      @@danielowentech You''re doing God's work with these comparisons. Seeing everything, I'm holding strong until the 6090. Initially, I was thinking of bulding a desktop system back in 2022. However, seeing the prices(especially here in EU) I just searched for the best deal on a high performance laptop as for my line of work it's already more than enough performance. I still wanted it to run some Unreal Engine and rendering as a beginner hobby and the 3080ti laptop model does all that. I will probably do the same when the 5000 series will come out and buy a 5090 laptop. I feel like by the time the 6090 comes out, I will definetly get the performance boost I am expecting from a high end desktop system and probably ride that until the ground. Unless who knows what kind of local AI model may emerge and it will make sense to actually upgrade your home system.

      For sure. Nvidia has those yields building up but they don't want to give us too good of a producy quickly because they want to keep selling $2k 4090s. Maybe we will see the 80ti and 90ti at the same time.
      Have you seen how the 4070 ti super was not as performant as ppl thought going from 192bit to 256bit? This is due to the large cache of course and what I would say is a 4080 ti 16gb would still be able to achieve +20% performance over the 4080 super because the bus width has far less of an impact on performance as with previous gens. I wouldn't be surprised with a 4080ti still has 16gb to enable that glorious planned obsolescence so Nvidia can sell those same people a 5080 with more VRAM.

    If memory serves you are a maths teacher. When calculating the performance increases between models I've always taken the concomitant price increases to be non-linear - that is, the higher the model the higher the uplift. You might find it interesting to fit curves over each range and see how those curves change over different GPU series.

    I would love to see a benchmark comparison on the higher end GPUs on a widescreen (21x9 or more) monitor - I have to believe that the FPS stats would be different and that widescreens require more resources! Thanks for the really straight forward and down to earth information!

    • @methoxeta
      @methoxeta 3 місяці тому

      it depends on the resolution. 3440x1440 requires way less work than 3840x2160, but more than 2560x1440. 4k / 5k widescreens even more taxing than 4k 2160. 4k is like 4x 1080p in terms of pixels, 4x the work, you'll often see 1/4th the fps in 4k compared to 1080p for a given GPU / graphics settings setup. other factors like memory, vram, and cpu limits will shift that around, but roughly it tends to work out that way in my experience.

    Been waiting to upgrade for a few years now, was originally looking at the 4080 but heard rumours of the 4080 S coming, decided to wait. I'm glad I did, I understand that's it's practically the exact same product but I managed to buy an MSI RTX 4080 S Gaming X Trio for £959 yesterday on Amazon. (it's now £1079) I'm actually really happy. I said I would get the 4080 if it was ever under £1000 and well, that's exactly what I just got! My MSI RTX 2080 Duke was an absolute champion though, beastly card that I got for £550, used on eBay only 6 months after launch. "Part" of the blame does go to Nvidia, a bit less to AMD. There's greed there yeah. But frankly a huge part of the pricing is based on inflation. We have 1970's level inflation... for several years. It really changes things. And it _will_ turn you into an old person who says "Back in my day, a bigmac cost $2". But really it's more to do with the federal reserve, and washington fiscal policy, than McDonalds.
      Nvidia's pricing/performance stack is pretty sketchy though, yeah.

    • @F1neW1ne
      @F1neW1ne 3 місяці тому

      @@kathrynck Well... since the uplift we see on the 4080 versus the 3080 would make 4080 the 3080 successor, you can take the 3080 launch price and inflate it to today. RTX3080 MSRP was $699 in September 2020 (12GB Version was &799). Using inflation calculators to project that to 2024 (~17%) and add a little just because reasons... and the price of the 4080 actually belongs at $850 MSRP today. At most $900. This is not a case of "back in my day" LOL. Rip off city pure and simple economics. Then again, the regular 4080 was already a nearly maxed out card, there's not that much more they could squeeze out of it. The "real" benefit is the price cut... at least on paper. It's not actually 200$ less everywhere, in fact right now it's still as expensive as the regulars, or more. At the moment, the best thing to do is to do the good ol' waiting game.

What this means is a theoretical cut sown ad102 4080ti with only 256bit(16gb) could still acheive a +15-20% over the 4080super. Do not put it past nvidia to do this to enable that juicy planned obsolescence on a flagship gpu. Exactly. Maybe a 80ti and 90ti will come out at the same time. Something to understand about a potential 4080ti is that ADA architecture(massive cache) is designed to get maximum performance with less vram bandwidth. Nvidia could easily release a cut down ad102 chip and only use 256bit bus for 16gb and still get a +20% over the 4080 super. I wouldn't put it past Nvidia to do this to enable that juicy planned obsolescence of a low vram flagship lol they would never lmao

    NVIDIA tricked us into thinking the 4080 Super would actually be a new product.
    It practically isn't.
    And the worst part is: Normal 4080's are basically priced the same on the markets right now, if not even cheaper.
    So the basic advice is: Buy whichever is cheaper right now, there is basically no difference.

Great card, even if it is super expensive. (Coming from the original 3080 that I got lucky enough to get at actual msrp right when it released). Looks like Nvidia knew the limitation here lies elsewhere (cache?) other than the number of cores so they didn't feel the need to enable the full GPU die. However, for marketing reasons, they did for the "super" version. Also we have reputable reports already stating that the 4080 Super FE uses a less advanced PCB compared to the original 4080 FE, with the Super variant featuring less power phases and cheaper components (in order to keep costs low and profits high despite the price cut), that would mean less OC margin / reliability. All things considered, if you happen to find a 70-100 bucks cheaper 4080 maybe it's a better pick than a 4080 Super.

      The 4070 Ti Super and 4080 Super look to be cache bottlenecked, yeah.
      Also, both cards have no change to TDP (even though the 4070 Ti super even has 4 more gb of vram to power as well).
      So it makes sense that the OC potential could be somewhat greater.
      BUT... the RTX 4000 series, and RX 7900 series (as well as the 13k/14k and 7000X cpu's), are all bios-set to attempt a very aggressive overclock, all the time, out of the box. I undervolted a 7900X and 4090, and thermal-maxed both to 80C for paste longevity. And I'm still seeing 95% or more of their performance on both. The current-gen silicone is being pushed pretty hard into the redline on default settings. Harder than in the past anyway.

    • @DavidAlfredoGuisado

      yep, today I tested a highly overclocked Asus TUF 4080 Super (curve set to 3105 MHz at 1075mV and +1500 VRAM) and got GPU Score of 31212 in TimeSpy, then I set a Suprim-X 4080 "original" to a lazy +165 core and +1300 VRAM and got a tad better result of 31492, even if it's within margin of error... where's the hardware advantage of the 4080 Super? is it the better PCB keeping clocks higher and more consistently on the original 4080?@@kathrynck

    • @Frozoken
      @Frozoken 3 місяці тому

      @kathrynck 4070ti super sure, 4080 super i doubt it. Remember the 4090 has 60% more cores but only 12% more cache altho I think that card is cache limited too lol.

    • @kathrynck
      @kathrynck 3 місяці тому +1

      @@Frozoken That's a good point. Actually I was thinking about what I posted and second guessing myself after the fact.
      80super has 5.26% more cuda, tmu's, and rt cores... while the things which didn't change are cache, vram, vram bandwidth, and power.
      Meanwhile the 4090 (arguably 28-45% greater perfomance) has 60% more cuda, tmu's and rt cores. 50% more vram, 40% more ram bandwidth, and 60% more power. But only 12% more L2 cache. So yeah, if there was a 'hard' chokepoint on the L2, that _should_ really be crippling the 4090, and it's not.
      It could be that the 4090 is scaling with 2 factors, like the 12% L2 and a couple 60% items, and averaging out to +36% perf. But the stat which most obviously matches is vram bandwidth.
      I dunno. L2 could be holding all the cards back "some". but it could be vram & ram bandwidth holding the 80Sup back. Or power.
      I don't think it's power though. My 4090 "likes" an undervolt, and gained performance from undervolting (less thermal throttle). I gained about 5% bench over stock (TUF OC) with a fairly robust undervolt (it could pull up to 600w peak out of the box). Though I lost the gain and ended up slightly negative by thermal capping to 80C for "piece of mind" & "long term finances" hehe.
      A lot of these 4080 cards (non FE) have a 4090 cooler on them (a massive brick). So I don't think there's any heat dissipation limit either.
      The choke point has to be in the Vram amount, Vram bandwidth, or the L2 cache (or some combination thereof).
      It may seem like a lot of fuss over a few percent, but if you're expecting 5.26% uplift, and you get like 1.5% uplift (consistently, across different cards, makers, and test benches)... that's less than 1/3 of the expectation, and points to a major bottleneck, which may be limiting the regular 4080's (or the whole 4000 lineup) much more than a few percent. A small discrepancy which points to a possible much larger issue.
      I suppose there could be something dumb in drivers too (beyond MSI's problem I mean).
