I didn't get into "the scene" until after Black Flag had shut down, but a friend had them crash in her apartment when their usual place in that town was unavailable. She said that Henry and Kira were extremely polite, Bill was funny but kept falling asleep, and Greg was so busy in his own head that he didn't say a dozen words. But, they were all very grateful when she cooked them dinner at 2 am, and even moreso when she ran their laundry through the building's laundry machines.

One of my favorite moments was some kid at work making me listen to Dave Mathews in the 90's. I told him I was gonna go to my parents house & dig my old tape collection out of the basement & make him suffer. First thing I played was Minor Threat, & he recognized Ian MacKay's voice because he liked Fugazi, let him borrow my Minor Threat tape to dub, didn't have to listen to Dave Mathews again. The best part was that it reignited my love for punk after not listening for about a decade, still listening to this day.

Black Flag is like if you make The Misfits and Danzig completely insane. Their fans aren't technically the worst music fanbases unlike others I've mentioned time and time again on this channel, but they get pissed easily if Black Flag changes styles that fit them for each era. The changes between members didn't help matters, as shit will continue to get violent; it's for the best you shouldn't be a fan of Black Flag, nor become a new member. They're that infamous, not for their band affiliates turning out as criminals, but the violence they caused is the turning point where Black Flag gets named no pun intended, the 'black sheep' of the punk scene. I hope Danzig gets discussed on this channel, cuz it would be pretty cool.

Seriously though, it's funny how Henry Rollins was always willing to do different stuff. Look at the music video for the song "The Whole Truth" by Wartime and thank me later. *You can tell he grew up around DC cause of wartime's heavy go-go influence.
I think it's a stretch to say that every post-Damaged Rollins era album was some sort of new direction. My War & Slip It In were awesome, then it kinda goes down hill with decent stuff here and there, IMO.

This is more about sst, but apparently sst was not very good. The meat puppets had a entire saga to get the master tapes back so they could re-issue the albums they put out on that label. They did get them back, but they were apparently barely useable. I think the instagram image is still out there on what the masters look like. I kind of figured that might be why some SST stuff has never had a re-issue outside of black flag stuff.
Love Keith Morris, my favorite Black Flag singer, his stint with the Circle Jerks & his stuff with OFF!. He stayed true to form over the years, legendary icon.

Pop punk is one of the worst contridicted anomalies I've ever witnessed, a corporate creation pushed by MTV back in the 90's & one if the worst travisties ever perpetrated in music. Christian metalhead follow what ever metal authority wants. It music that lack creatively. Christian punker usually make music in line which message of there lyrics and going against the grain of punk rock authorities.
The reason My War was panned by critics and detested by fans was that it sounded too metal. At the time, there was competition between Punk and Heavy Metal. Long hair wasn't considered cool either. You kind of had to be there to understand.
Also the production is pretty bad, that's my biggest gripe. Not that Damaged sounded "good" but it at least had a certain insane ferocity to it. My War has some good songs but really weak flabby production. I think that and the plodding length of the last few songs were what crossed a lot of folks. I love the record anyway!
On the part where you explain their name representing anarchy, I actually have a potential origin story on where they may have gotten their name. There was a bs conservative tv series in the late 60s that was propagating lies about the psychedelic scene and they had Jack Kerouac and Ed Sanders of The Fugs on there & the host and some shmuck were basically condescendingly blaming them for the “violence in the hippie scene” and at about 38:58 Keroac chimes in sarcastically “There goes the black flag of Anarchy!” in response to one of the shmucks blame statements. I understand black flags have represented anarchy for a while but let me link ya’ll the video & you’ll see how this segment may have actually been influential to their band naming. Especially considering how influential The Fugs were to punk, it’s not impossible that they had been digging through old tape recordings of the show due to the influential underground figures in the segment: ua-cam.com/video/BYgv7ur8ipg/v-deo.htmlsi=L7N7dAJIqtmX390U
WRONG! "Panic" started in '77, the name was changed after recording their demo /aka the Nervous breakdown single. At the very beginning of '79 is when they because Black Flag. Henry literally quit a job at a baskin Robbin’s to join that band lol
erm ackshually it was häagen dazs
Nice one, coolea. Also there is any chance of a Danzig video in the future?
I'd absolutely love to see a video of Danzig's absolute insanity throughout his life
I concur
If you're young, angry, misunderstood, and hungry, this is the band for you!
saw black flag with mike valalley on vocals almost a year ago, one of my favorite bands ive seen live and i hugged him after the show ended
Ok you know what I'm about to ask. When can we get an ignorant guide to deathcore?
this
When deathcore starts being good
I’m waiting for a prog rock ignorant guide
When the younger generation hear my music at work they are like What The Fuck! Was that.😂😂😂
I'm 30. Been listening to punk since I was 14.
I get the same reactions everywhere, and have for 16 years.
@@chizorama I used to do stuff like that at work. Eventually started playing noise punk to fuck with everyone. Was great seeing their reactions to that......
@@theblondesiouxsiesioux One of the managers there, nice old guy, used to come into the kitchen & would shake his head & ask me wtf I was listening to. I told him people repellent.
Funniest Black Flag mini-bio video, you got my sub! Cheers!🎉
Any chance of a Hank III video? The man who could carry on his grandfather's legacy & also rip some punk.
Thatd be great honestly, I love how completely ridiculous his blend of music can get at times. Offstage, a really friendly and welcoming guy too!
CRASS were the epitome of what punk was/is
Met Craig at a show last August, pretty cool guy
editing is on point. kudos
2:34 a meme I actually saw live
I’m gonna see them in about a month, so thanks for the info
do danzig next
can you do more rap genres explained? like 90s hip hop, soundcloud rap, drill, trap metal, emo rap, punk rap, cloud rap
Beach Boys - My War
Yo, you should make a video covering industrial!
Black Flag's arc can't compete with the Bad Brains' 180, or Gangreen selling out. There were far worse examples of bands "evolving" back then.
Great videos! Keep it up. Exhausting edits but I love them, very funny and in a weird way backing ut the story really nicely. Kudos
Black flag is a bug spray. This is why when Kieth morris formed his new band he named it “OFF!”, another bug spray.

Literally saw black flag last night in mchenry il it fr blew me away mike valley sounds like Rollins and brought the energy he fr doesn’t deserve hate in any way best show I’ve been to
I like that this is the first time anyone ever questioned that "black flag were spied on" narrative.
As always g, a pleasure
Video 2 of asking for the 80s French ska punk scene
Great video big C
My War is their best work in my opinion. Slowed down is heavier.
0:46 I didn't know that Jim Carry was in a band back then.
What’s the background guitar loop used?
I'm kinda surprised you haven't talked about KGLW yet
They are the best band

Your videos have become the highlight of My week. My life is sad i know. Im working on that. But thank you for making dope content. ❤️
I never listened to black flag but now I want to 😂
I'm a black flag fan, i love every style BF did since today, hardcore punk's evolution to sludge and independent music to fame are alive because of black flag.
Nervous Breakdown us their best. Love y though
3:52 "Who on earth would be insane enough to join Black Flag as a vocalist?"
Me: Some utterly fucking deranged dude from the DC scene.
Damaged was recorded with a 5 piece lineup and 2 guitars. Dez was still very much in the band at that point
For the clip at 8:14, I was there that night. This was taken at the Black Sheep in Colorado Springs
Nice!
sonic youth mentioned
do a video about children of bodom mosh pits even Alex from SLauther to prevail said he can´t compete with them XD
to make crowds beat each other for fun
Only pit I've ever been in and received a serious injury....
Do Oi punk please
I grew up during the tail end of Black Flag. They were untalented and unlistenable. I preferred Greg Sage and the Wipers for punk.
SOMEDAY
Henry rollins is my favorite artist, punk or otherwise, of alltime.
this editing is great but I also just listened to 90% of it, so take that for what it's worth.
ok
Love this band All the alternative rock in some reason were influenced by black flag, remind damaged and my war were in Kurt Cobain top50 albums, and even the nirvana debut got some black flag vibes
Why henry rollins always angry
Video 9(?) of asking for ignorant guide to desert metal

Anyone been to one of their recent shows? Still pretty fun even if its a skeleton crew
I did in october of last year, they solid but dont play as fast as I would like them to, even it they play their old songs. Took a pic greg gin, that was cool.
I saw them at the black sheep. One of my favorite shows I have ever been to. It was just a damn good show. They threw that guy out as shown in the clip at 8:14. I was there
@@ChiefSpartan1 NO WAY! Thats my hometown venue!
I haven't. But a friend of mine who is a huge B.F fan did a while ago. And he fucking hated it. Which is not like him to hate anything, so yeah. I'd have to go myself to really have an opinion. But I don't really care for b.f enough to shell out to see em, specially if it's questionable.
Black flag nervous breakdown ep was just perfect, i really liked them with keith morris, i love his voice it fits so well into punk
Love Keith Morris, my favorite Black Flag singer, his stint with the Circle Jerks & his stuff with OFF!. He stayed true to form over the years, legendary icon.
Shout out High Vis
Loved this
Never got into punk man. Lol
Damaged was not recorded with a 4-piece lineup wot. Dez played second guitar.
Day 3 of asking for an ignorant guide to Southern Rock
1:21 barre chords.
I saw black flag 2 years ago and the energy was great when they played their old shit that everyone actually likes but then the Greg Ginn show started and they did a 30 minute jam sesh to Louie Louie and entirely lost the whole crowd I left and went home so I don't know exactly how long they jammed out to Louie Louie for
when they say hard core punk they where not kidding. I can now see how brave early pop punk bands where because at the time in 1980s hardcore punk had strangle hold on punk.
Pop punk is one of the worst contridicted anomalies I've ever witnessed, a corporate creation pushed by MTV back in the 90's & one if the worst travisties ever perpetrated in music. They weren't brave, they were created. I burnt the screens for Greenday t-shirts months before Dookie came out. Just a cash grab mickey mousing a style of music never meant for mass consumption.
@@chizorama honest you do not understand pop punk. do know how hard it is now get up beat rock music at 160 to 180 bpm. hell any music that happy at that bpm. I look under rocks to find it. rock really suck now. Today it is mostly heavy metal crap and post grunge crap. I wish anti ninniva would come and send all heavy metal crap back to underground and save rock. Before 1990s pop punk was under ground. the descendants talk how hard it was in punk scene in 1980s. if did not play right style of music the punk crowd would attack you or be mean to you. With me I listen to mostly Christian pop punk. So a lot stuff people complain secular pop punk was not in christian pop punk.
@@spark300c I wouldn't label the Descendants as pop punk, they just weren't hardcore, so I understand because the scene was extremely biased. Can't comment on modern music or the genre trends, as I'm stuck in my bubble in the past & haven't heard hardly anything that's caught my ear, but I won't buy into the concept of pop punk, ever. That's me being a stubborn old man that grew up with the real thing, & all the bullshit that came with it, not the music but the scene.
@@spark300c christian pop punk, because pop punk wasn't contradictory and stupid enough
@@elpeluca7780 well it only old head would think punk rock is an attitude than style of music. if listen to Ramones it quite simple music. just Barr chords at as quarter notes at around 170 bpm. also why no one respects old head because they make all punk rocker s fallow the punk rock authority. punk rock is doing your own thing. you know there is difference Christian punk rock and Christian metal. Christian metalhead follow what ever metal authority wants. It music that lack creatively. Christian punker usually make music in line which message of there lyrics and going against the grain of punk rock authorities.
I just like vibing to some of their music. I didn't know their history was quite that rich and fucked up.
Srebrny Brek!
Hold on! Panic was the name of Dave Mustaine's first band
Especially considering how influential The Fugs were to punk, it’s not impossible that they had been digging through old tape recordings of the show due to the influential underground figures in the segment:

BLACK FLAG
We became aware of Ginn's true colors (and smell) with the release of "U2" by Negativland. "SST STILL SUCKS CORPORATE ROCK."
Can you make a vid on Dead Kennedys
"black flag" doesn't represent anarchy because of some metaphor mate, it has been an actual anarchist symbol since the 19th century
I don't remember using the term metaphor once in this video.
@@cooleayou kinda did take the name as a metaphor though. A white flag as a metaphor for surrender, and a black flag as the opposite of a white flag.
🏴☠️
But what he said in the video is a direct quote from black flag about their name.
I think it's dumb as what o.p said is legit. But still.
I'm not sure why everyone thinks that Rollins (and Joe Rogan) is some kind of philosopher or something.
WRONG! "Panic" started in '77, the name was changed after recording their demo /aka the Nervous breakdown single. At the very beginning of '79 is when they because Black Flag. The debut of the aforementioned 7" & gig were January '79. Between then & the release of their 2nd e.p Jealous again, Pettibone -Ginn's bro created the bar-logo. After 1.5 years of Cadena singin' @ their singles in '81 Rollins (nee Garfield) joined; & by the start of '82 their debut full.length Damaged w/ the TV party put them & their apex.
13 years old got into rollins band. 15 heard damaged. 42 years old my war is MY favorite.
