Worth mentioning that as Austria, if you notice Castile/Spain is rivaled with France, you also want to rival France. If both of you are rivaled to France, then there's an event that can put a Habsburg on Castille/Spain's throne, which could help lead to a PU over them.

Do not abdicate when you have 49 Imperial Authority, or nearly that. First get to 50, pass a reform, and then abdicate. Otherwise most of that 10 IA you gain will be wasted when you pass the reform.

All the glorious Austria guides have one thing in common, nobody does the mission which gives free 5% crown lands and 10% estate loyality equilibrium at the very start. Just grab for all 3 estates the priviliges that give decisions increasing their loyality to get 60 to complete the mission, dont forget those priviliges also complete agendas instantly so take advantage of it. After that just seize crownlands and you can instantly revoke those privileges without getting into red loyalty.

I recently got done following Red Hawks last guide for Austria WC and something I wish I had noticed earlier is how inconsequential truce breaking can be once you’ve finished religious ideas and are the papal controller. With the 50% papal powers reduction golden bull, and lands for the church reform lowering costs another 10% you can get three stab for 90 papal influence. With the missionaries you get from being religious, you’ll earn that in about two years. Super useful for later game when truce timers are the only thing limiting your expansion.

This would give you 4 (counting Bohemia) junior partner electors ensuring you will always become emperor without having to become an elector yourself. Additionally, if you do this strategy even partly, you will become an elector yourself if you inherit one of your junior partners without having to usurp it from them.

    - Abdicating the throne did cost 50 legitimacy and I didn't notice before clicking
    - France allied the Ottomans during our war and I had to fight both (could take nothing from the Ottos)
    - Poland lost Lithuania shortly before I could declare for the PU
    - One Center of reformation spawned in Sweden
    - My ally GB is in a war with a weak Burgundy and and I fear GB will take provinces in the HRE. They desire some provinces in the low lands.
    - I'm on -3 stability and have nearly no Admin points, my tech level is 7/5/10, I can't convert any provinces (neither the orthodox nor the protestant ones) and the disaster Internal Conflicts fired.
I don't know, if I should continue the game. It's nearly the age of reformation and I only got as far as "Gemeiner Reichspfennig" with the reforms.
At least I have Bohemia, Hungary and Poland as PUs, and Poland is now part of the HRE. Hungary is too big to join, but I hesitate integrating it because of my lack in diplo points

    additional points:
-Keep improving relations with princes whenever you have free diplomats or you are about to hit 50 imperial authority to make them accept the reform, that way you dont have to waste much imperial authority like 60-70. Just go to the hre screen and check right bottom part where princes are listed there you can see who supports and who does not, supporters are higlighted with a frame on flags, you can also check who is the next median for voting by just moving your cursor on the next reform i guess im not sure it should be somewhere there.
-ALWAYS take Prague when you pu bohemia, helps alot with imperial authority. Yes AE is a pain in the ass but nothing that a bit of improving relations just a couple of months before peacing out cant handle, also you wont be expanding much for a while after this war anyways it is perfectly fine.
-You dont have to fight heretic prince directly, if you do not border them or they are a free city which means bunch of negative stab hits to declare, just check their allies, you must at least have one that borders you. Instead of no cb declaring on them fabricate claim on their allies and declare indirectly ooooor if theres no one including their allies that border you, you could attack the ally of the ally, just chain wars, you can handle at least 5-7 princes at once anyways whats a couple more amiright bois?:D lets say goslar is heretic and they are only allied to brunswick, you cant fabricate claims on both of them but lucky for you brunswick is allied to munich which is a nation you border, just fabricate claim on munich make brunswick co-belligerent and voila! goslar will join the war.
-I like to beat up bigger princes to cut them into pieces by releasing smaller princes like beating up brandenburg to complete the mission and to release rupin. Beating up brunswick to relase another opm prince. The more princes in the empire the more imperial authority you get on top of that you get to have more vassals when you revoke which is better, reasoning behind this is that instead of having a small 3-4 province vassal having 2 or more opm vassals is better because that 4 province guy will have base force limit which is 6 I guess+1 or 2 at most but if you create 2 other vassals from that guy you will have 2 base force limit amount of soldiers. In short instead of having 7-10k army brandenburg just beat them up and release rupin which will have 3 to 6k army and brandenburg wont lose much force limit anyways but you will get the extra 6k. Obviously the imperial authority is not huge because you have to increase the number of princes alot to see a difference it is also not needed because you can always beat your surrounding nations and carve em up for additional vassals.

My Austria game has gone a bit bonkers. Hungary became a PU *before* my leader died and my heir could be chosen as the next ruler. France and Ottomans have united in an alliance. The Balkans are now split between myself, Hungary, and the Ottomans. Waiting for a good time to somehow break up that alliance...and invade a strong Poland who currently wants to ally me.

Taking and converting Prague by declaring with a clame instead of the Pu greatly speeds up the passage of the reforms. You probably don't even need to turn off reformation centers, at that point you will take the religious peace reform soon after. Another note is that the revolt in the Netherlands is no longer as bad as in previous patches, if you don't want to move the capital it can be easily beaten because the rebels don't start by controlling forts.

Austria is one of my favorite campaigns ever; when I did one, I hade the revoked the privilege (with all the french minors + italy + all of the balkans in the HRE), had PU's over Spain, Muscovy, Poland, Lithuania, and a snake running all the way down from eastern europe to the tip of India by like 1600.
Austria is the #1 nation if you just want to just go full megalomaniac on the world while still having a bit of a challenge (I find Spain and France to be way to easy sometimes, but if you duck up with Austria, you can get your cheeks clapped by the likes of the Ottomans, PLC, and the Protestant League).
Oh also I had a Habsburg on the throne of Britain, so it was likely they would soon be PU'ed by me

you can do that with a chill byz campaign. In my current byz campaign I had almost the entire world (except central Africa and most of the islands in southeast Asia) by 1680. The key is to flip to catholic to become hre emperor and remain catholic until you revoke privilegia. Then convert to orthodox. Starting as byz you can easily get to 45-70% warscore cost reduction until the age of absolutism.

They need to have either no heir, or an heir with a weak claim. Then press the "claim throne" button in the diplomatic interactions tab. This will give you a CB to PU them. You will then dissolve your alliance to declare war.
Unfortunately the CB disappears if they get a new ruler or heir, so you might have to truce break and declare before this happens. When it's a powerful PU, I think it's worth the stab hit and AE. Or just alt+f4 if the CB disappears.
