How to talk to atc and what airline pilots say to air traffic control on ground. Depending on the size of the airport there are different frequencies in use whilst operating on the ground. When the crew arrives in the airplane, the pilot flying performs the preliminary cockpit inspection and listens out the current weather via the ATIS frequency. Automatic terminal information service, or ATIS, is a continuous broadcast of recorded aeronautical information in terminal areas, airports and their surroundings. ATIS broadcasts contain essential information, such as current weather information, active runways, available approaches, and sometimes other information required by the pilots, such as important NOTAMs. Notams. The recording is updated in fixed intervals or when there is a significant change in the information, for example a change in runway.
We contact the first frequency, which usually is Clearance delivery or Ground in order to ask which departure we can expect for our flight. Or, we ask for the departure clearance immediately when able. If there is no clearance delivery frequency displayed on the chart, we will call the Ground frequency. At less busy fields, the clearance delivery is often staffed by the same controller working on the Ground frequency. At some airports clearances will be read over the ground control frequency when it's not busy.
Sometimes there is another frequency like RAMP in Rome which we have to call whenever we are fully ready to depart. The idea behind using a dedicated frequency for this is that it avoids tying up the ground control frequency used for authorizing ground movement on taxiways and such with long clearances and readbacks.

Great video! Most people don’t realize how many people we have to talk to before we even take off. Sometimes there are up to 10 frequencies we need to talk to. Hope you are having a festive holiday season!

A collegue of mine used to get the attention of Cockpit (from ground) by putting his fingers in his mouth and making a loud whistle. Think how loud that whistle was. Sometimes ground staff "knock" on the nose fuselage (in a point near the intake of the Ground Power Cable) in order to ge the attention of the Cockpit... It is like knocking to a door... This is what you call "new Technologies"... :-)))

Thank you very much, there is always something new to learn from you. Love your and Joe's content, very well done!
Listening to the communication inside the plane, I noticed even on a short national flight they change frequency almost 20 times, just because every sector should be relatively small to avoid overload with increasing numbers of flight.
Is there an airspace to frequency allocation table in order to monitor or prepare the handover on the radio to preset the next frequency or is it always completely dynamic? I know that during the night the DFS (Deutsche Flugsicherung) combines sectors because of less traffic and less personell on the ground.
Any clue where to find such a frequency table?

It has a sympathetic effect on me when you pause for a moment and think about whether you have said the right thing and correct yourself if necessary and amuse yourself in the process.
I had to watch the video twice to understand everything you said. It would help to show some text or graphics before or during the explanation. Good was the example of NOTAM, also the list at the end - maybe it should also be shown at the beginning, or added in between with every step
Thanks for the video and the explanations!

Thank you for your explanation of all the things that pilots have to do. I feel quite worn out and we haven’t even left the ground yet! I think that getting away from the airport and flying would be the enjoyable part of the job away from all the annoying people on the ground! Oh, I forgot, at some time you have to land and the hassles start again! I have been watching your videos for a long time and enjoy them very much, never commented though. Thanks again, merry Christmas.

I was flying to Mexico City one time and checking the weather, the Metar included the abbreviation “FU”! I wondered for a while what this was as I had never encountered it before. Turns out it means “smoke”. In Mexico City, many people cook outside on open stoves, this producing large amounts of smoke released into the atmosphere from cooking. This phenomenon is very prevalent over parts of Central Mexico apparently. Very cool! Nice video Michelle

Well pushback was used and alowed in the past. Now it is not, mainly for the safety reasons and then efficiency and fuel prices.
And lower mounted engines are happy to have a longer lifespan too. :)

    What does Juliette mean

    • @tracyfajette2122
      @tracyfajette2122 5 років тому

Pilots use a phonetic alphabet to describe the letters spoken in aviation. Juliette is the word used for the letter J. Every letter has a phonetic word attached to it..... for example B is Bravo, D is Delta. This alphabet is used world wide so letter that sound similar don’t get confused. Think of how similar B and Z sound. You would not want to be cleared to taxiway B and mistake it for D or Z. Go to Google and search “phonetic alphabet” to get a list.

There isn't anything better for future male pilot, than to have female instructor. Cannot define why I think that, but something is "telling" me that.
More right rudder, more right rudder! 😅

Too many frequencies. I like a nice class G CTAF airport, one frequency for everything and no ATC.

good luck with getting, for exaplme, heathrow traffic to not collide without ATC. They aren't so scary once you get used to them, except in JKF, JFK is seemingly always scary
