    I know factory Rem's are sloppy, but that back and forth play in the bolt is suppose to be there. Standard practice is to have 0.005-0.010" bolt nose clearance between the bolt nose and the back of the barrel when installing a new barrel. I sometimes run mine a little tighter, but that clearance is so that if a foreign object gets in there, there is still room to get the bolt closed. On my BR rifles, I will run it down to the 0.005" range, but those are guns that don't really get "dirty" like a tactical style rifle might shooting off the ground. Also cutting more than needed off the bolt lugs can cause extraction issues due to loss in cam contact. Therefore you fit the barrel to the receiver/bolt combo, not the bolt to the barrel. Only way to realistically fix the forward movement of the bolt is with a new bolt handle re-welded and timed, or a new PTG bolt. Not trying to bash you, just trying to give some friendly advice.

    Not knocking rem 700s but my howa 1500 308. was rebarreled by Douglas and they told me the reciever was square and the action bolt face and lugs did not need any machining.I was told by Douglas they hardly ever have to do to howa what has to be done with every 700 they rebarrel.They also said rem 700s cant get the scope mount holes centered on the action.But hats off to you for the work you do.

    Good video. I have a 700P LTR in 308. Timney trigger with tactical bolt knob. I torque the screws to 45 in lbs. it shoots 1 hole at 100 yards using Hornady Match 178gr BTHP. Keeping as is no need to touch, would like to add bottom metal some day.

    I thread mine and it is now shooting horribly. I believe the harmonics are off. Before I threaded the barrel it was 1/2-3/4 group. What can I do to get back what I had. My smith just remove the brake and add a thread protector. Did not help. Thanks

    Is there anyway you could do your work to a Remington 783, Springfield 30-06? Your fluted knob and barrel are solid. What are your thoughts on the Magpul 700 hunter. Do you think a 783 would fit the long action stock?

    jcs I'm thinking of getting a 308win to shoot out to 1,500yd but the gun has a 20"barrel and I'm thinking of using it for competition shooting what you think about it looking for your advice

    • @Andrew-cm5tc
      @Andrew-cm5tc 5 років тому +1

      I'm by no means a self proclaimed expert. I'm just an average firearms enthusiast but that's too far for a 308. The M24 only has an official range of 800 meters but the longest record sniper kill in combat for a 308 is 1312 yards so you'd be trying to shoot another 200 yards more or less. If you want to shoot out to 1500 then you'll probably need something more like 338 lapua or 50 BMG.The skill to be able to shoot that far will probably take a long time to develop and the equipment and ammo is expensive too. If you are just starting then 308 is fine out to 600 yards and the ammo is affordable. The reason I say that is because at the big gun club near where I used to live, the longest range there is 600 yards and people shoot 308 there.

      MIne ended up being shit ,,, the cost of having the barrel action accurized vs just having it blue printed with a new barrel was $400 more ... Not worth the money to have these "newer" remys shoot ( thye went to shit after the company sold ) ... Just find a old m700 and a pawnshop and have a smith rebarrel it and you do the rest ,, saves teh gamble on a shelf rifle and paying $$$$ to have it accurized .. PS tye 5r milspecs do shoot good .
