  • An exciting day discovering the UNESCO, heritage listed, Georgetown, Penang.
    We take the local "Rapid Penang" bus and explore the Chowrasta Market area, devour a foodie feast at our favourite dim sum restaurant , meet the beautiful Aunty Chew at the end of the Clan Jetties, enjoy one of her natural honey and passionfruit drinks, take a boat ride in the Malacca Straits and have so much fun at the (crazy) Upside Down Museum😂
    There is so much to see, eat and do in the incredible Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia!

    Loved your mention of listening to an audiobook about the place you're visiting, I do that too! What are you listening to about Penang? I'm visiting in April and would love to know. My last trip to Osaka I listened to Shogun, and visited Osaka castle, where there was a statue of one of the characters mentioned in the book! It really makes a place (and a story) come alive

      Ok😁... It is a little bit trashy but I still really enjoyed it lol...The Penang Collection by Clare Flynn...narration is a bit jarring to start with. It's set in the 1940's in Penang. It's 3 books but one flows on from the other with a different characters perspective. I love reading about the place we are visiting so much! Really makes you feel a connection😊👍

    Pinang is the original name shortened from Pulau (island) Pinang (from Pinang tree) just like Malacca from ( Melaka tree). Penang is the anglicised name for it. Pinang the a has "Ah" sound so its pronounced differently. Its in Bahasa the same for farmasi, kopi and tarik. If you see different spelling its usually because its in Malay. Some places have only English names like Georgetown founded by Francis light in honor of King George.

      @@vintagefoodfarm The Brits they dont know how to say Malay words . They also introduce latin alphabets because prior to the Brits the Malays use Jawi script, a modified arabic script with additional consonants that doesn't exist in Arabic letters. You may have seen it around and it isn't arabic rather Malay in Jawi script. Jawi is taught in religious schooling as private paid lessons but public school is free its mandatory to use the English abcedary same as Australians i suppose.

    The genuinely friendly Malaysian people are a wonderful advertisement for tourism to their country, I can't think of anywhere quite the same.
    Cheap, delicious Dim Sum, I'm officially jealous. I do prefer the crunchy brown chilli oil though, not the red puree of chilli they seem to serve there and in some other nearby countries. What percentage of the time would you try a new place to eat versus going somewhere you already know will serve good food?
    If you like reading about places you're travelling take a look at the author Han Suyin. She has written both fiction and non fiction set in Malaya (as it was at the time), China, India and numerous other countries. Excellent books.

      Thank you so much! I need a new book in 2 days 😁👍90% of the time it is new food 😁👍😋We can't not try anything that looks delicious or maybe a bit scary or where there are a lot of locals 😊Malaysia is a very special place for sure!

    Lol that leave is Pomelo plant leave. The other is daun kesum, or laksa leaves, are also called Vietnamese Mint or Vietnamese Coriander. They are lemony, spicy and tangy and a must for authentic laksa.

    That was so interesting, you make it look easy travelling around by the buses. I am now craving that passionfruit drink and dim sum. What was the book you were reading? I often do that read a fiction book about the place I am travelling in, particularly good to do in Vietnam

    • @vintagefoodfarm
      @vintagefoodfarm  6 днів тому +1

      The dim sum and the passionfruit drink were both incredible!😋😋😋 I love reading fiction in the country we are in! Even if you don't get much reading done it is nice to read when you get home and keep the holiday going. The book is actually 3 books called the Penang Collection by Clare Flynn. They are a series and they are a little bit trashy but I really enjoyed them 🥰 So happy you enjoyed the video 😁👍

    In Malaysia it is usually goat not lamb unless you buy it from the supermarket. In the wet market it is usually goat and it is more gamey than lamb but just as delicious

      Yes😁👍 Very. We saw that a lot of people had strollers and prams which is a big difference to Vietnam and Cambodia. It is also very safe. There are lots of young families from Malaysia and other countries visiting. Just make sure your hotel has a lift 😁👍
