That Super VHS machine has a similar multi speed RW/FF option that the industrial U Matic VCR's at my father's old job at our local NBC affiliate WLBZ used to have. One where you could rewind and fast forward at different speed levels. None of our home VHS units (we never had Betamax or a U Matic there) ever did that! Really cool to see one of these machines!

Have you heard of D-VHS? It's a digital format of VHS which has 1080i picture and surround Dolby Digital and DTS sound. It's ALSO good for playing/recording VHS and S-VHS tapes. If you get your hands on a machine it may be worth your time for archival, as well as an interesting dead format. Tapes were made as late as 2004, i-Robot was released on D-VHS. These things usually have component video out and optical Toslink. Plus IEEE firewire out and in. Look into it some time, you might like it.

I don't even have an archive and I want this thing. S-VHS always got my attention for some reason.

We did a show in my high school named Camous News and we used S-VHS tapes - these were our playback decks. Haven't seen this in years holy moly.

I almost used my JVC S-VHS deck out of my computer with premiere 5 and 6 (with a pinacle blue box) to edit my films for almost 10 years.
It was a great school for a semi-pro montage. I still have this baby, it works perfectly, and a box of blank S-VHS tapes.
Maybe I'll edit my work in them in the future, it may be fun.

I managed to get a S-VHS deck for $5 but it has some sort of playback issues. It warps the images and cleaning the heads hasn't helped. I'm afraid its a lost cause... My brother uses it to route his S-Video consoles to his Composite only TV so at least it has some use for now lol

Looks like you still need a VHS that can play linear stereo. 99% of Hi-Fi decks will only play the linear track in mono, so if you have an older tape, or one from a cheap company, it will only play in mono. You should also look for a D-VHS player- true hi-def and Dolby Digital on VHS, with just under 100 movies available!
First thing I check for on thrift store electronics is any reason why the previous owner may have parted with it. Just passed on a VCR (with both Hi-Fi and linear stereo, though I've already got others that do that) at Goodwill since it played OK but went nuts when running the tape in reverse-scan. Probably an easy fix but don't have the time or room for that right now.

The Goodwills here have a 30 day return policy on VCRs. I keep the receipts and try again if I get a bad one. Rarely do I find the remote though.
They are priced at $5.99-9.99 depending on the store around here.

Nice, I recently picked up an HR-S3800U for $3.50 from a charity shop with all its components, it was absolutely crazy they were selling it that low. Most of the issues with it were with specific tapes and not the unit itself, it had trouble stabilizing the picture on a few of my older tapes (Best of SNL '75, E.T., etc.), but nothing major.

      Lucky you.
I can't seem to find a working S-VHS VCR for that much even in the thrift stores I've went to!

I have a standard JVC vcr with a SVideo connector. It separates color and luminance but does not output an SVHS level picture.

I got the S3911U, doesn't have all those features but it does have the AV compulink and s-video in and out as well as S-VHS support. I have an S-VHS adapter that's pretty neat, the JVC C-P7U, put a battery in it, loads for you, opens, closes, all that. Got it for super cheap when I bought a S-VHS camcorder and it was just sitting in the camcorder bag. :D
Turns out buying those by themselves is a pretty penny online for a mere S-VHS to VHS adapter. :P
I've yet to see what Compulink does, but my AV Receiver has support for "Text" Compulink so I'm wondering if the VCR will be compatible with it. I read in the manual it has a few features like controlling the VCR via the receiver and auto-select the VCR on the receiver when you insert a tape.. or something. Not terribly useful since I'm using the DVD out for it (only s-video out my receiver has).

Yeah, that one of the advantages of some S-VHS decks - the Time Base Corrector. Nowadays though - you can buy former broadcast studio ones on Ebay for particularly peanuts - they really improve the picture.

S-VHS ET Is Not SVHS..Sorry Ben.But It Is Not A High End VHS.......

This VCR has the dynamic drum system, which minimizes or even eliminates picture noise in several visual modes, including high speed visual search. It also features flying erase heads with insert video and audio editing as well as digital time base correction and digital video noise reduction.
So, "not a high end VHS" my ass.
About the only time you're going to get a VCR that will be better, in terms of performance and features, is with a true prosumer deck, such as the Panasonic AG-1980.
And, it is a Super VHS VCR. All S-VHS ET VCRs are capable of true Super VHS operation. All you need is an S-VHS cassette and you're set; S-VHS ET is only for regular VHS cassettes.

You are lost! Having a S Video connector doesn’t make a vcr an SVHS machine.
