Another great video. I don’t have any connection to the area, but I know many of the buildings that still stand today, and the rail history is also interesting- considering the metro’s current expansion and location of some sections along the old Rosehill & Carlingford line. Years ago (early 90s) I was involved in ripping up railway lines going into Darling Harbour, before they put the trams in. Talking to others on the crew inspired me to looked for old rail alignments at Sandown, St Mary’s/Ropes X-ing, and Narellan/Camden. Some have been lost forever, but revival of others (like abattoirs to Olympic park) as part of the passenger system has been good to see. It’s interesting to see the dramatic changes with my own eyes in just the last 40 years. Your videos put all the pieces in place going back more than 150 years, and are done in a very factual and logical manner. My comments apply not just in the Granville region, but all the areas you have covered. I really enjoy these. Keep it up 👍

Thanks for your comment. Its remarks like yours that keeps us going throughout periods when few are watching our videos. I feel I ought to tell you that it took four weeks to make, which is very much the average time. There have been a few occasions when research points to the suburb having a story within itself, that sits on its own. This is particularly true of suburbs with an in industrial past. The creator is the female voice on the recording. I am the male voice, who replies to comments and helps to edit the final script. We are involved with local History Society, and recently made the front page of a local newspaper, at the reopening of Lydham Hall.I’m English, from a south east midland county, and have been here since 1974, and am a citizen. I’m only telling you this for I have had one criticism of my accent, but it is what it is. The Creator coaches me in Australian pronunciation.

Thank you for this excellent video. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I grew up in South Granville and many of these places were part of my childhood. The area was very hard working and industrious.

Thank you for the compliment. That you say,” I grew up in South Granville and many of these places were part of my childhood,” indicates to us that you no longer liver there. You have much in common with many of our viewers in this respect. It is one of the factors which presents a constant challenge, researching census figures, present little information to account for what attracts viewers. One suburb, now with a population of one thousand has many more viewers than that figure would suggest. That a previous government bought out their properties and I suspect adequately compensated at least some of them may be the answer. I doubt that you can answer as to why the best viewed video of ours is at present is Granville. Curiously we have had a spike in viewers, though in truth, it has always surprised us. Sadly no one has revealed as to why this recent interest. Should you, still have contacts within the suburb, perhaps you could give us an explanation. As an afterthought, we are very much aware that four out of five of our viewers are male. That many are particularly interested in areas that were industrial power houses but now are substantialy residential often accounts for viewers interest. Your comment may have been brief, but believe me it is informative.

Well put together video. I’m a former Greystanes resident & video maker. I thought MacArthur Park (now Garside Park) might get mention- was hoping as I was involved with Granville Soccer Association which itself has a long history (founded 1902). I was actually involved in removing an original Grandstand as it had unfortunately come into disrepair. Anyway I guess mine is more a sports story than the Industrial side that you went with here. I really enjoyed this video. I remember most of the sites you mentioned. Keep up the great work. Although I now live on the Gold Coast my hearts always in Sydney’s west

Thanks for your note, and particularly the way you have viewed the fact that Granville Soccer Club, did not get a mention. You are correct in recognising that the focus was on industry, but we must correct you regarding the foundation of the soccer club. A quick search in Trove searching for Granville football and between the dates 1900-01-01 and 1905-01-01, quickly unearths the beginnings of soccer in Granville in 1900, with application to join an association. It can be a little confusing, in that it is called football, played under B.A. rules, but latterly known as Association football. Curtesy of the local newspaper the “Fruitgrower,” but also in the Sydney newspapers, is a tale of initial rejection, but then acceptance. In short there might well be a book worth writing, or an epistle for a web sight. Did you take photographs prior to dismantling the stand or have you any other treasures in store. The height of success for the non-league team I supported in the U.K. was years ago they beat Luton town in the third round of the F.A. Cup. They who are now playing in the Premier English league. As to my team, defeated 6-0 in the next round by Plymouth Argyle. Ah soccer nostalgia, unforgettable.

A recommendation for those who return to a specific video searching for a a particular point of interest. Use “precise seeking” use your finger, stylus or cursor to drag the red line at the bottom left of your screen to the right. You should then see small but very clear pictures of what is being played on the UA-cam video. After finding the picture you want, play it, or use “pinch and zoom” on a touch screen to enlarge the image for more detail. This you do by spreading or contracting the distance between your thumb and index finger whilst touching the image on the screen.

Very fascinating history. I have relatives from Granville, Guildford and Fairfield, Canley Heights. Delwoods was where an uncle and aunt lived. Brought back some very old memories. Thanks so much for your work.

Thanks for your comment, it is very encouraging. Interesting how your relatives moved from one suburb to another. Did they all start in Granville and then move onto the others. We like to hear what connects one suburb to another as it helps us in deciding what suburb to do next. Sometimes it is a road that connects a suburb;the nearest beach; an industrial area, where people work, and sometimes the availability of better and cheaper housing. We value your comment. Happy New Year.

My mum's parents started out in West Wyalong, my pop worked for the railway and after many moves, ended up in Clyde St. Granville. He worked at Clyde Engineering.
Their children married, moved locally, to Auburn, Rosehill, Harris Park. Parramatta.
They worked at Rothmans, Arnotts my uncle apprenticed at Rosehill as a jockey, until he had a serious accident, and then spent all his working life at Arnotts.
My dads family were from Balmain, then moved to Short St Granville. Mum and Dad met at Arnotts, dad would have worked there after he came home from world war 2.
My nan lived at 92 Clyde St Granville till her death in 1978.
I wasn't interested in history in my younger years, now I love it.
Have you done a video on Rookwood cemetery. Lots of my family are buried there, with the oldest, to my knowledge, my great grandmother in 1913.

@@judithmargret5972 Thanks for your comments. According to UA-cam analytics only one in five of our viewers are women. The upside of this is that women view each video for a longer time. Curiously the creator of the videos is a woman. You have caused us to reflect on how, in the past, people did not move far from their place of employment. Likewise they did not go far in their leisure time. Just how this impacts on how many views our videos get is still to us a challenge. Manly, a place many will be aware of, has proved somewhat disappointing, and can only be accounted for in that the younger generation who now live there, have parents that didn’t. That is according to the most recent census. Another statistic, provided by UA-cam, is that the vast majority of our viewers are over forty five. As for doing a video on Rookwood Cemetery, we are sorry to inform you that we shan’t be doing one. Neither do we plan to do anything on the City of Sydney. Our attempt at promoting history, in the 19th century in the suburbs we are most familiar with, have been disappointing. The big factor is nostalgia, something which your comments point to very clearly. We want to encourage people to think of creating something about the suburbs they have memories of. A short story, play, film, song or poem perhaps? It hasn’t happened as yet, as far as we know, but we shall continue to provide, the names of some of the people who were part of the history, the places of employment, worship, entertainment, housing, that in some way provide the scenic background for a comparatively recent past. Thanks for providing us with such detailed information, it is much appreciated, and we would hope our readers of the comments will get something from them.
