How Anyone Can Easily Adjust A VCR With No Special Tools

  • WARNING: Be careful working on devices when they are plugged in.
    This video describes how to adjust the picture on a VCR that has no, or inoperable, outside head/tape alignment controls. You can try pushing the channel up or down buttons on the front of the machine first, while a tape is playing, as that may be the tracking control and might fix the picture. This happens to be a Panasonic Omnivision but other brands may be similar. The whole process is very simple and I only needed one small phillips, and one small standard, screw driver. You will need a way to monitor the picture, by having the VCR plugged into a television, or in my case, a computer. This is also a good opportunity to clean the heads and other parts of the unit while the top is removed, but be sure to unplug it from the power source first.

    I found this trick soon after I first got my VCR in the 70s. One warning - always mark the original positions of the poles before adjusting so if you screw it up you can return the them to the original positions. Otherwise you might have a good picture with pre-recorded tape but the tapes you record will be difficult to play in other VCRs.

    I would not recommend adjusting the alignment unless you are certain that is the problem. If you do tty adjusting it, note the original positions of the guide rollers first and only turn it a bit. Noise at the bottom indicates right hand roller, noise at the top indicates left hand roller. I would try cleaning the heads first by playing a new blank or good condition (not played much, been kept in box) tape all the way through. They don't usually go out of alignment on their own, it's more likely to be a worn pinch roller

    There actually should be a soft adjustment for alignment on all VCR's, using the channel +/- buttons. I have this same VCR, and that usually did the trick, until a few weeks ago, that is...
    However, I used your method and opened it up to adjust the alignment that way. But there's something wrong with mine, because it looks like scrambled cable channels, and no sound was present when I'd tinker with both alignment methods, they just didn't seem to make a difference. Maybe it's a video card, or something.
    My last option is to just replace it. (I feel like I see that same model every time I go to the thrift store, and they're not more than $10)

    I think these tapes were recorded from a vcr with the tape guides misaligned, for sure. But, if the tapes were recorded on the same VCR, it is valid to make this adjustment "in luck". The problem is when using tapes from other different sources, the problem will continue. It is best to use an oscilloscope for fine tuning that is able to fix images of all tapes (especially pre-recorded tapes) that are recorded in adjusted vcr. Thanks for the video!

    I fixed picture but I messed up another thing on my Panasonic. After video cassette is IN white roller (on the left side) take the track but only half of the way and stopped where this black thing or sensor is (visible on 1:40). As you place cassette your roller on the left side goes all the way up while mine only until this black mid way. Right roller is ok, I tried everything but do not know what could be a problem since it is definitely something simple, it happened right after I fixed image exactly as you did :( . I notice that this white pedal (on the left rollers right side) do not push to tighten the tape until this mid zone so that maybe the issue too. I know it is simple but do not know what is issue...

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Рік тому

      I'm not sure what could have changed from adjusting the tracking a little bit. It sounds like a roller is hanging up on something and not wrapping the tape around the head. Make sure there is not any dirt build up in any of the mechanisms. Sometimes a good cleaning can help.

    That Panny does have a tracking control. It's probably activated using the remote control. My JVC decks are like that. You can find the manuals for most of these old decks online. Now, can you do this with a Beta deck? Won't you then have to get it back the way it was BEFORE the adjustments? Otherwise, why would the companies have produced alignment tapes for use in aligning the heads? Just keep it out of alignment...

      @@EoCx1 Many times people are trying to run tapes that are old and haven't been used for many years. If the tape isn't running smoothly and/or bunching up it will get ejected. Sometimes rewinding the tape and fast forwarding it a few times will reset and retension the tape which might help it run smoothly. There are ways to rewind a tape by hand if the machine won't run it. If it does the same thing on many different tapes that probably wouldn't be the problem. Just a tip, make sure a tape is in or you have the VCR unplugged before messing around inside. I poked inside with the thing on and no tape in, now the CST in light is blinking and the VCR won't do anything. (if anyone knows how I can fix this I'd appreciate it!)

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Рік тому +1

      Too bad that happened, Brandon. I don't know what the fix would be. You definitely need to be careful when the cover is off and the machine is plugged in. Don't touch anything with the screwdriver except the tape guide screws.

    How does that work if I turn that part? Does the location go up or down when I turn the parts?

      It moves the tape guides slightly when you turn the screws. Try your tracking adjustment first if your machine has them that work. Don’t turn the screws very much and look at the picture as you are adjusting them. I don’t have any other videos on VCRs.

      @@jasondashney Sorry for the slow response and yeah, the VCR King is maybe not a real king of vcr's. The audio head is separate from the video head and yours might need to be cleaned. I have this exact model, so this video was particularly helpful. The problem I’m having now is that it seems I have to adjust the tracking for each individual tape I play. Any idea what I can do about that? Otherwise, I’m thinking I’ll just have to buy another VCR with manual tracking.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring

      I swear I’m usually the kind to read the description first. 😅 Thanks for the tip! Seems to be working, so at least I can keep the VCR shut. It’s just weird that this tracking issue only came up in the last few days, conveniently at the same time I decide to digitize some old tapes, ha. The VCR has been in my family and functional since it was new, and had been playing tapes without issue as recently as last week. Now I have to adjust the tracking when I put in a new tape or even just rewind/fast forward the one that’s in there.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  3 роки тому +1

      You might have solved the tracking mystery yourself when you said "old tapes". Depending on how they were recorded and stored I guess I wouldn't be surprised if they needed some help to play. If they were all new factory produced tapes I bet the machine would work better.

    QUESTION: I cleaned the VCR heads similar to what is done in this video. I used paper and the 91% rubbing alcohol. The tapes played with improved video and audio. Everything seemed fine. But then I put the cover back on the VCR and the video problems and audio problems returned. I then cleaned the heads again. This time when I put the cover on the VCR the video problems no longer existed, but there was still a slight "static" hiss type of noise. This happens EVERY TIME. I have tried this over a dozen times and the moment I place the cover onto the VCR while a tape is playing, the static "hiss" starts to be there. What is causing this and how can it be corrected?

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring

      I'm not sure if it's actually a mechanical adjustment. If your remote doesn't work try the channel up/down on the player itself. Or if you have a dedicated tracking control button try that. If none of those work then your tracking adjustment isn't working, or it is too far out of alignment. I would then try the procedure outlined in this video. Good luck.

The only thing that is displayed is the menu when i press the menu button, but when i wanna play the VHS the screen is completely black like there is no signal, but the sound is perfectly fine. • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  5 років тому

      Since it is not a problem with a particular tape, and you have tried different cables and TV's, I would think you have a problem with the head or possibly the cable jack. Are all the connectors, or pins, of the jack on the machine in good shape? Head cleaning might help but you need to be careful as the head can be broken fairly easily. Usually a dirty or "clogged" head will still have some picture but will be snowy or otherwise faulty. I wish I could offer you more help. Maybe some research on UA-cam or Google will yield some answers.

      If it's only on certain tapes, especially if they are not factory made recordings, I would guess the tape is bad or incompatible with your VCR. You could try the tapes that go black in another VCR if you have one, that might tell you something. Hope this helps a little.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  2 роки тому

      It probably will change the picture quality for the ones that work fine. That's why there are tracking controls on most machines so you can adjust from tape to tape as necessary. Have you tried the tracking controls on your particular machine? Many times if there is not a dedicated tracking control knob, it is the channel up and down buttons that double as tracking controls while a tape is playing.
