I've often fantasized about Joker getting blown the fuck away by Bullock, or another member of the GCPD. No "one bad day" vindication in death bullshit, just gunned down like a common thug by someone who won't lose a wink of sleep.

    • @kaiwilliams141

I've thought about that too. Just like some beat cop sees the Joker with a gun and fires like any actual cop would. The Batfamily then just deals with the fall out.

Alfred kills the Joker, then calls Gordon and the two of them clandestinely clean and move the body. Bruce then goes on a snipe hunt trying to figure out which villan killed him while Jim and Alfred tell him to let it rest.

Make it a screwball buddy comedy film! I think that would be hilarious.
Batman hovering over the body inspecting it, Gordon and Alfred exchange nervous glances.
A frantic, panicked phone call to the Commisioner. "So, Jim, don't freak out. But Bruce Wayne is Batman, and Joker found out. He showed up at Wayne Manor and I just fucking shot him in the face."
"Okay, first of all, what the absolute fuck. And second of all. BATMAN HAS A NO KILLING RULE. Bruce is gonna be fucking pissed."
"I WILL PAY YOU VAST SUMS OF THE WAYNE FORTUNE IF YOU HELP ME COVER IT UP."
Jim pauses, phone in hand. Glances over at a framed photo of himself and Barbara.
      "I'll be there in 5."

My pitch for a final joker story is something ala What Ever Happened to the Caped Crusader.
It would be called What Ever Happened to he Clown Prince of Crime? It would be all about the many different versions of joker in their final days. Some die laugh while fighting batman, other die sad in Blackgate as Batman retires. And it's final page would be a person who we can't see their face at all, and they look up to see a bat.

Enter The Hecklers- At this point..The Joker has killed and maimed so many people in Gotham...that the next time he escaped..there would eventually be an organized mob/cells of relatives of his victims all over the place waiting to kill him themselves. Nurses, Cops, Teachers, Criminals, Dock Workers, Technicians, Mechanics.
If there ever was a "Last Joker story" it should be like this. He dies not from some confrontation with Batman..but with a mob of the loved ones of all his victims. You can even fill their ranks from minor background characters from over the years. Connect the story to all the one shot victims over the decades. Use them to have flashbacks of all these stories and then add in how it ruined their lives....and how that led them to find "The Hecklers". Batman finds out who they are but can't do anything about it as none of them will roll on the others.

I know it's a terrible idea but I still love it. Just some nobody kills the joker, maybe an off duty cop. Just someone carrying a gun, sees him and knows it's him and then shoots him and keeps walking. It's a huge mystery and Batman never finds out and the killer confides in like Bullock or something at a bar at the very end and that's when the audience finds out.

Super interesting stream! Funnily enough, for the last few days I've been brainstorming a "Death of the Joker" story that'd see the Clown Prince killed, pushing Batman into investigating the murder. Not gotten that far into developing the story itself, but I do want to bring the Riddler in as one of the primary suspects, his motive being that he had always felt upstaged by the Joker (which could be read as a meta-commentary on the Riddler's reputation as sort of the lesser version of the Joker). Riddler had always aspired to be Batman's nemesis, yearning for recognition from who he believed was the opponent he'd been waiting his entire life for, only for the Joker - a psychotic nihilist with no apparent regard for the sorts of meticulously crafted crimes and the sort of genius they require that the Riddler is so besotted with - to completely steal the spotlight, and with it Batman's attention.
I'm not sure who would actually have killed the Joker, although both Jason and Gordon are good shouts. I could even see justification for Dick being the one to pull the trigger. However, if we're talking about how the Joker really *ought* to die, for me there's no better way than him dying in a hospital bed, with Batman by his side - none of the showmanship or spectacle one might expect from the Joker's end, but simply a weak and feeble old man finally succumbing to the poisons that riddled his body and mind, passing on with nobody there to witness it but his oldest adversary, who, after the Joker lets out a groaning, rattling gasp mid-laugh, stays a single moment in the silence before leaving.

to Joel's point on the similarity of Joker killing the Waynes to Braniac being from Krypton:
I think the difference there is that finding out how Krypton was destroyed is never like.. something that drives Clark the same way Bruce is motivated by his parents' deaths. Clark doesn't throw himself into astronomy to figure out what happened.

I always had this notion that the way the Joker goes out is by just a random car accident. Maybe he’s on the way to a caper or just moving between safe houses. Just hit and the car is demolished or set ablaze and know one is the wiser it was him. Just gone and Batman goes nuts trying to sus out where he is and what he’s up to. Probably not a satisfyingly good story though.

My idea has always been if JOker did die, Batman would immediately steal the body and replace it with a duplicate for the police and public to see cremated or something. But Batman would keep the body on Wayne Manor and have him burried next to his parents with surveillance located on the corpse inside the casket at all times and have it be a never ending security footage running on the Batcomputer. Because no matter what, Bruce would just need the reassurance it actually happened.

Fun vid! Interestingly enough, the idea that the Killing Joke was originally published as an out-of-continuity story is a widespread myth. There's actually a lot of evidence against it.
    1) A week before it was released at the end of March 1988, DC published the "Batgirl Special #1" which was intended as a send off to Barbara Gordon's career as Batgirl where she officially retired. She had actually unofficially retired since she hadn't appeared in a single monthly issue of Batman or Detective Comics for 5 years at the point. Last appearance I think was Detective Comics #526.
    2) Merely 5 months later in August, Joker's crippling of Barbara Gordon was already being referenced in Batman #426, the start of the "A Death in the Family" arc. Its the reason the Joker's broke and has to flee the country. All the authorities came after his assets for what he did to Barbara.
    3) The picture of the Golden Age Bat-family (technically the early Silver Age Batfam) doesn't really have any bearing on this. Moore and Bolland were working on the book before, during, and after Crisis was being published. As such what was, and was no longer, part of continuity was still up in the air. The Killing Joke sort of has its feet in both the pre and post-crisis worlds.
    4) Moore, like with his Swamp Thing run, was actually careful to work within the established continuity. That's why he made sure to retain the Red Hood element of the Joker's backstory.
    5) At the time DC didn't yet have the Elseworld's label. Instead they had "Imaginary Tales." Moore's previous "Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" was actually published under that label. The Killing Joke was not. There were exceptions, like Miller's Dark Knight Returns, but the contents of that book change the status quo so much its obvious its not the mainstream universe. Generally speaking, unless its clear otherwise, pretty much everything published is technically "canon" by default usually.
    6) Finally, the fact that Moore had to get permission to cripple Barbara belies any notion this was intended to be out-of-continuity. Why would he need permission to cripple a major supporting character if this wasn't going to be canon? Did Frank Miller have to get permission to kill both the Joker and Alfred in Dark Knight Returns. I highly doubt it.
I think people just grab onto the "originally not canon" myth because it helps buttress the "Batman kills the Joker at the end" interpretation, which based on the script and Moore and Richard Starkings' (the letterer) comments, is not what the creators intended and the apparent ambiguity of the ending was unintentional.

I always thought that jokers death should be a 3 issue story. This would be my pitch. Think Murder on the Orient Express with superheroes. My Title is "Gotham's Greatest Secret"
Issue 1: Joker has been missing for a year and batman that he is going to investigate his whereabouts because typically when joker vanishes for an extended period of time it's because he's planning something big. The issue ends with Batman calling Gordon, and the last page reveal is a full page splash of jokers corpse (who's been dead for about a year) and batman saying to Gordon "the Joker is dead"
Issue 2: opens only a few hours later with Clark seeing on the news that joker is dead and visiting Bruce the investigation of what happened to which Bruce tells him what he knows but that he appreciates but does not want supermans help in the investigation. A simple detective story follows of batman following the evidence and trying to figure out and track down who killed the Joker. And the Batman's role in the story ends with him confronting who he believes killed the Joker who in this case would be Ra's or Talia.
The issue ends with a flashback where batman informs Gordon that joker is dead, but we see what happens after batman leaves and Gordon calls someone and says "we need to meet".
Cut to a few hours later with Gordon meeting with certain members of the bat family, including but not limited to: Barbara, Tim, Dick, Jason, Selina, Damian. (All in costume obviously despite Gordon knowing Barbara is Oracle) but before a word can be said the final page is superman arriving and all he says is "what did you do!?"
Issue 3: opens with a flashback to most recent Joker story where joker does something horrific, and of course escaping at the end. Ideally this story leaves everyone injured but particularly batman in a critical state which enables the entire batfamily to have a meeting discussing the Joker and what should be done about him, the typical enough is enough argument, especially since they came so close to losing Bruce this time. Obviously the bat family would be split on this, with those who have been personally affected by joker being more in favour than others. The arguement ends with the majority in favour and the others accepting but refusing to be a part of it.
Cut to a few months later with either Oracle or Tim informing other members of the bat family that they have tracked down the Joker.
Cut to either Alfred or Dick conversing with Superman requesting that Bruce be sent away on a mission for the justice league, superman is suspicious but obliges. Cut to Barbara consulting with her father what they're about to do.
Cut to Damian consulting with either Ra's or Talia what they're about to do, and since batman can never know that the bat family did it that they want to make it look like it was the league, namely Ra's or Talia with them agreeing since joker almost killed Damian as well as batman and also offering that they could do it in their place to which Damian refuses because this is personal.
Cut to jokers death scene where he is surrounded by the bat family, and murder on the Orient express style, all the members present get their shot in at joker
Now my personal preference is that Gordon and a masked Alfred (for the sake of Gordon not figuring Batman's identify even though my preference is that he DOES know but no one else knows he does) deal the most fatal blows, with alfreds being the final but not before whispering in his ear "this is for everything you've done to my children" simply so that joker, recognising his voice (and obviously knowing that batman is Bruce Wayne) can have the last words, even if only Alfred hears them be "ha, the butler did it"
The rest of the epilogue would show how mainly the three detectives, Tim, Barbara and Gordon, erasing and forging evidence so that it appears that Ra's or Talia were responsible.
This whole flashback sequence is narrated by all involved members of the bat family as they are explaining what happened to superman who is appalled but after some heated debate agrees to keep this from Bruce, but promises that Bruce will find out one day and when he does there will be a reckoning.
And Gotham's greatest secret is that all of Gotham's hero's except for Batman know what truly happened to the Joker

The details can be changed and shuffled around. But basically the main things I want from a death of the Joker story is:
      • Batman is absent when joker dies
      • Joker has been dead for a while before batman finds out
      • the bat family is responsible
      • everyone but batman knows (namely bat family and Gordon)
      • Superman finds out. But Batman either never does (or at least doesn't for a very long time)
