Lawn Leveling Lawn Do's and Dont's - How to Topdress a Lawn

- I am sharing the do's and dont's of leveling a lawn. I have some experience at topdressing a lawn. If I could do it over again, I would do things differently. I recommended leveling the dirt as much as possible before sodding or seeding. That will help greatly and reduce the amount of leveling needed once the lawn is established. I show you some of the tools used for leveling including this rake (affiliate link) amzn.to/3pIxFnZ and this compost spreader (affiliate link) amzn.to/3Db4RaN
The ecolawn 250 is another tool that could make this job much easier. I go over the pros and cons or using topsoil or sand. I also talk about the proper time to topdress a lawn. I demonstrate the tools as I work on my own lawn. Enjoy and leave a comment!

I used that rake, with a 50/50 sand / top soil mix. Also mixed in grub killer, seed, some manure, fertilizer/weed killer. Bermuda grass. Big improvement on my new house, 3 year old lawn with poor soil, bumps, holes and high/low areas. Greened up, thick grass, no weeds, ankle breaker holes filled in, grub problem fixed. I will do again for next few years.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm hoping it will be a big Improvement for me also
my right ear loved this
Its therapeutic in April...not in Mid July...😂
Thanks again trying to level yard after replacing sewer line
I made a drag to pull with my lawn mower. Just a couple of 2x4s
That's probably helpful for a large area. I saw some large metal mats for sale but they are a little expensive
My backyard was totally destroyed by the crew the insurance company sent to remove a tree that fell and hit the house. It's like trench warfare in some spots. Some holes are ankle-deep. Some are halfway to the knee. I need to get it leveled back off. I was thinking about getting an extra large tiller and then just spreading it out. I probably need to get some soil over to my mom's house where a tree was once removed. I will check out the academy
I use a tiller on bare dirt before throwing sod out. Rake out a spot the size of the sod and get it level with surrounding dirt, not above. A year later it will all grow in level, minimum bumps.
I like that strategy
I only hear sound out of one ear for most of your videos lately. The part about the conference sounds normal but the video itself only come out of my right ear.
Can this same technique be used for leveling St. Augustine grass? Seems like you would have to almost scalp the yard to be able to see what you are doing.
Hard work, okay.
I did the sod thing with my centipede back yard but it seems to be taking forever to spread out
I don't think centipede spreads quite as fast as Bermuda
I feel you pain....but i am willing to do it
Me too
I have a zoysia/fescue blend in my lawn. If I wanted to use the rake, should I mow really short? I usually cut my lawn at 4" here in Georgia. Would it make sense to scalp it at about 1.5-2"
Did I hear that Coach Nick Saban will be there?
If it makes you feel any better I had mine harley raked and I still need to sand level even with cutting with a rotary mower. Unfortunately the sod is never cut even depth and you loose dirt in the process of installing it. I'm convinced there is not a perfect solution. I haven't tackled mine yet because most of my ruts need a soil/compost/sand mix and it's about impossible to find that in my area unless you buy it in the bulk ton bags and there must be gold flakes mixed in with it because they sure do love it 😂
Hey what was the distance between each row that a filled up spreader could do trying to determine how much work for 2500 square feet
You definitely need to rent the unit for a weekend and get another load of sand. Lol. I leveled my 2k of turf a few years ago and yep… it was work. Yours is way way bigger than that. Lol
I'm not going to do the whole yard. Just until I run out of sand and that might just be good enough
I've been thinking about Harley raking my Bermuda lawn that's bumpy with a sanding soil. But I'm scared it going to tear my lawn up to much
A Harley rake will get all the old v twin motorcycles out there also
Trying to diversify my audience
Is it suggested to mow prior to leveling ? " Just hard work" 😂😆😂 👍
I think mowing the grass short is helpful
This is the job you should NOT do it in MAY-AUGUST 😂
That temperature makes all the difference…
