It's excellent that the 6600m is running at 100w in this machine. I just returned a Legion 5 with a 6GB 3060 that was running out of texture memory using ultra settings, so I'm particularly interested in the 8GB video memory. Now, if we can only get this 6600m in a laptop with a MUX switch, 16" 1440p (or 1440x1200 resolution) 165Hz non-floppy panel, like the Legion 5 pro has, and a CPU+cooling solution that doesn't get above 80 degrees, or irritate the hell out of you with fan noise at full load, then we'd really be talking about a laptop I'd buy.

I have to agree with your opinion about the Omen's screen and its flimsiness, but is still useable for me. I recently purchased this same HP Omen 16 (Ryzen 5800H & RX 6600M) from my local BestBuy for about $1460 to replace my 5 y/o Dell XPS 9560 (Intel Core 7th gen & NVidia 950) with a 4K display. The HP Omen was not available in store, so it had to be ordered and delivered from where ever their Mainland warehouse, since I live on Oahu, Hawaii .

If I had the choice of choosing between the RTX3060 omen and this model, I would personally pay the 100$ to upgrade from the R5 to R7 in the rtx 3060 since the better gpu(100w 3060), better screen and ray tracing capabilities far outweigh the slight boost in performance and the 16.1 inch screen.

I'd go for this in a heartbeat with the 165Hz panel if the screen wobble gets fixed. The 6600m's 8GB of video memory is decisive. I just returned a Lenovo Legion 5 5800h/3060 because the 6GB of video memory just isn't enough at ultra settings. Typical nGreedia not giving you enough video memory to force you to upgrade to the 3070 for the 8GB, even if you don't need the additional performance.

I'm in the UK, and am considering buying this. The QHD (300 nits, 100% sRGB) is the only version available here. The only thing holding me back right now is the keyboard - it's not a standard UK ISO keyboard layout (i.e. no double height ENTER key, and the backslash (\) key is in a weird location - which will annoy me, as I use it a lot as I'm a Linux user - SHIFT + \ = |). I dunno, I really want to get it (it's £1,299 over here), but that keyboard... Before I arrived in the UK, I only used US ANSI keyboards, so maybe I can get used to the bizarre UK keyboard layout...

My cheaper Legion 5 (5800 & 3060) with the 165hz display actually measured 380 nits in SDR mode, so not to shabby either! 99% srgb as well and I preferred the 1080p res over the 1440 one. That and the less gamey "esthetic" aka no RGB and logos. Too bad about the slow RAM but that's about the only compromise made on this generation.

I actually prefer it when the hinge is loose, because it makes the laptop "live" longer. I repair laptops as a side job and the most common critical failure (at least physically) are bronken hinges which, in time, also break the screen and the chasis. I do repair it, but it's a gigantic pain and need a lot ot time.

Nice review. I purchased an open-box one from Best Buy for around $1120 and so far it's been a decent laptop. Obviously not the best out there, and I'm still considering switching to a Razer Blade since I came from a Mac and like that style a lot. This laptop performs fairly well, though the battery is poor even doing basic things on power saving modes. I did figure out how to make the backlit functionality have effects instead of being static--it's through the light studio in the Omen gaming hub. Pretty cool. It's a good choice for mid-range gaming, but not very portable and not for long usage of web browsing or creating documents at the coffee shop. You might get 2-3 hours tops unless you figure out some crazy tweaks. Not to forget, you have to carry two massive things around with you--the bulky laptop and the astoundingly large and awkward power brick.

As pointed out elsewhere, it is possible that the LCD of the rental machine was at the prototype level.
As far as the brightness and RGB accuracy numbers are concerned, it is probably a diversion of Victus.
(Since the 6600M model is an AMD ADVANTAGE platform, it promises a brightness of more than 300cd and high response speed.)
The hinges currently on the market seem to be a little improved.
Still, the basic design is delicate.
Also, since the battery installed in the RX6600M model is 83wh(max run of 9-hour), 70wh(6-hour) of this model is that of the nvidia model.
So the commercial OMEN16 RX6600M model is a pretty extravagant configuration.

Is this a joke? 'AMD Advantage' is supposedly a badge of assured quality - does 67% of sRGB coverage make this a "Premium Display" as advertised for AMD's "Advantage" branding?
And no, a higher resolution panel with better gamut is not a viable option paired with a 6600M! That means I either have to run at a more demanding resolution with lower FPS, or put up with the blur from QHD to FHD scaling. And I have to pay for the privilege of that handicap? Which would put it at the same price as a Strix G15 Advantage Edition!
Bah! I'm so sick of waiting for AMD's OEMs to get their crap together.
Asus is the only company that takes them seriously.

I bought hp omen 17 with 10750H and 2080super mobile, otherwise same specs as fast ssd, 144hz 1080p but at least gsync. All in all I dont regret for not waiting the 3000s nvidia, since they are such a joke with this random wattage. My 2080super with 150W beats most 3070s and i havent tried the 200w bios update I plan to test. If i dislike something, it is the intel cpu.. damn for 6core only gets so hot.. finally my warrenty finished, so I can apply a real thermal solution and hopefully fix that.
Screeen of the omen 17 has no such ridiculous wobble. I really like the colours. But the brightness was a joke too. Coming from asus rog g750jz, that i still have, the asus one, being 5+ years old can get you blind in the dark on full brightness, but the hp... in day time if it's sunny, unexpectedly weak. Also, what i disliked was the speakers... but the last laptop with good speakers/subwoofer i used was Toshiba Qosmio f50. After that everything s***** in comparison.
On the positive side - performance check. Beast, i beat desktop ryzen 7 3800X with rx 5700 xt which was unexpected. Maintainability check. Ports, thunderbolt check. Reliabity - lets see :D hopefully. So far the only survived laptop i have is this 8+ years old toshiba, that i used to play games before with gpu reaching almost 120 degrease!!! And now still working.. somehow, newer laptops might get faster and better, but reliability seems to be globally going down... and understandable, when they come up so regularly with "new generations" and reasons to update instead of improve what they already have.. yey capitalism

was curious if HP had gotten any better, after seeing this review, I really want to give a word of caution here, I've owned the HP omen older model, and will never buy HP again...thermals were horrible...battery swelled and I didn't even know, until I had to open the bottom due to fan noise (the same fan I had to replace under warranty, which means it's happened 2 x ) wasn't able to fix the fan, at all...and then plugging in the cord, wout the swollen battery , would never start up. I'm back now with Lenovo Legion 5 2021 model 4800h + 1650ti (never ever gets hot on the keyboard, 4 vents, w a huge air holes in the bottom ) I wanted the 1660 but was OOS here where I am, and the build quality is leagues ahead of the HP. With years of experience, HP is still clearly unable to figure out how to build a decent laptop. My previous Lenovo lasted 6 years, the build quality of this one, seems way better than even if it's plastic. Seriously make sure you search everything you can (forums, etc..) before buying any HP stuff....and yes, Lenovo Legion seems to actually listen to complaints. lcd hinges seem to be stronger than previous, not much flex for the keyboard area + lcd panel, etc...yes I'm biased, I used to own 2 lenovos a thinkpad which got stolen and a budget gaming, which I finally gave up as the frame literally fell apart cuz I dropped it once on the corner bottom and slowly but surely the hole frame fell apart after 6 years!, but it sure never died on me like the HP Omen I had which was supposed to be a premium gaming laptop.
