    I have a Zoeller M57 that is 16 years old. I replaced the switch after 10 years and I clean out my sump every few years. Plumbers that don’t clean out a sump before installing a new pump are really doing a disservice to their customer. IMHO :)

    Hey Steve the weep hole on the base of the pump is designed to keep air lock from occurring inside the pump itself. A 3/16 hole should still be drilled between the check valve and threaded pvc discharge pipe to prevent air lock. Drill it just above the threaded pvc fitting at a 45 degree angle is how I was taught.

    They don't make things like they used to, my parents had a 1950's Rapidayton pump in their basement that lasted until 2005. It was the original pump they put in with the drainage system shortly after the house was built in 1953!

    Thanks for the video Steve.
    Replaced my 12yr old zoeller pump with a new zoeller 3 yrs ago for a faulty float switch. When i purchased my new pump I also purchased a new float switch and installed it on the old pump for a backup pump since it was still functional. Was surprised to see no water activated backup pump in the customers well! Saved my ass a few times during power outages.

    We live next to a flood plane near the creek, so we always have water around foundation cellar. A Flotec pedestal sump pump has been running strong for over 18+ years. It runs at least once an hour all year. When we have a torrential storm it runs every 20 seconds. The only thing I have done is spray the float shaft with dry film lubricant every year to keep it moving smoothly. I have a Zoeller sitting on the floor right next to it as a backup. Maybe I should get a better backup unit.

    The Zoller pump itself is ok, whereas the micro switch is substandard. The switch will carry voltage but will not carry amperage (load) . The switch contacts get burnt by the amperage load. I bypassed the internal switch and installed a tether float switch, which gives a longer run time. Its sad when a manufacturer knows they have a problem and will not live up to the problems they have created. Had the same problem with a Califfie zone valve end switch.

    Had a call from my mother that the Wayne I installed 25 years ago wasn’t working. She was running down the list of replacements including Zoeller, but she ended up rocking the float back and forth a couple times, and the Wayne has been pumping reliably since.
    I ordered a new switch for it, but if it really craps out, I’ll recommend a Liberty for a replacement.

  • @losferwords100
    @losferwords100 3 роки тому +5

    It's the float switches on the Zoeller's that fail. They either won't turn on or they won't turn off and will fry up the motor as a result unless you manually unplug it when there's no water. Shame because the pump itself is built like a tank and would otherwise last forever if it weren't for the cheap float switches they put in them especially on the newer ones. They make rebuild kits for the switches but have never had them last long after a rebuild, it's better to just replace the whole pump.
    I put a new Zoeller in my house also in 2018 and it's still going strong. I also have a backup Liberty pump in case the power goes out. The Zoeller I had before then lasted over 10 years before the switch inevitably burnt out on it.

  • @jimwesteven2023

    Tramco makes a non-submerged pump that's designed to last for decades, and by all indications meets that goal, with both the motor and the float switch above water. They have a price tag to match - multiple thousands just for the parts.
    Point being, I really love their float switch setup, which looks like it'll last forever. It's a stainless steel ball float attached to a solid metal rod that extends out of the pit to the float switch itself, which is far above ground level. The whole works is held steady by a custom metal plate covering the pit. However it's done, switches simply last longer when they're not under the water the whole time.

    I have two Zoeller sump pumps one in the basement and one in the wellhouse. Both pumps have been going strong for over 38 years now with zero issues. The only maintenance is to check the pump’s strainer for debris. If the switch is crapping out. The pump's HP might be too big for the incoming water and is cycling too much and burning out the switch.

      what’s the purpose of a sump hole? what would happen if they didn’t have one?

    • @TurboDieselFury
      @TurboDieselFury 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheUserNameNoOneHas The purpose of a sump hole is to channel any water that rises up under your basement floor or around the outside of your foundation wall into the sump pit where a pump can pump it out. Water that rises up under your floor can hydraulically lift the floor and crack it and then the water will continue to rise and flood the basement. It’s just better to place your footings and basement above the absolute high water point. Some builders dig so damn deep that your floor is below the ground water line and your sump pump never stops running. Like trying to empty a lake! Ridiculous!

I mean it’s barely a foot deep with the bottom being quartzite (I bet the previous owner had to pay for the bits needed to have the pit bored, as quartzite WILL cut glass). At least I HAVE a sump pit, as during the Year of the Wet Summer (2011), not only was my pump running every five minutes, three neighbors without sumps lost their carpet and most of the wood in their basements to seepage due to the elevated water table.

    Try ion pumps. Better than all of the mechanical pumps.

    This problem has been going on for 20 years. They don't seem to care. I also switched to Liberty with no problems and will never buy Zoeller again.

      agree the zoellers have been an issue for awhile with those switches. the pump motor draws a lot of current especially on a start up and that little switch cant handle that,

    The Zoeller pumps from the supply house is a better grade then the big box stores

      He isn’t buying them at big box stores. He mentioned the Zoeller rep that works with the local supply house is bouncing warranty claims on pumps that should be covered.

      The supply houses usually sell the standard and premium models. It comes down to what you ask for.

    Hey Steve! Our hot water is foamy and has a chemical smell, glycol never put in system, heat and hot water went out a month or so ago and someone came out serviced the boiler and replaced the nozzle etc but they couldn’t find the problem, also when the boiler was out there was a little seeping of water from the domestic hot water coil could this cause this? Thanks!

      LOL! Steve cracks me up! I think the translation is that he is sympathetic...but he has stated in his "coffee chats" that he has to be careful about guess-diagnosing problems that are not in his service area, and that he would prefer that you address the problem with another tech in your own locality. It takes an actual site-visit to do this properly. At least, that is my opinion. (Good advice about women though).

      It is a "Work Horse" I saw it on the horn button. I think that the spacious interior amplifies what sounds like a diesel engine.

      I think Steve said the engine was an "International 275" at some point; sounds a little like a Cummins...

    Steven: I want to buy a spare sump pump and go ahead and put the pipe in so I can change it out quick in an emergency because mine runs a lot certain times of the year. I'm looking at the Liberty. What's your opinion of the 2 types of floats?
