    Great! Very helpful. The best explanation / demo of the mobius I’ve seen. One question: Let’s say you want a thimble or ring in that (mobius) end. Can you pull the mobius “eye” open big enough to pass over a thimble or ring? I guess it depends on the size of rope, thimble / ring.

      Hey thanks for the comment! For a Mobius Brummel splice, you can use a thimble to measure how big to make your eye at the very beginning and then test it throughout the process until you're ready to taper, then install the thimble. For a ring, you'd definitely want to splice that first with the locking brummel, and then splice the other side with a thimble + mobius brummel. That's unless your ring is small enough to pass through the locking eye that is. The only caveat would be that the ring would have to be at similar working load limit to the rope so that its not the weak point.

    This makes a LOT more sense than some of the other 12-strand splice videos I've seen. Thank you.

    Clear and easy to follow. Sometimes content creators ask for suggestions. I have one. It's just for the tapering, how to work out the interval for the number of strands in the cover or core and number of threads to pick out and trim off. But like the other gent is asking. Only a small point but might be useful to many. Thanks.

    Better use a closed, one piece thimble to avoid compression and strands fraying/cutting

    Full Fid length = 21 x diameter? - So 42x for mooring and 75x for standing rigging?

    Hi I just had a question about what the diameter was of the Sea-Strand rope, and what were the measurements on the fid that you used?

    Hello good day sir. Would like to know,that after completing the splice, do we have to lock stich the end where the tail submerged? Please suggest to me sir. I'm a bosun on the ship and I'm interested to know . Thanks for hearing me.

      The Brummel lock replaces the need to lock stitch. Note, neither ads strength to the splice when under load.

    Would you recommend whiplock on bigger diameters? i. e. 12 mm and above?

    • @E-rigging
      @E-rigging  3 роки тому +1

      Good question! Depending on what rope and splice you perform on that rope. If you perform either of these splices correctly on any diameter of SeaStrandX, the locked eye will keep the splice from coming undone even under low or no tension. A whiplock stitch can keep the bury length permanently embedded in the cover. However, doesn't necessarily weaken or put your splice at risk of unraveling at any diameter.

    I'm so useless at tapering...any advice? For some reasons I end up cutting the same strand I previously cut. Also, how do you calculate to always have exactly a 2 or 1 or 5m rope? Could be another video 😁 I'm trying to splice a couple of 2m ropes but always 5cm short, frustrating.

    • @E-rigging
      @E-rigging  2 роки тому +2

      *For tapering,* start cutting strands at the base of the cover and work your way to the end of the dead end.
      *For correct measuring,* using the appropriate fid is your first step. To achieve an exact length of finished cord with eye splices, you have to allow for extra rope to be consumed in making the splices. For each splice, the length of extra rope required is equal to 1.5 fid lengths + half the circumference for each eye you want to make. For instance, If you want a 2m finished length with one 14cm eye, you'll need to cut the rope 2m + 1.5 fid lengths + 7cm. If you're making an eye sling with _two eyes_ on either end of the same rope, you would cut 2m + 3 fid lengths + 14cm.
      Hope that helps!

    I would like to do the mobius brummel splice on the end of my winch line. I was hoping to include an abrasion sleeve but it looks like that would make it quite difficult!?!?

    • @E-rigging
      @E-rigging  2 роки тому +2

      Great idea! Depends on what type of sleeve you're looking at. With a loose sleeve, just slide it on before you start your splice. Don't forget to size it correctly since the buried dead end will make the neck of the splice gradually thicker the closer it gets to the eye.

    What is the termination efficiency of this splice?

    • @E-rigging
      @E-rigging  3 роки тому +1

      Both of these splices, executed correctly, maintain nearly 100% termination efficiency in SeaStrandX.

    Is it possible to put a thimble in a Mobius Brummel splice?

    • @E-rigging
      @E-rigging  2 роки тому

      Hey Doug! Yeah, as long as you get the measurement for the eye correct you can slip the thimble in right before tapering and burying.

      @@E-rigging Thanks! I just tried this on a topping lift (3mm line) I was making for a friend's boat. I 'rehearsed it on a spare piece of line first and got it to work. I'm sure I could get better at judging the size of the eye if I did it more often. 8-) Your video was super-helpful thanks for making it!!

      You do a Mobius Brummel splice and bury about 15 inches.
