- Raytheon's RIM-7 SEASPARROW is a direct development of the AIM-7E Sparrow air-to-air missile.
The SEASPARROW missile system is a highly effective surface-to-air missile that is primarily used by naval forces for defense against hostile aircraft and missiles. The missile features a cylindrical body with four mid-body wings and four tail fins, measuring 12 feet (3.7 m) in length and 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter.
The missile weighs 510lb (230kg). It is powered by a Hercules MK-58 solid-propellant rocket motor that enables it to reach an impressive maximum speed of 2,645 mph (4,256 km/h).
The missile is equipped with a semi-active radar homing guidance system, which allows it to track and engage targets accurately. The SEASPARROW missile has an operational range of 10 nautical miles (19 kilometers), making it an essential component of naval defense systems worldwide.
These missiles will be launched from an old Soviet landbased system in Ukraine. Buk is a tracked, short-range air defense system. It employs semi-active radar technology that is now considered obsolete. In terms of homing technology, it is similar to the Sparrow. This similarity let the Ukrainian engineers to figure out how to launch SEASPARROW from Buk command centers, using the system's 9E420 radar to guide them to their targets.

The Sea Sparrows are being sent as basically a direct NATO replacement for the BUK missiles that Ukraine is running out of and has no way to replenish, as the BUK is a Soviet/Russian system. The Sea Sparrow missile was chosen specifically because it uses a semi-active radar guidance, which was shown in the video. Basically, whatever launches the Sea Sparrow has to guide it to the target. The BUK missiles work the exact same way...semi-active radar guidance.
Ukraine was running out of BUK missiles with no way to replace them, so the Sea Sparrow was successfully integrated into the BUK launcher and the BUK's radar and will now act as a direct NATO replacement for the BUK missiles. We don't have any BUK missiles to send to Ukraine. We have lots of Sea Sparrows in inventory that we were never going to use because the Sea Sparrow has been replaced in US Navy service by the ESSM...the "Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile", which shares more in common with the AIM-120 AMRAAM than the older Sea Sparrows. The ESSMs do not have the four big mid-body fins that the original Sea Sparrow has.
The adaptions required to accept illumination from the BUK radar is what I am curious about. Is the Sparrow being modified, or the BUK radar or both?
@@williamzk9083 I truly have no idea, and we may never know. If we ever do find out, it won't be until this war is over and books/articles are written about all of the in-depth, behind-the-scenes ways that we helped the Ukrainians win the war.
Or maybe Joe Biden's leaky White House/DOD will tell us exactly how they are modifying the Sea Sparrows to work on BUK systems with another leak of classified documents tomorrow. Who knows?
The latest version of the BUK (the M3) model uses active radar homing and command guidance. (Allowing a fire and forget capability as well as a manual correction in mid-flight). Ukraine has no access to these, as they have the earlier semi-active variant. After a software update in the control radar, the Russian versions of the BUK, TOR, and Pantsir systems have success in intercepting HARM missiles, HIMARS rockets, JDAMs, drones, etc.
@@tigerhawk667 We have heard these amazing claims before regarding Russian SAMS and they've turned out to be irresponsible sales brochure exaggerations to the point of being lies. BUK M3 and S350 does indeed have active radar homing and far more of a chance of intercepting something like a GMLRS missile. I doubt Pantsir will ever be effective given its CLOS system nor TOR, they simply lack the precision. I think it will be extremely expensive to hit a HIMARS/GMLRS salvo and I think HARM will be only vulnerable if fired from long range in a ballistic trajectory rather than its Mach 2.9 direct mode.
I'd like to point out that many of the shots of missiles being fired in this video were RIM 162 Evolved Sea Sparrow missiles, which are far more capable and have over twice the range of the older RIM-7 Sea Sparrow. Based on what I've read the Ukrainians will not be getting the newer RIM 162 Evolved Sea Sparrow.

You have to hand it to the Ukrainians for their innovative ways of thinking out of the box. A very clever people indeed! Glory to Ukraine!😊😊
🤯(Glad they're not our enemy) ✌️🇺🇦🤝🇺🇸👍
No, I really don't, this is just stolen US tech anyway, they're a vassal state to israel and deserve to lose for the sake of the lives of innocent Russians Ukrainians
@@kathleenmann7311 They are our enemy though LOL
True. True enough.
But,....
One should also recognize that NATO engineering, particularly in the area of systems integration.
This is what makes it possible to integrate NATO weapons with what is essentially Russian equipment in Ukraine.

Ukraine is our enemy?
Please enlighten us as to exactly how you draw that conclusion?

Keep up the good work! Glory to Ukraine.
No good work in sight, ukraine and NATO are scum, and are inevitably losing. Seethe more when they're done for, larper.
The video is very well explained and illustrated, but I gave up to try to follow the presented measures in body parts instead of metric system.
Maybe adding both, at least in the images, will help a wider audience to follow the narrative.
Thank you
Thank you for your feedback and suggestion! We understand that using different units of measurement can be confusing, and we will definitely take this into consideration for future videos. Ukraine is a military development company's wet dream for testing out its weapons and new inventions and who would have thought something so small like the drone sitting beside me is the grim reaper of the battlefield.
The SA-11 Gadfly is getting long-in-the-tooth and an SA-11 variant was used to shoot down MH17 in 2014.
Wonder if a sea sparrow can be mounted to a sea drone??
Hi there! Interesting question! It's possible to mount a sea sparrow to a sea drone, but it would depend on the size and weight of the drone, as well as the specifications of the sea sparrow missile system. It's important to note that the use of missile systems on unmanned vehicles is regulated by international laws and regulations, so there may be legal considerations as well. Thanks for watching our video and for your question!
All the Kingsmen could not put HumptyDumpty together again...
What was shipped to Ukraine, was the NASAM ground launch system. NASAM stands for National Advance SAM, though its original name was Norwegian Advance SAM. Originally the NASAM was designed as a ground launched AIM-120 AMRAAM system, and is deployed around the US Capital, as a last ditch Ant-Air system. A major update was made to use the Evolved Sea Sparrow missile. Because the Sparrow is no longer in use for fighter aircraft, the was no weight limitation for the Evolved Sea Sparrow was developed. with a larger diameter solid fuel rocket engine, and equipped with the of AMRAAM active radar homing system, but uses a much larger radar array then the AIM-120
The Sea Sparrows going to Ukraine have nothing to do with the NASAMs systems that they have. As bad as these Interesting Engineering videos usually are, what they said in this video is correct. We are NOT sending ESSMs. These are just the standard, older Sea Sparrows, and they are being sent specifically to be used on Ukraine's BUK launchers.
Ukraine has no way to replenish the missiles for their BUK systems, obviously, because those were all made in Russia. But just like the BUK missile, the Sea Sparrow has semi-active radar guidance, and that is precisely why the Sea Sparrow was chosen. The US and Ukraine were able to successfully integrate the semi-active Sea Sparrow missiles into the BUK launchers and the BUK's radar. The Sea Sparrows are basically just a direct NATO replacement for the BUK missiles that Ukraine is running out of and has no way to replenish.
They should redesign the missile with forward fins for greater agility.
Ukraine: Seasparrows
Russian : Well yes I do
If Ukraine falls to the invading Orcs, then Taiwan will also fall to invading Orcs of another kind and WW3 could begin. It's simple as that. This is a fork in the road in history. There are no second chances to get this right.
I second that and wonder why my fellow Republicans can't see why we should keep helping Ukraine for the very reason you stated. If the Republicans don't stop this isolationists talk another Demoncrat will go back into The Whitehouse!

Yes, engineering is all about creativity and making new products / repurposing existing ones for a good purpose. Such as fighting invaders from a truly evil country.
From what I understand and saw in simulators . The aim7 kinda sucks. It's easily defeated and has a short zone where it can really keep up with a moving maneuvering target. Why use this?
I mean the aim 120 seems like. Better missle to develop and let this thing rot
Many of your images and animations depict different systems. Earns you a do-not-recommend rating.
War force a country to innovate. Like how Israel came out their own anti ship missile like Gabriel missile...

They're losing LOL
10 kilometres
So basically obsolete
*19km
Isn't it more destructive if the warhead is located somewhere in the front of the missile..?
The warhead is triggered by the proximity sensors along the sides of the fuselage and the orientation of the missile when it intercepts the target does not matter. The missile does not chase and dive head-first into the target as many people imagine, it just tries to figure out where the target will be and flies there.
It’s 2023, why is anyone still perpetuating antiquated Imperial units like pounds and miles per hour? Get your act together.
This is an extremely ignorant comment. The US which developed said missile uses imperial units for their technological development. Don't pretend like you know more than them, because you most certainly don't.
I can understand European frustration but you're just going to have to learn to live with it

Great move by US! This will decimate Russian aircraft.
No it won't. Russia will win with the help of China and even Iran, mark my words.
Sparrow's suck. Only like a 9% kill rate. Might as well give them away
i doubt . and in Ukraine it will be used against russian tracktors so it will be 200% kill rate
Well they have been around for a long time, since the late 70ties as i recall.
But how many times have they been fired in anger ? it cant be that many
That depends on what version Ukraine is getting
The first aim7 from the 70s cant be compared to the newer upgraded version that Tainwan uses from the 90s
@@pliashmuldba MANY were fired in Vietnam. I'm sure they got slightly better in later versions, but Vietnam is where they got their 9% kill rate. Of course, that was against fighters. They'd probably do better against missiles on predictable paths.
Later versions of Sparrow had many kills during Desert Storm.
Russia make Ukrainian strength, they strengthen their because they have to give the power Ukraine how to make fight for them. That Russia is dark angel.
Waste of money and resources.
