It is called Albanija Palace because on that spot was a famous kafana called Albanija.
The owner was a Serbian soldier who survived WWI and withdrawal through Albania, hence the name.
The kafana was demolished a long time ago, but the name stuck.
That building was Nazi headquarters in WWII during Occupation
Interesting! I wish it was still around!
@@ilovesrbija The nazi headquarters? :D

@Duane Hopwood ...and Albania was created in 1912???
Before 1912 Albania was a region and didnt have enemies so thats like calling a kafana hercegovina or vijvodina. Albania means much to him as a region and thats why he choose that name

@@cajo960 at what cost, though? If you have a decent salary (like I do), you can have an easy life. Until you get sick, though, and realize there is no one left to treat you in a hospital. So many people are gone.. Traffic is a mess, and no way it is ever improving. Fake news all around, political liberties all but gone, corruption everywhere. Just the other day in my block, someone though they were very smart, and basically confiscated a parking spot for themselves (put those small yellow-black pillars, that can be folded and locked). Inspection does nothing, police does nothing, they are not coming. Guy got a free parking spot, completely illegally, and there is nothing (legal) that you can do about it. Belgrade is like an unstoppable human being I want to kiss on the forehead. Belgrade gave me a chance to absorb itself in people’s eyes in which I could see their joyful and youthful necessities like walking to Kalemegdan. I spent my adolescence there and I had been there for the last time six days before this video. It was my birthday the day after I left...
Love these videos! I'm visiting my boyfriend in a week's time so it's great to see how the city's changed between now and the last time I visited! Please keep these videos up!
Charles you legend!!! Samo UZIVAJ
That monument you are referring is a watchtower from Salonika front, specifically Kajmakčalan.
After the war, the watchtower is disassembled and brought to Belgrade as a monument to fallen heroes of the Great War

"Palace Albania" is a kind of monument to WW1, when majority of Serbian army (and good deal of civilians) was forced to retreat over Albania all the way to Greece. Most of them died, it was winter, and lots of flu, diseases and unfriendliness... Anyway, WW1 ended with 2/3 of male population dead, mostly as part of army retreating through Albania. Also, Albania got independence just two years before, as part of Austrian dealings after liberation from Turks/Ottomans.
"Palace Albania" was finished just before WW2 broke out and was the tallest and strongest building on Balkans at the time of cca 1939 (constructed by Serbian architects with new materials for that time). That was one of the reasons both German and allied bombings of Belgrade could not bring it down, so it was fixed after WW2.
You can call "palace Albania" the exact center point of Belgrade today. The name survived due to memory of fallen Serbs in WW1 and their ordeal through Albania, then later it was convenient for Tito's "brotherhood" regime, and today, it has dozens of floors that nobody knows who's using them, yet still it's the zero point central Belgrade and is reminiscence of fallen WW1 heroes, nothing to do with today's state of Albania or Albanian people.
Glad to have you back
Great job Charles, greetings from Canada, love your videos keep up good work!

The city of Skadar in Albania was the capital of the Emperor Dušan the mighty, Serbian Empire 14th century.
Albany was a Serbian province in the past. Albania is artificial state formed only a hundred years ago to prevent Serbs access to the sea.
BULLSHIT. I am Serb too and this is bullshit. Albania was NEVER a Serbian province. More likely it was one year under Serbian occupation till its proclamation. While during WWII the Italian Fascist, later Nazi German puppet state of Albania occupied Kosovo for 5 years. Every country is imperialist. With your Nationalist shit you just boost your equivalences among Nationalist Albanians...
@@schwarzwaldkrainer Territory of modern-day Albania was a part of the Serbian empire in the 14th century. Its ruler was Dušan Nemanjić. You claim to be a Serb, and yet you know so little about the history of the Serbian nation.

Albania was restaurant back in the days 1938,,,Kafana kod Albanije@@they never changed the name...I think is ok that way ,,,
Hey Charles, the building across the president's office i.e. Novi Dvor (New Palace) is not Beli Dvor (White Palace) but Stari Dvor (Old Palace) and it serves as Assembly of the city of Belrade. Albania was a Serbian province once, much like Vojvodina. There was a reasturant on that place called by it "Albania restaurant" than after the WWI, in the 1920-ies they started building a Palace of Albania, named after the restaurant and the former Serbian province. There was much protests against building the palace, much worse than for example protests against Savamala. The building has been stoped couple of times over those protests, but has been eventualy built and now is a proud part of Belgrades rich history. Interesting enough, protesters even were saying that the building is haunted and that is too tall and will colapse, etc.
Didn't Vojvodina use to be part of Hungary? I heard it was a Austria-Hungary territory tbh
@@shyryTsr2k Yes it was, but after Serbia lost third of it's population fighting for freedom in WWI and since it was mostly inhabited by Serbs, Vojvodina and Baranja were merged with Serbia as country amogst the victors that sacrificed the most in history of warfare.
@@RudinBrodic oh shit serbia lost so many people!! That's insane I didn't know that. And ahh I understand, thanks for this. 😊

@@brkobond334 Yes it was a couple of times, I think, for short periods in 13th and 14th century, but it was mostly destroyd by Ugars, Byzantines, Bulgarians, Gots, Otomans. And mostly it was under Romans and Serbs.
Belgrade was raised to the ground 44 times believe it or not. It had many names but first was Singidun (Celtic), than Roman Singidunum. Name Belgrade is from 878 AD. Hungarian king Stevan II raises Belgrade to the ground in 1121. and builds Zemun (part of Belgrade that was under Austro-Hungary).
Liked the video, it is very nice. Thanks!
However, that is not "Beli Dvor". That was "Gradska Skupstina" or City Hall.

Belgrade is small and compact city It very easy to get around anywhere you can see everything in a day . For example Austin TX is a 4th largest city in Texas and is 50% larger then Belgrade Houston metro is 5 times larger them Belgrade

"That's where Vučić does his business"...mostly No. 2 all over Serbian people. Pozdravi i srećna Nova Godina!
the building Albania Palace is dedicated to sacrifices of Serbian army in ww1. After victories upon much larger Austro-Hungarian in the battles on mountain of Cer and Kolubara river, and after pushing Austro- Hungarian army back across Drina river, Serbian army stayed without imunition. And Austro-Hungarian and German army was coming again. So, our army had to retreat to south. Montenegrian army helped that retreatment by granating Austro-Hungarian and German forces. Serbian army had no other way than to pass across Albanian mountains, during the winter and almost without food. Many soldiers died of exosture, and also some groups of our army who were lagging behind were ambushed by Albanian gngs all the way. Serbian army reached Yoniyn sea, where French ships picked them up and took them to Korkyra island, in Greece, where they were healed and recovered.... Have you seen the monument of Grattitude to France on Kalemegdan? It is dedicatated to help our army recieved from France on Korkyra island. When Serbian soldiers recovered, French ships took them to Salonica front. Austro-Hungarian and German army already were in Macedonia, with the plan to reach Egeyan sea, and Northern Africa. In fact, their wish to reach northern Africa was the main cause of ww1. Serbia was on their way.... Serbian army, raised from the deads after passing through Albania, pushed them back from Thesalonici front. And it almost was the end of the war... There are recorded testemonies of veterans from ww1. They say, crossing Albanian mountains during winter and with no food was the greatest sacrifice of all the war. The building was made and named in dedication to that sacrifice.

Isn’t SerbIAN capital correct?

As someone born in Belgrade, not living tho for the last 20 years i always get nostalgic when i see videos about Belgrade. Unfortunately the city hasn't been taken well care of, it is poorly maintained and pretty much ran down. The buildings, pavements, curbs, underground passages seems so dilapidated. The corrupt government officials from Serbian progressive party have turned Belgrade into their own private city and one big chaotic place which lost its charm that it had once upon a time; such a pity.
NO SURRENDER sign over Kosovo map

Interesting thing about your videos Charles : when in Republika Srpska (Bosnia) you referring to people there like Serbians, but for people here in Belgrade like Srbians. What is purpose of this?
Huh? Ne razumem, gospodine.
@@ilovesrbija OK. Do we agree that people who live in Serbia are Serbians. Then, people who live in Republika Srpska of ortodox christian religion are Serbs.Right? Sure, but they live in country called Bosnia and Hercegovina so they cannot be called Serbians(people from Serbia).Get it?
@@imelusb1528 so why do the croats in Bosnia refer to themselves as Hrvati?
@@imelusb1528 First of all, your English is awfull, and second of all, there is no such thing as Serbians, we are all Serbs. It doesn't matter whether a person is from Subotica or a small village in Hercegovina or Montenegro. We are all SERBS. We all have a SINGLE SERB identity.
@@markojovanovic1750 Wikipedia: Serbians(Serbian: Srbijanci) is a national demonym for citizens of Serbia, regardless of ethnicity, majority of whom are ethnic Serbs. In Serbian, however, Srbijanci is used for ethnic Serbs from Serbia or in narrower sense, Serbs from central Serbia (Serbia proper). The term thus EXCLUDES ethnic Serbs in neighboring countries such as Bosnia and Hercegovina, Croatia,Montenegro and North Macedonia, for which the term Srbin (pl.Srbi) is used. In English, the two are commonly used interchangeably with the term ''Serbians'' sometimes erroneously applied to ethnic Serbs outside Serbia ( such as ''Bosnian Serbians'' for Bosnian Serbs. Likewise, the term ''Serbs''has been erroneously applied to all citizens of Serbia regardless of their ethnicity. I hope also Charles reads this.
Why do you pronounce "museum" so weird?
Eso esta muy bien montado por parte de unos cuantos, les vamal negocio y necesita publicidad.
Dude, it is Serbian capital as an adjective, not Serb capital, Serbian as an adjective with a noun, Serb is like a nationality, like Srbin in Serbian, srpski ili srpska ili srpsko as Serbian in Serbian. You can say that someone is Serb or Serbian as a nationality, Srbin ili Srpkinja, it is both grammatic correctly, but as an adjective is always Serbian , like Russian or German and etc..
So unusual to see my city centre like this in a video with English commentary, nice
