear in the picture. It seems that this problem is quite common, and Panasonic has not been able to completely solve this problem after upgrading the camera firmware. Some people say it is a CMOS problem. I don’t know how serious this problem is in practice. To be honest, I like this camera very much, but this problem involves the purity of the picture, which I am more concerned about. Have you done this test? Have you been troubled by this problem during use? I hope to hear the real voice, thank you very much!
As has been the case for a while, the GH6 has more AF than the BM cams. So if the GH6 is not useable, what should the BM owners do? haha They are all great cams.
Yes, so bad, because the colors coming from this camera are really great. My G9II has much better AF and better IBIS, but the image of my GH6 is better in my opinion.
The "trademark" GH6 streaking/stripping problem is an absolute no no though. Even if it does appear only in specific occasions. These occasions are still moments we'd need to capture something as pristine as the rest. And pretty unfixable in post. It's a problem for IQ and footage usability of course, and in a broader way, it's a problem the fact they couldn't fix it so for what it means in terms of how far they pushed their hardware and software data acquisition chain, from sensor to recording media. No better way to let us know that this thing is pretty flawed (immature) physically, very processing heavy, and on the edge of giving up at any moment. Hoping they keep more computational margin from a more mature/powerful sensor on a GH7 if they ever make one. Now when you see what they do on iphones... betting on heavy in-camera processing seems to be the definite winner compared to sensor system improvement. The more consumer oriented way.
I use the VILTROX DC-550 monitor and I have no problem recording in any format, open gate, even up to 4k 120fps. It must be a problem with your monitor configuration.
The GH6 does not have PDAF. Panasonic has nothing else to do with this camera. It still has many features that S52 does not have due to the MFT sensor. I am sure they are focusing on a GH6II or GH7 MFT is not done. If the GH6 had PDAF I would have gone from GH5II to GH6 instead of changing lens systems and moving to the S52.
Yes maybe. I don't care as I'm fine with the GH5 & GH5s. I think the GH7 will come out end of this year. Worst thing about the GH6 is the very piss poor battery life which I told Lumix at a UK trade show!
Battery life is dependant on what and how you shoot. If you want to record for hours continually then no camera will last all day, but I took a GH6 on a safari and 2 batteries lasted the whole day. From around 7:30am until around 5pm, just getting the shots I wanted.
Panasonic kinda kicked users in the nuts by following the GH6 closely with the GH7 feels like they needed to deliver the GH6 but then had some extra ideas and put them in the GH7 and cashed in again, GH7 should have just been the GH6
Streaks in video was unacceptable for a flagship video m43 camera. DFD autofocus was unacceptable. The shadow noise for photos is horrendous. Since it’s not on the L2 platform like the g9ii, engineering costs to keep it updated will be higher or it won’t even be possible, since the work would need to be adapted more for a different platform. It’s not rocket science why they discounted it so heavily in 2023. The market for this camera is a small set of people who don’t have the money for a full frame setup. I hope Panasonic releases some updates with stuff like usb camera streaming, but I’m not holding my breath. You could feel it during the announcement - the Gh6 was a big disappointment.
The sweeping generalization notion that "the market for" GH6 "is a small set of people who cannot afford" more expensive FF caneras is absolutely misleading, my Friend. There are distinct advantages for smaller sensor size, including significantly faster sensor readouts, resulting in a host of additional advantages -- not the least of which are twice the focal reach; super high speed data rates for professional performance video CODEC settings; nearly negligible rolling shutter artifacting when capturing fast moving subjects, or when the camera is panning quickly, etc., and much much nore. Our awe-inspiring 10-bit video recording GH6 model's price came in at a cost comparable to or greater than a good number of Full-Frame cameras [e.g., Sony A7iii] and often outclassing their FF same-priced counterparts in video features and performance.
GH6 ... I had, I sold. Autofocus!!! ... My hobby is movie ... A great camera if you do not use autofocus. I bought a used S5IIX from an Australian man in Firenze ... Absolutely great camera ... BUT S5IIX have some little problem ... 1. do not use quick memory as CFexpress B ... sigh ... external USB is a bad idea ... connected cable are always a bad idea ... internal M.2 will be the future ... 2. a BIG ERROR in project ... Why do not add to the left selector two or more option for video and S&Q, so can add to the right selector a C4 and C5 ... it will cost very little to production line ... more click on left selector only ... and in left side can add VIDEO1 and VIDEO2 or STILL 2 so you can preselect c1, c2 .... FOR day OR night .... OR OTHER OPTION ... 3. OTHER BIG ERROR in project, but this very expensive for production, it is ... 4/3 mount must be converted and unified in L-mount so all lens can be exchanged ... aps-c or pixel/pixel on S5iiX ca be perfectly usable for movie with 4/3 lens, Pana, Sigma, Olympus ... ... SONY teach ... bye
I find it funny that users are more likely to blame themselves than the camera company. Panasonic is at fault for not changing to PD af. They dug in their heels and said it would hurt image quality which was a lie because now the G9 and S52 have it and low and behold it doesn't. They took forever to release the GH6 and they had more than ample opportunity to add it. These companies make these type of decisions for their own selfish reasons. They often let cameras languish because they don't want to spend more R&D and instead of discontinuing it they'll see how many more years they can still sell it.
Actually NOT a lie that PDAF technically produces an inferior image. Realistically, most people don’t care, because they would rather have the PDAF than do earn a practical skill. Practically, most content is for UA-cam and tik tok, so no one is going to fret if the quality is indistinguishable from the rest of the videos online… Also, you can’t say they don’t spend in R&D when they literally produced three PDAF cameras recently, all with advance video recording features… 🤔
@@Superz3ro What do you mean "technically"? Are you regurgitating what Panasonic is saying or have you actually seen a difference? I'd challenge you to create a video showing us this difference. Both Canon and Sony produce many PDAF cameras for many years and no one complains about the loss of image quality and now Panasonic does.
It's an outdated camera. All the full frame shooters told you guys this years ago. No working AF and it's just outdated. M4/3 was not future proof at all. S35 and full fame has taken over. The Gh6 is also a spec camera. The S1H has a better image compared to the GH6, easily.
What happened? GH6 is the worst selling GHx for a decade. A single production run. No PDAF was a heresy. The streaking, unusuable DR style sensor another disaster.
Agreed this guy just talks about lumix cams but what does he actually do? What documentaries or comercial work lol. Hell post a quick clip of his buddy walking in a park by his house but what actual film making does he do?!
The fact that it is relegated to a B or C camera mainly due to lack of PDAF by many, really says it all about the perception in the amateur industry…
We still rock the Lumix GH5II with a collection of Leica DG and M.Zuiko Pro glass, more than adequate… Would not hesitate to purchase another GH5II if it breaks or is stolen, regardless of the new cameras released since…
🤔
I am not a pro with many cameras but to me my GH6 is simply amazing. I am still amazed after 1 year and a half when I look at the footage I come up with. I am still exploring timelapse, stop frame animation, macro photography, slow motion video, and I get as excited as when I got it. It is one hell of a camera. Especially if you compare with other brands. For this price you get plenty and a solid built workhorse. And seriously the AF thing and streaking issue is way overblown.
The flippy screen is so well designed...and the button layout and deep grip are perfection. It just feels solid overall. Its a DAMN shame this monster of a cam doesn't have PDAF.
yeah i saw a great deal in a vintage camera shop in japan, selling the g9ii for 1250usd, so i quickly put my gh6 on sale for the same price and effectively upgraded myself for free.
i really miss the ergonomics, cfexpress speeds, and audio quality of the gh6 though:
i don't know if im hallucinating; but the video images from the gh6 actually somehow feel more "cinematic" and deeper than that of the g9ii which has a more harsh and digital look. anyone feels the same?
GH6 all day. It really is one of a kind. I have held the G9ii and I didn’t like the ergo or the dual sd card limitations after owning a GH6. I’m sorry you’re missing those features.
autofocus is useless for good art. haha peace
@@nickalot that Is because the G9II is a marketing camera and the Gh6 is a total beast of a cinema camera. It's a crime what they are doing to this beast. If you want to be a UA-camr pick the G9II, if you want to be a filmmaker, pick the Gh6. simple.
@@nepex20 What if i want to be both a youtuber and a filmmaker? Should i buy both cameras?
What happened to the GH6? Brother, i'm still sending it with the GH5 😅
And for the majority of any type of video a man is making, that Gh5 is going to look just as good with the write film techniques.
@@RyanTrent Especially with the improving DJI lidar focus system. Older cameras will rise back to glory.
Oh no! That DJI LIDAR system's woefully expensive to add reliable autofocus to a $2300 camera such as GH6! $1000USD or more!?
I appreciate you saying this bro and keep up the great work.
awesome!! yeah i love the image of the gh6 and the autofocus convenience of the s5ii for sure haha
Sony spent several years training people that everyone needed the best eye-AF. Especially landscape photographers...
Hey @MartySender5539 what steps do you employ to get decent autofocus reliability on your GH6?
Is part of the secret, to set stay far, far away from selecting AF-C? Thanks
Agree 100% but Panny has abandoned it so I wouldn't expect much.. too bad it is my favorite lumix camera.
The GH6 is my favorite cam!
i think it is funny that we get mad at Panasonic for this problem but like Sony does it every 3 months.
That being said, I do agree we should be gumpy and grumpy with both. Let's slow down release cycles now that everything is incredible. ONLY make a new one when we have something worth doing :)
That being said. No clue what the hell they'd have to make to get me off the S5ii haha
haha for sure!! and 💯 right on that everything is incredible right now!
☝🏽🤓
I love the GH6 body, a new PDAF sensor with 4K 240p and 5.8K 60p Is what I want in the GH7
I'm intrigued over the demands for super high frame rates at ever higher video resolutions -- What on earth are people hoping to accomplish with such powers, film a bumblebee in super slow motion then call it a day? 🤣
Seriously, I would more readily support a demand for a decently spec'd
· PDAF
· Built-in ND filter
· Better battery life via getting rid of the enclosed battery chamber so as to accommodate larger batteries.
· Dual USB-C ports
· Lower-cost dual XLR adaptor
@@WalkingInWisdom 4K 240p is fantastic for sports, autosports, and surfing videos which I personally love shooting. Think of high frame rate as “temporal resolution.” instead of 8K resolution per frame I need more temporal resolution per second.
@@fansofER OK, well played.
Just putting PDAF and nothing else in the camera would be kinda a let down (it still would be nice) but a let down to any and all current GH6 owners
i had to give a shout out to our ep!
@@CalebHoover 🙏🏻gonna have to do another super soon! Also updated the thumbnail 🤫
I don't know if it's that simple since the GH6 has a different sensor that's not from Sony unlike their newer PDAF cameras, so maybe implementing PDAF is not as easily done if they were to use this sensor on a possible GH7 and if they use a Sony sensor the image quality would certainly be different
If GH7 comes out I’ll probably get another GH6 at a great discount!!!
😂😂. Sure Lumix can have the GH7 do in camera editing. It will edit your videos for you 😂😂😂😂
I think as soon as the streaking issue was discussed, the GH6 was done.
Waste of money to keep upgrading… if you learn the camera you can make it look like nearly anything
100%
So true
The big feature of the GH6 for me is open-gate 5.7K which gives a full 4K vertical video.
Still have it, still use it
so good!
Not selling off my Gh6 s.🎉Thank You
I have 2 GH6 cams now. I am keeping them.
Totally agree. Still going with my GH5 and GH6, enough for me
I use the focus limiter on my GH6 and I find it makes the autofocus very useable for the work I do. It is a little bit of a pain to use and it certainly is not useable when time is limited.
I purchased the gh6 for the 10bit and better AF than my old g85 - and I also have invested in the MFT glass including the 42.5 Noctricron - so changing to FF isn’t an option for me - I think Panasonic could and should invest in upgrading the software to add file sharing and Phase detect AF - Olympus added superior AF other MFT cameras - with software you can do anything - I won’t be buying anymore camera - looking back I’ve just invested in a DJI OSMO P3 and it now is my goto - so my GH6 I think will just become my studio interview type camera
that 42.5 is legit one of the best lenses!
No regrets. 😇
@@eppietimisela7118 Congratulations! You definitely have a powerful camera that can handle professional gigs.
FYI: The G9ii automatically does DR Boost for every ISO and without the noise issues and without needing to shoot at ISO 2000.

How's the dynamic range on the GH6 compared to the G9ii?
I agree. Good to hear it. Been using my GH6 over my g9ii whenever I don't need the auto focus for a shoot.
Well it is too expensive compared to full frame
I took the extra $500 Lumix offer to trade it in for the G9II. So with that $500 and the trade in at Roberts Camera the G9II was only about $400.
Damn how do I do this?
@@TrepidJon It was a short lived offer back in February

Just got myself the metabones and the 18-35, so far its great for the video stuff I do
But its getting heavy with that setup and full frame, other than for prices, is still tempting. But I would have to take downsides like no 4k120, no great ibis, no raw video possiblity with most and so on... I will stick around with MFT for a while and maybe when those things get changed which they certainly will, i'm gonna upgrade.

It was the mistake on Panasonic's part to not use "Phase Detect" in the GH6 that sunk it. As Arnold would say "Big Mistake."

Still dreaming of a S1hii with ND’s & XLR
I own the gh6 and I bought the g9ii to get few shots I can’t get with the gh6. Anyway it’s a beautiful cinema camera. So I don’t mind the lack of autofocus
haha! Great minds think alike. I literally had scheduled this video in my cue for today. 😎
that’s amazing! we should have collabed on it dang it! maybe another one sometime soon 💯
I’ll have mine for decades ❤
Be interesting to see what panny drop firmware wise if anything but tbh if they never do, not worried.
Here is my speculation:
I think the next big thing is RAW internal. This would be great for the Customers and it would keep all the key technologies in Japan.
i like your thinking on this! i definitely think the future is heading in the right direction with this line.
Dunno bro, I work with the GH6 for two years now and the AF works just fine (as long as u know how to manage it)
Where are the best tutorials on GH6 autofocus management?
With DJI's Focus Pro (Lidar) this camera is nothing but a beast.
Packed with so many features, it’s a shame that was the crux for the rest of us
I think that Lumix can add internal Braw feature to in GH6. Because GH6 has got a fan system and has got a CF Express slot. Lumix can do it...
I believe!
They can't, because RED owns the patent for internal raw... The only way it would be possible is if RED allowed them to buy licenses for each camera... and let's face it, now that Nikon has purchased RED, I don't think that's ever gonna happen.
@@StudiotekWasn’t Nikon arguing against the patent?
@@pragmaticfilmmaking hence why Nikon bossed up on Red with the full takeover
@@pragmaticfilmmaking yes, but then they realized it would make more financial sense to just buy them outright... So now it's only Nikon and RED that can do it.
Still using my GH6 until the GH7 releases with PDAF, then i will upgrade and just keep it as a B-cam.
Im Happy with my GH6 and i can do BRAW im MFT all in with the PD Movie or the DJI focus its a killer cam...oh it has a fan pun intended
Panasonic did not abandon micro 4/3, they released the G9II. Clearly the GH7 will have PDAF. For those who are generally using manual focus, the GH6 is still great.
How good is the peaking on the GH6?
Love this camera!
for real!
Just give me the tech from G9ii in the GH6 body and I will buy it the day it’s released!!
I own both right now and wish I could just melt them together in to one camera!
At least they didn't dump it as fast as the GH5S.
PDAF is a direct response to the GH6's lacklustre sales. We wouldn't have those feature without the GH6's not so great at C-AF.
Cameras take a long time to develop and have to predict early on where the market is headed
just wished they released this with the new PDAF
I love the GH6, I might even buy another.
Mine is for sale
1. The consumermarket is smartphone, smartphone, smartphone.
2. Finaly Pana switched to PDAF
3. Now you know.
When I first bought the gh6 I stupidly just assumed it had the wireless live streaming that the gh5ii had, and live composite as well
It’s like… why keep features cut from various cameras? It’s a dumb business model and now I’m starting to just hope these camera companies that do those kinds of practices just fail horribly soon.
We need new camera manufacturers to put all these companies in their place
*edit: I’m being extra, I mean really I just hope they upgrade the gh6 with firmware to not cut out features that should obviously be included
interesting thoughts for sure! i definitely think some firmware will come for the gh6 just probably not what everyone really wants 🤷♂️
What, pray tell, does "live composite" feature in GH5ii do?
@@WalkingInWisdom I haven’t used it cause I only ever had a g85, gh5s, and now gh6, but from what I can gather it is a mode that can capture only new light to existing shots, in a way like long exposure but not overexposing just adding to it.
My G9II has much better AF and better IBIS, but the image of my GH6 is better in my opinion.
sad things is way better to get g9 II instead of gh6, its such a big deal this new af technology
I can't use my extenal monitor went i use "open gate" the screen is black . Is it normal ?
Worst thing about the GH6 is the very piss poor battery life which I told Lumix at a UK trade show!
it definitely goes fast!
Battery life is dependant on what and how you shoot. If you want to record for hours continually then no camera will last all day, but I took a GH6 on a safari and 2 batteries lasted the whole day. From around 7:30am until around 5pm, just getting the shots I wanted.
@@pragmaticfilmmaking Compared to the GH5 & GH5s the battery life is poor.
If you simply leave the camera switched on, not recording the battery still drains super fast
@@jdleschw No, I shoot in 4K. Its just dissapointing battery life for the GH6, lets hope the GH7 is much better.
If you have felt the need to address this issue a few times that answer is YES.
Panasonic kinda kicked users in the nuts by following the GH6 closely with the GH7 feels like they needed to deliver the GH6 but then had some extra ideas and put them in the GH7 and cashed in again, GH7 should have just been the GH6
3 years' difference in GH5 to GH6 release dates [with GH5s and GH5ii in between] seems screwy to you, eh? Explain if you can...
I did just explain
The people that can't make GH series work was a skill issue all along.
4/3 mount must be converted and unified in L-mount so all lens can be exchanged ... aps-c or pixel/pixel on S5iiX ca be perfectly usable for movie with 4/3 lens, Pana, Sigma, Olympus ... ... SONY teach ... bye
IMO….it should’ve had two SD cards and phase detect AF.
DJI FOCUS ....game over even better in low light that any g9 and the rest lets talk
Practically, most content is for UA-cam and tik tok, so no one is going to fret if the quality is indistinguishable from the rest of the videos online…
Also, you can’t say they don’t spend in R&D when they literally produced three PDAF cameras recently, all with advance video recording features…
🤔
@@Superz3ro What do you mean "technically"? Are you regurgitating what Panasonic is saying or have you actually seen a difference? I'd challenge you to create a video showing us this difference. Both Canon and Sony produce many PDAF cameras for many years and no one complains about the loss of image quality and now Panasonic does.
The G9 and S5ii pdaf
It's an outdated camera. All the full frame shooters told you guys this years ago. No working AF and it's just outdated. M4/3 was not future proof at all. S35 and full fame has taken over. The Gh6 is also a spec camera. The S1H has a better image compared to the GH6, easily.
What happened? GH6 is the worst selling GHx for a decade. A single production run. No PDAF was a heresy. The streaking, unusuable DR style sensor another disaster.
GH6 is a lost soul and a firmware update is absolutely required. Ok it doesn’t have autofocus but whatever so much good MF glass out there anyway.
Oh wow..almost 9 minutes of talking about... nothing really.
Agreed this guy just talks about lumix cams but what does he actually do? What documentaries or comercial work lol. Hell post a quick clip of his buddy walking in a park by his house but what actual film making does he do?!
Gh6 was not really that good, Gh5 its still good. If it is that good as you say in the video, its should not be B camera and you should use it daily
