The lawsuit is ridiculous. It’s no different than Weight Watchers suing; McDonalds, Burger King and Pringles for negatively impacting their clients eating habits.
Banning the phones isn’t a solution… because the kids will still have tablets and laptops.
Teachers can uphold cell phone related policies, and parents can set conditions on their kids cell phone use, but at the end of the day it’s up to the kid. If the kid has no self control, then it’s a parenting problem.
What’s ironic, is that these school boards want to take away cell phone apps because the kids aren’t mature enough to moderate themselves and their brains are still developing. Meanwhile the same school boards think it’s okay for the same immature kids, whose brains are still developing, to make their own decisions regarding gender affirming treatment…without informing the parents. They can’t handle social media, but they can decide to take puberty blockers. lol

      1) not every child has a protective, competent parent
      2) phones have become integrated into our society, unfortunately we are forced to utilize them for day to day responsibilities. It’s not surprise that teens have phones.
      3) these social media apps utilize features that capture the brains endorphins and dopamine. That’s highly addictive for a developing brain.
Nobody forced them to use phones but our society has an emphasis on technology and considering those are the children that spent 2 years out of school and online learning…it’s not fair to put the onus on children.

You can absolutely do that as a parent and you should. You should also raise your kids not to put too much thought in to what you see and limit time. Regardless of your rules on social media, the kids are going to do it anyways at a friend's house without your knowledge. Instead of completely sheltering your kids from it, teach them properly. If you are a respectful and mentally present parent, your child WILL listen. Show them the danger. Show them! If you shock them with reality, they'll wake up fairly quick. I'm a very lenient parent but I'm also a no BS parent. So far, my rules work and as a single father, having my daughter talk to me with no shame or embarrassment about her and her female changes and other female issues, I think, speaks volumes. It's about trust. Show them trust and respect and you'll get the same in return; not instantly but stay the course and you'll be surprised.

They are on Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, Google, Pinterest, and Messaging each other on WhatsApp and iMessage. The students are presented with, I have shared 9 of them, SO many distractions that being told to read for 5-10 minutes is something not a lot of students can do anymore. Some students find it insufferable to be sitting in silence for more than a couple minutes, and some can't stand the constant noise of their peers being distracted. It's become so chaotic that even telling a kid to put their phone away becomes a power-struggle with the teacher. So, what are they doing with a phone in class? A LOT it seems. However, if parents, social media app creators, the government, school boards, the ministry of education, administrators, and teachers work TOGETHER to get rid of these distractions, maybe we'll be successful in creating smart, critical thinking adults by the end of high school.

Why has nobody addressed the fact that kids need to learn about what drives the internet and all the various platforms that use it. I've worked in tech since the mid 90's and have raised a fine tech literate child who understands why advertising shapes everything we see from news media to tictok and that people are the currency they trade in.
I'd be more on side with *people suing the school boards* for their negligence in something that was completely preventable had they hired people smart enough to do the job. Do you sue the vodka company every time you get sick and have a hangover? Or do you learn from it and pass that knowledge on to others so they can use vodka responsibly?
How about starting literacy classes for parents when they have children?

Teachers have very little control on what they are allowed to teach. I think (and you probably agree) that the system needs a huge update. For those commenting that it's up to the individual to choose not to partake --- 'choice' is the keyword ... addiction destroys choice. Any exposure to social media exposes the user to the elements that are addictive by design and/or nature.
Those accusing parents --- are ignoring how successful kids of any age are in either snookering them and any other adult - and/or finding alternative avenues of getting what they want ... and what they want is what is banned from them - this, smoking, age-restriction events, you name it - it's part of human nature at that stage in our development, and every adult can recall having gone through it.
Thank you to those having put this lawsuit into action - it will prove a tough course, but entirely necessary.

You have an obligation to teach children right from wrong, and the parents who aren’t doing this are part of the problem with bullying and harassment.
Schools do not allow phones in class, at least my children’s school. That hasn’t stopped the harassment and bullying over these apps, particularly Snapchat.
