I agree that Carlos Hathcock is the greatest all time sniper. He may not have the highest confirmed kills, but the shots he did take and the circumstances he operated under are incredible. Thumbs up to the greatest sniper and to all our military snipers. God bless.

This is my rifle. There are many others like it, but this one is mine.
My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must
master my life. Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am
useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my
enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I
will. Before God I swear this creed: my rifle and myself are defenders
of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my
life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.

And what makes him even more badass is that his longest kill at 1.4 miles was not with a sniper rifle, but with an M2 .50 cal machine gun which he popped a scope on. It wasn't beaten until 2002.

7.62x51 and .308 win is almost the same thing. It's safer to say they are safely interchangeable but they are not identically the same. It's like the 5.56 x45 and the .223. Dimensionally they are the same but the cases of 5.56x45 are thicker to withstand higher pressures they generate as opposed to the .223. It's pretty interesting stuff. Look up reloading info on the 308, chances are they will mention verifying case thickness and so forth between the two as well.

I was never a sniper or designated marksman (I was a 13B) but I like shooting bolt actions. I'm a lefty and its a slower less ergonomic. My cousin is a righty and can work the bolt without taking his cheek off the stock where I need to raise my face and reset my aim when I work the action. For reference its my cousin's short-throw Lee Enfield Mk4 from WW2.

Believe me getting into the Marine Corps, let alone getting into the Army these days is harder than getting into most good colleges. I am aware of the requirements and the difficulties of becoming a marines scout sniper as you have just informed me (thank you for that info.) . I am not 2 I am 14 years of age and in well knowledge to the fact that pursuing a career in the military such as this is one of the most difficult tasks in the world and I am prepared and willing to try as best as I can. Please take it easy on me when you don't even know me. It is just a dream for now and I know very little at the moment about this stuff. But I have every intention to learn it in J.R.O.T.C., High school, college, and the rest in training. All of course after I get my education will I maybe be accepted into training.

Thank you sir and yes I have had some experience in the whole drill instructor boot camp dilemma with my dad who was a staff sergeant in the Corps for about 4 years. He has put me through boot camp simulations of what he experienced in his years of making kids wish they had never enlisted. Thank you for wishing me luck because I am sure as shit going to need it when in combat and even in boot camp.

im not an expert on the mater mearly very interested.it depends on what values you grade.but as to my understanding i would rank Simo Häyhä as the nr1 sniper. i am sure hatchcock developed the tactics and equipment for a modern day sniper, and was good at it. but the fact is that the individual performance of the white death(as he was called) by the ussr) was astonishing, facing an overpowered, in numbers and in material enemy, in freezing arctic temps.with 505 confirmed kills in approx 100 days

civilians can't buy the m40 I don't believe. I think it's limited to LE and MIL only. However, you can buy the parts and put your own together. A Manners, Bell and Carlson, or McMillan stock will suffice depending on your price point. A Badger Ordnance DBM (detachable box magazine) drop in. And the "5R" rifling in a remington barrel. I believe all m40's use the 5r system and I know that civilians can buy one, however it's triangle shaped, no a bull barrel. Hope this helps!

your right that most haven't heard of them but that doesn't make them good snipers, and in fact 99% of their work is far to close (like in the same room) as the enemy to be using snipers, also they're training is shorter and less intense than the SAS/SBS so you can be pretty assured that the other special operations forces snipers are more used and therefore more useful and better than the SRR snipers
